A Slight Hammie Issue

Alright, so these threads always annoy me personally, but I guess I’ll make a quick one anyway.

Quick synopsis: The last few days it’s been all the way up to 50-60 degrees around here (sauna,) so I’ve been doing a fair bit of power-walking. Actually, a LOT of it. In three days I think I managed to squeeze out 3 three-mile sessions per day. No biggie, I just wanted to get outdoors and get a bit of exercise as well.

Well, last night I noticed a definitive stiffness in my hammies. Again, no biggie, I took some Ibuprofun, smeared some Icy Hot on there (something I tend to avoid,) and stretched it out quite a bit.

This morning, I woke up and it didn’t feel a whole lot better. Considering leg day was today, I wasn’t overly thrilled about the way it was feeling. I did a VERY small amount of fasted morning cardio (15-20 min) to try and get it loosened up and crap before I had to go sit in class.

When it came time to actually work out, my buddy and I were doing the mobility complex (OV squats, lateral lunges, rev. lunges, and sots press.) During these, and especially the lateral lunges, my left hammie started to bother me a fair share. This had me nervous.

So after finishing the mobility, we started warming up with front squats. On my FIRST warmup set of 115, when I reached the hole on about my second rep, my hammy sent me a “Don’t do it!” signal. I decided that I didn’t want to risk injury, and I coached my buddy through the day.

I guess I’m just curious as to some input regarding what people think the issue may be. Again, I didn’t have too much of an issue playing DDR this morning, and I actually killed it for 20 minutes on an intense elliptical session after my [buddie’s] workout with no issue. Big things are the way it feels in the hole, doing lunges, and even walking a bit.

I’m not overly worried about this, but I’d like to know my limits. I was thinking about calling leg day off alltogether this week and working on it, but if it’s feeling better I was thinking about trying a leg day or Tabata FS’s either tomorrow or Thursday (on a WS4SB1 split.)

Anyway, I currently lay on my couch, two ice packs near the top part of my hammie, closer to my ass than not (where the most pain is generated,) and down towards the middle-part of the leg.

Anyway, any input is greatly appreciated as always.

I used to get that when lifting and playing soccer quite often. I found that resting it from heavy lifting for about a week coupled with lighter soccer workouts (ie only ball work - no fitness like shuttle runs, sprints, or long distance running) did the trick.

I never did it before to my hamstrings, but try foam rolling, too.

Cool, thanks. I was planning on taking the week off definitely. I’ll look into foam rolling (something I’ve been needing to get to anyway.)

And to think some personal mctrainers probably read this and were inspired.
