Advice for a New Lifter?

Thanks! I’ll start one tonight. I’m really keen to learn and make the most of my time as a beginner.

I think that my avatar picture and his instagram pictures that are in better lighting and posed are similar, in terms of overall development. This really isn’t a great shot of him. He looks bigger and more defined (as he should) in good lighting.

yeah as a beginner its all pretty similar.
IMO opinion you want to start out with building a base of strength and athleticism and so lean more towards sort of "powerbuilder " programs popular on Tnation that have a heavy/strength element somewhere in there. 5/3/1 for at least part of the year is the go-to for tons of guys on here. Waterbury stuff worth a look also.

Saw your log and including a bit of 3x5 stuff is fine for that at this stage. Also really push the calories a couple days a week if going for a 6day split.

Like I said previously, read some Dan John articles(he coaches young guys to get very strong, fast) and will help you see wood from the trees

My maintenance is 2500 and I’m eating approximately 2800. You think that’s enough? (weight 75kg, height 184cm) Should I be eating more on some of the days? I’ve noticed that i’m still pretty hungry even when I eat near the 3000cal mark.

How long have you been at that caloric intake? How much have you gained?

For about one week and a half. Last week I saw quite rapid weight jump from 72. 5to 74.8kg, however I believe this is normal because of glycogen, water and food mass? (i’m doing a 6 day PPL, by the way) I’m definitely seeing smaller weight gains now - I was 75.1 on the scale this morning.

If you are comfortable with the rate of gain, keep calories the same.

Training 6 days a week is too much in my opinion.

I’m probably gonna have to dial it down in about 3 weeks. I’m on holiday, so i thought I might as well use the spare time while I have it. Also that way, i can get more confident with the movements since I’m practicing more. How many days would you say is ideal?

This is a loaded question/hot topic lol. The answer truly depends on you. Plenty of evidence to show that 3 days per week works great, also plenty to show that 6 days per week works great. Both have their place, depending on the person and their ability to recover.

IMO running PPL 6x per week would not have much negative impact for your recovery considering your relative new-ness. I say that because heavy ass weights cause a lot of Central Nervous System (CNS) ‘damage’ that take longer to recover from. Lighter weights, though still capable of causing CNS ‘damage’, don’t have as significant of an impact - meaning you can recover a bit faster.

@sparkyo is going to disagree here, but I think PPL 6x per week is fine until you reach a point that your lifts are interfering with the following days’ training. I will say that after a certain period, you will need to reduce training volume a lot by either doing PPL 4x or 3x per week - if you choose to stick with that program.

the “how many days per week” question is every bit as debatable now as it was 70 years ago unfortunately lol

You need to balance frequency, intensity and volume. If you increase frequency, you have to reduce intensity or volume.

In other words, the amount of days that are ideal depends on what you’re doing on those days.

Yes. …6 day PPL is used by many vets just to lean out +young guys often end up just spinning their wheels if dont eat really big.
As you are doing like a 3 week training blast I personally recommend keeping cals 2800 and then go buck-wild one day a week like 4000 and throw in a bit of junk/whatever you are craving. Do this on legs or whatever bodypart you want to bring up.
As just one day a week you will not, and should not gain any fat at your age and height(if training hard)

I think 6 days is fine in the short term but expect to feel a little fried at the end.
Afterwards switch to 3-4 day template like I linked and others mentioned and just do tough conditioning on off days if really feel the need for ‘more

Thanks for the advice! Gonna give the wild day a try today. Does this food get used by the muscles I’m worked today?

Digestion and muscle recovery is a continuous process. It’s always occurring.
