I was dead serious. I think it’ll take me four months hard training to get to five bodyweight pull-ups. Sad, I know. Hel understands. Doc
Glad you intervened there, Doc. They were about to have us doing one arm pullups through the jungle while holding Jane in the other arm.

And what, I ask, is wrong with that?
Put it on the list!
As a show of good faith I’ll do it holding Mowgli. ![]()
Cappy
I’d pay good money to see that contest.

I would pay good money to see hel explain to his wife why he was holding another woman…This sounds like the toughest part of the exercise.

That is what would make the whole contest worth paying money to see!
I hope the other threads are the best. The best to you and the family. I’m rockin’ on and I’m sorry I didn’t hear from you. You don’t need my baggage. Seee ya the funny’s!!!
To be honest, I’ve been worried sick about possibly having prostate cancer and didnt work out for a week. Getting the news my PSA was way down has literally given me new life. My hormones still suck but I’ll cope with what my body gives me. So back to the important things:
Assisted pull-ups
10 with 120lb assist
5 with 100
5 with 80
5 with 60
5 with 40
and the moment of truth…
3 with bodyweight (and the Russian judge gave me a red light).
Lat pulldowns
5 sets up to 8x 180 (stack)
Cable rows
5 sets one armed rows to 6x180
Db curls
8 sets up to 8x 50
Now I have purpose and meaning in my life again! :))) Doc
Great news on the PSA results Doc! And what a pull-up routine! Its good you are back in the saddle with one less thing to worry about.
As an aside, at what age should a man get his PSA baseline? My Doc and I are in ‘discussions’ over that.

From what I've read, general consensus is about age 45, unless you have risk factors (like family history) in which case you would start earlier. Doc
First, that is great news and I’m very happy for you.
However…
The checks in the mail, I’ll rspect you in the morning, I won’t…, I don’t have time to dedicate to pullups.
BAM!
Lat routine from hell.
Never trust people with letters after their name:]

What??? You mean you would rather spend time doing 5 reps with 345 in the bench and throwing a shot put than dedicating yourself to doing 5 pullups?
Somebody’s got their priorities all screwed up. Doc
Today, I reached a new low in personal embarassment in the gym. After doing twenty minutes cardio and seven sets of machine benches, I went over to the assited lat machine. My lats and biceps are still too sore and today is push day, so I look at that machine and realize it is also a dip machine. OK, havent done a dip in 20 years, lets try some. Can’t do one. Not ONE bodyweight dip. Not even close. Holy shit.
After I wait until nobody is watching, I put the pin somewhere in the stack, just guessing like pin the tail on the donkey cause I have no fucking clue how much "assist" I will need.
All I will say is I did seven sets of dips, but even under waterboarding I would not tell you how much "assistance" I used. If I was sammurai I would have leaned on my sword today.
I at least took out my shame on DB presses, did like a hundred reps total with the biggest ones they had, sixties, and staggered home ready to puke.
I hope Cappy doesnt see this. Doc
Doc, You are a helluva guy for telling that story. I suspect a whole lot of us can relate too! (Mine has to do with a failed attempt to power snatch 90 lbs. Now THAT is embarassing!!)
I’ll bet you are doing 5 body weight dips in 2 weeks.

Doc, you know, there was a time I needed more assistance on a dip machine than I now weigh (178.6 this morning). I’m trying the dip belt and weight for the first time tonight. I can’t believe the change a few years have made.
One lift at a time Doc, one lift at a time.
Anyway, Cappy only comments critically if your form is bad ![]()
Doc:
Actually, this is awesome because now you have a new challenge! And think how exciting it will be when you start making lots of progress, huh?
Hey, I had to start somewhere too. I couldn’t do a single chin or dip. Not one. Very humbling. One thing I have discovered since: I need to be really, REALLY warmed up to dip well. Typically, I do 3 sets of pushups first, about 5-6 reps per set. I follow that with a set of 4-5 dips @ BW, then start adding weight in 5,10, or 15 lb. jumps, doing low reps just to get my groove. Then, and only then can I jump to working weight and have at it.
So on a typical dip day it might look like this:
Pushups: 5 x 3
dips: BW x 5
15 x 3
25 x 3
35 x 3
Working sets: 55 x 8 x 3
Chins were tougher. I was the Queen of low rep sets for a L-O-N-G time! Then I added negitives. That sucked canal water, but it helped. (Pre “assist” machines, so I had to recruit someone to boost my butt back up there for every damn rep.) Finally, when I could bang out 8 good reps on my own I said, “Screw it” and started adding weight. FWIW, I try to use a parallel grip whenever I can.
I still hate chins with a passion, but they’ve been good to my back.

I'm sure you had plenty of volunteers for this job. Good thing I have an "assist" machine. lol Doc
This is a pathetic story.
I went to workout, happy it was pull day. After cardio, went straight to the assisted pull-up machine. Did two warm-up sets, 10 with 100, 5 with 60, then went for straight bodyweight pullups.
Got 4, which is a "PR", but PULLED A MUSCLE on the fourth rep. Some obscure muscle seemingly below where the lats attach in the lower back, on the left.
This is ridiculous. This is unacceptible. It's probably only a "three day pull" or a week tops, but still unacceptible.
There are acceptible things one can be doing when one pulls a muscle:
1. Deadlifting over four plates.
2. Benching over three plates.
3. Clean and jerking anything.
4. Rescueing a woman stuck under a car.
5. Lifting the Atlas stones.
6. Cleaning up after a hurricane.
There are things that are just not acceptible causes of pulled muscles.
1. Hitting a nine iron to a big green.
2. Trimming your hedges.
3. Picking up your dropped keys.
4. Spanking your child.
5. Spanking your monkey.
6. Spanking your secretary.
Well, enough on spanking, you get the point.
Four pullups, laying on my ice bag. Sad. Doc
Greg Norman leading the British Open at age 53. This is inspiring, I dont care if you like or hate the guy. I used to like him but his choke in the Masters in 96 ended his career and my interest in him. But his return from retirement (and a 103 million divorce settlement) got me really fired up, so I had to lift. Back still achy but much better.
Cardio-20 min
Bench-6 sets of 10 (low weights today)
Assisted pullups
5 with 120
5 with 100
5 with 80
5 with 60
5 with bodyweight
Side laterals
6 sets, up to 10 x 35
ab machine
4 sets with whatever
Hel, thanks for inspiring me, but you got better things to do than worry about me and pullups. Doc
I would think of it as pulling a muscle doing a the 4th 260 lb pull down - which IS acceptable.
