deadlift: 1x5@135, 1x5@175, 1x5@225, 1x4@235, 1x5@245 (rep PR!)
bench: 1x5@45, 1x5@65, 1x5@65, 1x5@95, 1x2@100 (PR!)
pullups: 5/2/2/1, 3x5 negatives
dips: 20
squat: 1x5@45, 1x5@95, 1x5@115, 1x5@135, 1x5@155, 1x5@175, 3x5@180 (PR!)
Geepers, PRs left and right. Good going.
Tried the “Boy, You’re Gonna Carry That Weight” workout. Hurt my hands so bad. And no, I can’t do 60% of my deadlift 1rm; I don’t have that kind of grip strength. I’m conflicted as to whether I like this; on the one hand, getting better at carrying stuff would be a real-life plus, but on the other hand, it’ s a lot of pain for a workout that’s not super-taxing for the rest of my body.
3x circuit:
1 min each:
two-dumbbell carry @ 35’s
bear hug carry with 45-lb plate
suitcase carry @55
staggered farmer’s walk @ 30/45
sumo carry @ 80
overhead carry @ 30
ab rollouts
shot baskets (or rather missed baskets, since I haven’t done this since middle school gym class; and jammed my finger. Let that be a lesson to me to meddle in sports.)

Nice! I was having the same debate with myself today on the grip. I take the approach that I can wait on greater lifts until all the weak parts catch up. That workout looks like a lot of fun. One minute is a looong time to carry heavy stuff. Have a great evening!
Im laughing at the fact that you did that big session of carrying heavy sh*t, and then hurt your finger shooting hoops…LOL!!
And they say weightlifting is dangerous!
powercleans 1x5@45, 1x5@65, 6x5@85
bench 22@65
(there’s a competition at my gym every year in November or so to see how many reps you can bench, men at bodyweight, women at half bodyweight. I’ve never tried for a max number of reps, so I decided to see how I would do. The past winner was something like 28; I would have placed.)
squats 1x5@45, 1x5@95, 1x5@115, 1x5@135, 2x5@155, 1x5@175
low box squats 1x5@45, 1x5@95, 3x5@115
I was going to try for a squat PR but I just couldn’t “remember” how to lead with my hips instead of my knees and it was a godawful mess. The low box is quite low, and hard; I had to bail a couple times before I figured out how to push from the down position.
pullups 5/3/3/3/3 (PR!)
Ah, parents.
I mention that I’ve been lifting weights and they’re all, “Well, don’t disfigure yourself.”
“Disfigure myself?”
“You know, become like those socialist women.”
Well, Dad,
a.) I don’t juice myself full of steroids,
b.) I’m not eating to bulk,
c.) You just got done telling me how I “looked great” and “lost weight,” (which I haven’t, but apparently it looks that way?) so when you find out I’ve been lifting all summer, shouldn’t that reassure you that it, in fact, doesn’t turn people into East German tank-ladies?
d.) Given that your biology education was Lysenkoist, I think you’re not the world’s expert in human physiology.
5 miles.
Running after dark in the woods is spooky. I never realized how vulnerable you feel when you truly can’t see. It’s no wonder people developed mythology about the moon – that bright point in the sky is such a source of reassurance.

Just tell your dad you promise not to become like all the lesbotronic ladies on T-Nation.
Oh, God, I can only imagine.
Lesbotronic powerlifters who use swear words – and Canadian at that!
AlisaV - You are very strong. Go girl go!

Oh cool that sounds like fun. I’m going to try that this afternoon.
deadlifts:
1x5@135, 1x5@175, 1x5@225, 1x4@235, 1x3@245, 1@250 (PR!)
I had something of an audience for this; several googly eyes.
No, I wasn’t being a weenie for not getting 5 reps; I was working at my limit and I have the butt-ache to prove it.
bench:
1x10@45, 1x5@65, 1x5@85, 4/3/4@90 ![]()
squat:
1x5@45, 1x5@95, 1x5@115, 1x5@135
(didn’t have time to work up to high weights before the gym closed. Maybe this whole never stretching thing is a bad idea, also. I feel like hip flexibility is limiting me – still fighting the temptation to bend my knees first. I should do bodyweight squats, I guess. Any other ideas?)
So – discovery – there are powerlifters at my school! Some kind of club.
I have half a mind to ask if I can train with them in the fall, if they don’t mind a newb (and girl) joining in. I’d really like the accountability, as well as a chance to learn the sport, get better form, and just basically benefit from their experience. I probably don’t belong in that group, since they seem to be pretty damn strong, but I am really good at being meek and unobtrusive and I think I wouldn’t offend anybody.
If they’re real, and you are too, they’ll be glad to have you there.
Go for it!
Alisa, you crack me up, “I am really good at being meek and unobtrusive…”
I say go for it … what’s the worst that can happen? They say no and you’re no better or worse off than you are now? They say yes and you have accountability working for you…![]()
Ok, have written the email, now just have to wait and see.
10 sprints, 30s each (PR for # of sprints and now I just want to never get out of bed again.)
Alisa this is the first time I’ve visited your log (I gotta get my ass away from SAMA!!!). You are fricken strong girl!!! I am super impressed with your numbers. Just awesome!!
