Alisa's Training Log

After a lousy week (missed some workouts, ate badly) I’m back in business. I have a week and a bit before I go home for a while and have limited gym access, so I’m thinking I’ll have “fun” until I go home – weights every day, try some new things. When I come back I’d like to do something like 5/3/1 – the idea of doing higher volume at lower weights appeals to me, and I’ll probably need it after four weeks without weights. I’m planning on mostly running, though I’ll also be doing sprints and what bodyweight stuff I can (yay playgrounds! chins, pullups, dips, rows, monkey bars.)

Squats: 10@45, 10@95, 5@115, 5@135, 5x5@155
40 hanging leg raises
lat raises: 3x10@12.5
press (seated) 1x5@45, 1x5@65, 3x5@70
bent-over row: 5x5@95 (PR!)
preacher curls: 1x10@35, 3x10@45 (PR, I guess – though I never thought of curls as something you PR in)
and then I was a good girl and did birddogs and fire hydrants and looked really silly with my butt in the air just as a friend of mine walked by.
A friend does ballet – she thinks I’m masochistic for lifting heavy stuff and I think she’s masochistic for stretching. She showed me this stretching machine where you turn a crank and it forces your legs out at a wider and wider angle; it’s a torture device. I made it almost to 90 degrees. Point and giggle away.

Pics or it didn’t happen…

Pics of what?

Never mind.

Ah, maybe someday.
I do wind up making … interesting … faces from the pain.

I can imagine. Were I on such a machine, there would be many interesting sounds as well.

Why do I eat ice cream?

Because it is there.

God I’m stupid.

Just squats, followed by a horrible crying jag about how I’m in terrible shape and look awful and haven’t accomplished anything and nobody loves me. Kind of silly, really, but I do have bad squat form (even when I technically hit depth my back is hunching) and I’m going to have to relearn it all over again, and I’ll be weak as a kitten, and I did eat badly these past couple weeks and got a little squishy, which means I’m too self-conscious to see anyone or talk to anyone, except tomorrow is my birthday and I’m supposed to meet friends, and on the work front I’m fighting with the Quaternions from Hell and losing…

WAAAAHH!

I did PR (3x5@185) but it was on a box, and my knees were caving in like crazy.

If it’s any help or comfort I’ve had to relearn to squat at least 5 times in the last 4 years. It’s always a work in progress and form always needs perfecting.

Quaternions? You work in computer graphics?

Ahhh Quaternions - fun times!

nice PR! Backing off to improve your form is always the right thing to do because lifting should be a long term endeavor. It’ll all get better with time…

She could be studing to be a rocket scientist, we use they too…

Applied math, actually. And yes, it is good to hear. I thought it was just me.

Figuring orbital mechanics with NASA was my other guess… Unless AlisaV has something to do with nuclear missiles!

No, no nucular weapons for me.

Deadlifts: 1x5@135, 1x5@175, 1x5@225, 1x5@235, 1@245 (poop) 1x20@135 SLDL’s.
bench: 1x5@45, 1x5@65, 1x5@85, 3/4/5@95
40 hanging leg raises
3/3/3 pullups
bunch of bar-only squats for form (have to make a conscious effort to not curl up my lower back like a pillbug, but I can do it. Didn’t push my luck with adding weight; the more I add, the more my form goes to poo.) And barbell lunges, at 65 for now, which I’m finding I like.
leg press: 10@205, 10@295
iso-lateral row: 1x5@102, 3x5@122
lat raises: 3x10@12.5

as long as you’re willing to relearn. shame to the people who arent.

something that helped me was a robertson description: try to stick your ass out against a wall that isnt there. reach for it with your ass. keep your chest up and your back will be aligned the whole way down, however far that is. couple that with driving your knees out on the way up, you’ll be peachy!

id start with a broomstick/sissy bar at first, till u get used to the stretch.

congrats on the pr.

ps. u know you’ve made progress in the last few months, the men in tvix have noticed as well as the women.

keeping the elbows forward helps drive the chest up to!

All right! Four weeks. No gym. Delicious home-cooked food.

The upside?
I’ll run every day. Hopefully get back some endurance.
Thanks to my folks’ habits, I’ll have useful social pressure not to eat too much and to walk around more.

Today: 6 miles.

Do you have access to equipment outside the gym, or do bodyweight stuff, to get some muscle work in? Single leg squats, feet-elevated push ups, chinups come to mind.

Hm, could try that … playground fun. (Unf. can’t do a single leg squat yet.)

Try partial ROM single leg squats. Stand on a step and let one leg dangle. squat while using the railing for balance. Or something similar out on the playground. It’s time for some creative fun!
