WARNING RELIGIOUS CONTEXT. sooooo if you just wanto criticise etc. pls go somewhere else. thanks. (:
hi, just wanted to know if there are any verses in the bible that talks on getting stronger physically or about weight lifting at all or stuff like that. that’d be pretty cool. (:
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” First Corinthians.
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like an eagle; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:28-31
“The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs…and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58:11
“This is what the Lord says,: ‘Your wound is incurable, your injury is beyond healing. There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy for your sore, no healing for you. All your allies have forgotten you; they care nothing for you. … But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds…’” Jeremiah 30:12-14, 17
“But we…rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 3:5
my personal favorite:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

Being an atheist, I don’t know, but I do know that historically Christians thought that the Olympics were immoral partly because they were competitive and partly because they done in the nude by greased up guys.
Long-standing attempts to remove gym class from public schools and shot down a variety of athletic programs still comes from some Christian groups as well as their secular cousins, the Socialists. Outlawing competitive sports is supposed to make us all better people. My take: sports are where people learn how to be part of a team and work together for a goal. A lack of sports and related activities is more likely to give people weird ideas about how competition can get out of hand. Sanctifying being a bad loser just isn’t the way…

? what vitriol?
The original games were abolished in 393 AD by Theodosius I because of their pagan content. His successor had the main stadium for these demolished. More recent thinking is pretty much along these lines:
As for the Marxist view, here some polemic for you that is pretty much a mish-mash of everything you’ll read : MARXISM AND SPORT
I do think that both views conflate competition = playing by the rules but looking out for yourself with simple, naked aggression which sure does simplify criticism. :o)
“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.”
Paul drew an illustration from the Isthmian games which got their name from the isthmus on which Corinth stood.
Every second or third year, huge crowds gathered to watch the athletic contests. The winner and his family were honored, and when he returned to his native city, a breach was made in the city walls to allow him to enter, indicating that with such a man they had no need of walls for defense.
In the Greek games only one won the prize. In the Christian race the prize is open to all. The emphasis is on the disciplined, purposeful, hard-running winner. The Christian should run as the winner runs.
Paul also stated,
I Timothy 4:8
“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”
Paul does not say that physical exercise is unprofitable. He said it is of some profit or value. But spiritual exercise (“godliness”) brings value or profit to all things. Godliness brings “promise” of blessings in this life and in the next life too. The godly person has the best of both worlds.

Actually it is Saturday if you are refering to Judeism. Christianity does not talk about being stoned.
When the Jews were in the desert, didn’t they come across a man gathering firewood and judge that he should be put to death for ignoring the Sabbath? Did this man have a family he was trying to keep warm? I wonder if he whimpered as the first stone from the angry mob struck his head.
Please don’t write things off as “not Christianity”, Jesus doesn’t say you can jettison the old testament at any point (and I don’t want to hear your “interpretation”), but he did reinforce it several times.

Right. We’ve been trying to find someone to cast the first stone.

You’re out of your league, buddy. Stick to dissertations about Buddhism or architecture or Sri Lankan pottery. You simply do not know what you’re talking about. You continually embarrass yourself on this type subject.
You mentioned Sunday or you get stoned. Now you are quoting Sabbath and the Old Testament. Man you really need to read the Bible before you comment on it. The Sabbath by Jewish traditions started sun down on Friday night and ended at sun down on Saturday. If you are going to make a point make sure you get it right.
On your note about the interpretation of the Bible, if you are going to interpret the Bible incorrectly then I get to interpret the Bible correctly.
