I haven’t seen much discussion about alcohol on here, so I was wondering if anyone drinks, and what kind of effect they notice on performance in the gym?
Im not talking about going into the gym hungover, but more like if you go out on the weekend and have a few beers, do you notice a difference the next week in the gym?
Personally even if I have just a couple of beers at the weekend I can lose a rep on some lifts, or dont improve. Now it may sound like coincidence, but it seems to happen pretty consistently each time Ive been out drinking, and I notice I improve much faster if Ive gone a month or longer without drinking. What does everyone else think?

I don’t get the problem and/or question.
You drinking leads to decrease in performance in the gym. You not drinking leads to progression.
I think it’s obvious which one most people on here will want.
I made a thread on this way back when I 1st joined. It depends. What does have a few beers mean? Are you getting drunk? I’ve got high tolerance so drinking 4 or 5 beers on a Friday night isn’t going to get me drunk or affect my workout. I hardly get drunk anymore, but over a year ago I’d get wasted every weekend. That did adversely affect my training. But that’s kind of obvious.
If you drink 3 beers the night before you lift and it makes you miss reps, I’d say it’s psychological.
few beers, could be 3-8, usually only 3-4 though and I can still notice the difference in the gym.
Obviously I would quit drinking if I was 100% focused on progression, but I was just wondering if anyone here can get away with drinking, even heavily, as I know a few people that can and it still make good progress in the gym
I’m 19 and this is the first year I’ve indulged in some alcohol lol. Never been a drinker before, have been a DD since I was 15 years old haha NO LICENCE BABY!
For me it doesn’t do anything…might be the serbian genetics but I will polish 2 mickeys of vodka and be alright the next day. Just make sure you drink plenty of water.
The alcohol doesnt affect me at all…it’s the SLEEP that does.
It’s going to bed at 5am, then waking up really late.
That fucks up your meals and everything.
Yeah it was fun with the parties to drink n whatever…I’m already over it lol.
Just gotta get your motherfuckin priorities in order…what’s more important?

x2. lol
yes, i regularly consume more than reasonable amounts of alcohol on the weekend. i do this because it generally leads to sex with random girls of a consenting age.
I’ve been known to put away my share of booze, and it hasn’t had any long term effects (unless it is somehow related to back/shoulder injuries).
I can state that one of the best sessions I’ve ever had was the day after polishing off a couple pitchers of beer, but it probably had more to do with the entire large pizza that I put down…

I have put a shot of vodka in a protein shake. It was cookies and cream flavored, and tasted fine until I came across a chunk that exploded when I bit down on it. Nothing but vodka flavor with that part.
I use to get hammered on a Saturday night, be hung over all day on Sunday and come Monday I would weirdly enough have some of my best workouts. My performance was fine. The way my body started looking was a whole other issue.
If you drink a lot on the weekend then your probably getting a lot of shitty empty calories so if you dont have a fast metabolism thats going to be bad for your physique.
I will second that I think it has more to do with the lack of sleep that usually goes along with it. I really only drink once a month or so. I have sunday off training every week and I usually drink saturday, I’ve had some GREAT workouts on the monday after I got wasted on saturday. I think it might have something to do with the amount of food I put away once I get drunk.
last weekend I went out on sunday though and my leg training day on monday was sub par.
I must say the times when I have made the fastest progress is when I have not gone out and not had much stress.

Just wanted to tidy that one up a little extra for you. No need to thank me.
In terms of lifting heavy weights (performance), I would say that it doesn’t have a huge effect if any at all. Physique wise, it will make you fatter I believe simply because they are empty calories, usually consumed at night.
