Help me understand something. I’m 6" tall and currently 215lbs. I’m about 10% BF with 16.5" cold arms and wearing 32" waist pants. My goal is to be 215-220lbs and around 8% BF. I eat a clean diet and am getting in anywhere from 2400-3000 calories a day. I write down everything that I eat, but have just started using Fitday.com so I can get a better picture of my diet. I’m currently doing Chad Waterbury’s Waterbury Method program and run at least twice a week.
What I don’t understand is why if I continue to follow my current diet why won’t I lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. I use to weight 370lbs (not a typo) and am very paranoid about gaining fat. I’m in the best shape of my life and like the way I look, but still want to reach my goals. I don’t want to go through the typical bulking / cutting diets. I’d like to continue as I am even if it means slower gains. So, will my plan work at getting me to my goals?
From one former fattie to another (no offense) I don’t necessary believe in the you are either loosing fat or gaining muscle i think that is possible to do both at the same time but at a slower rate which i think is good for former fatties. Personally i’m done with the traditional “bulk” thing, and going towards something like you are doing. best of luck, isn’t the fear of getting fat again terrible…
It sure is!!! I had sleep apnea, hypertension, enlarged heart, could hardly breath, and on my way to being diabetic. Doc basically said I had to do something before it was too late. I’ve lifted for the past 15 years and use to be real strong, but was always fat too. I’m not very strong anymore, although it’s coming back, but now I look good and feel good.
I have this last bit of fat on my lower stomach and back that I want gone and then I’ll be real happy. This is the first time I’ve ever been able to see my abs. I’m finally starting to get the split down the center of my abs.
First off, konrads on your success to date.
Secondly, yes you can do it, but it is not easy. All of the variables must be spot on: training, nutrition, rest, supplementation, etc. It may take longer than going through traditional bulking and cutting phases, but for guys like you (and me), it is a million times more comfortable and doable due to the PSYCHOlogy of our FFB paranoid brains.
BFG
It is possible, but it is tough. My boyfriend use to go on “bulking” and “cutting” phases. However, now he is training under DC training principles(look it up) and doing cardio to keep his bodyfat in check while continually gaining. It is working quite well for him, as he is far from a beginner.
The training is hitting each bodypary part frequently, utilizing rest-pause technique highly, and eating…well…a lot, but clean and adhering to his own dietary measures that work well for him. Doing all of this has allowed him to have visible muscle gains with apparent fat loss. But I will say it is a very slow process that takes a lot of patience.
Any one who tells you that you can’t gain muscle and lose fat at the same time is wrong… but as mentioned it is not easy and in most cases progress won’t be as quick as a normal bulking/cutting setup.
Be consistant on your diet… i.e. monitor how many calories your taking every day and adjust freaquently as you monitor progress.
also sounds like if you could benifit from some more pure strength style training

I feel your pain man, I am a year out since my last surgery for sleep apnea and just starting to get strong and feel good again. It feels good to be back, congrats on gettin better.
I’m going to take some pics tonight so I can post a before and after. I use to have a hard time talking without being out of breath, now I can run long distance no problem at all.
There was a time when I could bench 435 and squat over 500lbs. I miss being strong like that, but I don’t miss being fat.

Sleep apnea sucks!!! I don’t miss waking up choking. I also don’t miss that stinking CPAP machine.
