So I’m currently healing an open wound, 10 weeks in, from a surgery. Wound is near my tailbone. I have had this situation on going for the past couple years as it has previously had trouble healing and also needed further surgery. Anyways I’m looking to heal this up as soon as possible obviously. I am currently going to a wound clinic and they are overseeing healing from a medical perspective, but does anyone have any other experience healing wounds. I covering the basics of just good health; vitamins, lots of sleep, lots of water, good diet, lots of protein. Anything else anyone can think of? There’s a lot of smart folks on here so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
Also does anybody have any input on whether it would be a good idea to take time off from the gym completely? I took a week off and I’m debating on taking another. Hard to tell if it definitely helped or not. My surgeon said to obviously not do anything that bothers the area, but he doesn’t know much about how training other than that.
Just trying to cover the basics and any input is welcome. Thanks

are you using any type of electrical current (estim) to help with healing?

No sir, I didn’t even know that was used for wound healing. Just for further information I am using a solution called dakines (think thats how its spelled) to soak gauze and lay in wound bed. It was quite a large wound, but now its only 1.5cm long and quite superficial so isn’t being packed. Also am using an anti fungal cream around wound. Both of those are prescribed by wound clinic. Once a week or so the wound is cauterized with silver nitrate to stop hyper granulated tissue.
Hi there, I had a surgery involving cuts under along the crease between thigh and groin around and under the buttock. It’s an area of a lot of movement and moisture so it took about 8 weeks to close up.
What seemed to help most with healing was to use something like steri strips or fixomull over the wound and cover with gauze which was taped down. I then wore compression garments over this to keep it tight and let the wound drain. Without it being semi-closed by the fixomull it didn’t seem to be healing at all. When I did keep it semi closed it healed much faster.
Also not sure if they are telling you to keep it dry? That’s bad advice and actually not current best practice. I heard this from medical staff though …
Is there any reason why they aren’t resuturing the wound? Any other complications that are slowing wound healing?
As for training my surgeon said to do nothing at all - though mine was in a different area.
One device that might help though I didn’t use it are vacuum healing dressings. Essentially they put special stuff in the wound bed and then apply a special wound padding that has a tube that applies a slight vacuum. It’ll suck the good stuff into the wound bed and draw out the excess into the gauze.
One thing to keep in mind if you don’t know is that the wound will heal from the bottom up so it’s kind of important to keep the wound clean but not too clean. Cleanign too often and too aggressively can negatively impact wound healing time. Betadine, alcohol etc should not be used either.
I’m sure if you’re going to a wound clinic they’ve done the best they can. I know having an open wound really realy sucks and it was so awesome when I could finally not have to worry too much about the wound anymore. I did heaps of reading to see what’s out there… if I were you I’d do the same. Some of the advice I got from medical staff was actually decade old and not good.

I appreciate the reply [/quote]
it has good evidence for its use, i would consider looking into it or getting more information on it.

Wow thanks for the detailed reply. Yeah Im supposed to keep it moist, the gauze that is placed against the wound is soaked in a solution and the area stays moist pretty well. Any yeah I am aware its supposed to heal from the inside out, but that was something that initially took a bit to understand. The wound is largely superficial now, but it did heal considerably. Third time I have had this done, second time it has been left open so if I struggled with the concept of healing from the inside out I have it down now hah. I’m very glad I’m far enough in to not have to pack it daily. That was the worst pain I have ever experienced by far. I have never heard of the vacuum wound dressings though. Also my surgeon after this surgery told me only upper body stuff. However, because things are healing a little slow I’m in the midst of taking three weeks completely off… Thanks again for your reply and I’m glad to hear your wound healed well
