Alcohol and Training?

If you have never tried it, why comment on it? You have no clue what your reaction would be, and chances are you’d be fine to train a day or two. Being 20 is very different than being 30+ (hell even 25+, I’ve noticed my hangovers got significantly worse out of college).

Fat slows down digestion. The alcohol spends more time in the stomach, where some of it is broken down by alcohol dehydrogenase. Some of the alcohol gets absorbed by the food and never gets into the blood.

I wish MODOK would weigh in on this… physiologically/biologically, i’m curious as to how detrimental weekend binge drinking is to weightlifting/fitness. Got plastered last night and the night before, worked out after both sessions. Numbers seemed alright, although i definitely didnt feel good.

Recovery is a very important part of training. If you get hammered two nights in a row, you are shitting on your recovery. Can you hit a couple of average-quality workouts in that state? Yeah, sure. Is it sustainable or intelligent? Probably not.

Pushing through a workout when it feels like shit (not brutal in a good way), IMHO is ALWAYS detrimental to some extent. Binge drinking is essentially willfully putting yourself into that situation. I can empathize with those who struggle to work out through a very stressful schedule, illness, or something else that forces them into a situation of this type, but why would you essentially create that situation by shitting on your body?

Is it a huge problem to have a handful of drinks one or two nights a week? Not really. But binge drinking and getting shithammered on the regular is just ridiculous if you seriously value fitness.

You can also read an article on lean gains by martin b. that goes into the research on drinking and talks about drinking and weights and recovery and other things as well.

If you’re going to a bar that serves peanuts, snacking on them while you drink helps slow down the absorption of alcohol.

Going to parties, means I am going to be up until late. There goes my morning workout. My goals are being the best of me, the strongest of me, the fastest of me. I have a social life. I go out with friends. I have fun with my friends. If in order to get laid and have crazy teenage sex I have to party 3 times a week, drink, and eat crap all week long, no thanks.[/quote]

Funny it never really made me sick but did give me some really really bad hangovers.

alcohol is detrimental to your training efforts not only because of all of the physical effects, but it’s also a huge distraction in my opinion. in order to be truly serious about your training/goals you can’t drink under any circumstance. a lot of guys drink and get results, but could be getting more if they didn’t. im sure ill get hell from someone for saying that but that’s basically how i feel.
