Abused Bulldog: Just a grumpy SOB

On other matters, your training is looking real strong. I look forward to seeing how you tear things up at the meet.
Thanks Carl. D day is soon to be here. I seems Meat ,Pete and myself will all be doing Meets on the same day. Ive decided not to get myself worked up over this Meet.Im just going to go in hit some good numbers and have fun with it.Im going to go into it and treat it like I would a trainning day.

Often that attitude leads to very good results, at least with my competitions.

" The Universe could give two shits less about your strength to weight ratio" —Mark Rippetoe in interview
I dig that quote.
Me too up to a point. Like I’m all about absolute strength as a measure of being “strong”. As in relatively strong is nice, but just plain effing strong is better.

It also means that if you need to pull a 500lb log off of someone the Universe isn’t impressed by your 450lb 2xBW DL and let the last 50lbs slide. The poor bastard is still stuck.
Joe, are you giving the ‘functional’ strength argument? It kind of sounds like it. Does anyone really give a shit what the theoretical universe is impressed with? Personally, I train to get strong and win meets within the parameters set out by the fed in which I compete. I’m not all that concerned about anyone stuck under a log.
Sorta wish I keeped my mouth shut.
Where’s the fun in that? I typically keep my mouth shut and wish I’d spoken up. I should drink more. It lubricates the verbiage.

Because I sit at the lighter end of the spectrum and am a woman, I’m unlikely to ever be competing against the big boys regardless of training. I get a bit thin skinned about comments that I perceive to be dismissive about relative strength. It’s as if the smaller guys (or girls) are the red headed step-children.

However, having said the above, it’s not an attitude I’ve run into in the competitive community. My observation is that people who have a lot of competitive experience have a decent appreciation of what it takes to succeed regardless of size. If you’re going to win, or set records or hit elite or anything else, you’re not doing for the people who are in the audience. If that’s what you’re there for, you might as well not show up. If you only think the biggest guys have value, don’t show up. There will always be someone bigger and stronger.

This isn’t directed at you Bulldog or anyone in particular. I was just picking on Joe a little. This is a bone that gets stuck in my craw. It’s actually easier to look a bigger people and think they’re better because they’re bigger. I tend to look at the ones who are smaller than me, and they are absolute freaking beasts leaving me no excuse

End of rant. Continue with the regularly scheduled kick ass lifting.

“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” (insert appropriate dog picture here Bulldog)

It has been my experience that the people with the inordinate amounts of relative strength worked their butts off to get there, and most definitely have a lot of fight in the dawg. I’m only 5’8", 185, but if I got caught up in some random bar fight (much more likely scenario than some giant thingamajig falling on me from the heavens), I’d much rather take on the big ex-football player than the 168 lb wrestler/MMA guy. MUCH.

That log example originated as some giant boulder example (read the original article, hated it), and in my .00002 opinion is so contrived that I feel compelled to respond to it when able. I’d like to add (no offense Joe, just piling on, heh) that the theoretical universe is not going to hand you a handy weight belt, so the 500 lb deadlifter will still not be able to lift the 500 lb log.

Wrt wrestling/boxing/MMA, etc., the “mid-weight” classes are the best because these guys are big enough and strong enough to do some real damage, i.e. knock each other out, but yet are light enough that they have the energy levels to maintain a high level of action. The little guys are energizer bunnies, but are usually not strong enough on an absolute basis (hah) to do real damage. The big heavyweights are carrying too much poundage, and have to rest after every few moves. (exceptions to the rule of course)

(Sorry to clutter up your thread, Bulldog.)

Ok Ive got a little time to clear up what I mean in regards to the Rippetoe quote. First off this doesnt apply to athletes in regards to performance. In its orginal context. In deals more so with you average gym lifter. The 250lbs bench at 150 was a real bad example since the people im pointing my fingure at arent going to put it up in the first place. Im talking about the types of guys who are afraid to add extra bodyweight in the first place due to there fear of lossing there six pack. And thay will say but im strong for my size types.Of course these type want to add extra meat on there frame but they dont seem to understand the need to add extra bodyweight nor the need to get stronger to help reach there goals.Again my ability to express myself by written words sucks ass.

If anything I need to develope the ability to have a On and Off switch. To be on the “On” when im on the plat form and “Off” in between. The past few Meets im always on the “On” setting. So towards the end of the Meet im pretty burned up.
