39yo. Getting back into strength training.
When I’m coming out of the squat my knees crack like crazy. This wouldn’t bother me, except for the fact that there’s an immense amount of pressure behind my knee caps and it feels like they are about to explode.
I put my old wraps on last week and that feeling was gone, but I feel like the wraps are providing too much assistance and it’s cumbersome to put them on and take them off between sets.
I’m looking for a good pair of compression sleeves that will provide support, but not assistance and stay in place. What out there is worth the money?
Welcome. Your knees may ache, but I am not sure 39 is an old man!

I’m a fan of Mark Bell’s slingshot knee sleeves.

I personally use Rehbands, specifically these.
I am sure the Mark Bell’s mentioned are great as well. SBDs are also popular.

We all THINK we’re old, until we get older and realize, THAT wasn’t old, but surely this is.

Might be a form issue.
Might be your overdoing it.
Any history of knee issues?
I heard a good quote once: “Old is always 15 years from now”.

I like that. Simple, and easy to remember.

Also 39, had acl reconstruction at 19. My knees are very loud but noise and pain aren’t necessarily connected. Ill get some pain on my kneecap from where they took patella tendon to make a graft. When that happens i switch to box squats. Descend slowly, focusing on sitting back and pushing your knees out. Hip draaahhhve. I avoid highbar and front squats when my knees get achey.
As we become grizzled old men, finding ways to lift around pain becomes the name of the game.

Hah! Also 39 with an ACL reconstruction (mine at 29) and a similar issue. I talk about how I play music when I train not so I can listen to music, but just to drown out the noise my knees make.

The arthritis in my left knee got bad enough a bone spur tore my first ACL repair, leading to my second tear - I tripped on a sidewalk and fell into some bushes (also dumping my toddler son into the bushes with me) on the way into a Buffalo Wild Wings. The first tear was also a non-contact injury, so neither story was cool.
Anyway, I’ve used both the aforementioned Mark Bell knee sleeves and Rehbands. Both 7mm. I was a little skeptical of the Mark Bell ones, because they’re so short compared to others, but I really like them. Both are solid choices. I think anything that’s 7mm neoprene is probably a fair choice.
