A Grown Man BMX Bike

Since we have some people who ride here and no one really responded to my post on GetSpike.com, has anyone else been using Spike before riding?

Campy…awesome pics…I guess this means I have to “show-off” my shoulder and ankle - lol

nice pics seriously - later

In faith,

I used Spike a few times before riding. First time I really didn’t notice anything spectacular. Second time out w/ Spike I hit some pretty technical singletrack. I don’t know if this will make sense but, it seemed I was able to process what I was seeing in front of me much faster and therefore was able to react better and ride harder. Since then I have been taking Spike before I ride and have loved the results.

You will need some video for the shoulder FYI, or just have them go rent Lethal Weapon and imagine you as Mel.

Chris,

Something you might consider is a MTB with dual 24" as it’s more durable than most MTB but larger than a BMX which I think you’ll like.

Personally I’m a trials rider so I’m a little odd in that regard but a nice P2 or P3 with dual 24" wheels would be pretty comparable to a BMX but larger.

The downside of a larger bike is that they spin slower.

Anyone know anything about cyclocross bikes? I’m a bit of a speed junkie and miss the speed of the road bike but I dont want to give up some of the things a mountain bike offers…never satisfied.

Campy:
Those pics are great, I did the same exact crash 3 years ago and people still ask if the scars on my shoulder are fresh heh heh. It made me start wearing a full face helmet mind you, but then I do downhill so thats probably a good idea anyway. Talking of which I ride a Mountain Cycle San Andreas freeride bike with marzocchi bombers. Its not a BMX but its tough enough to go urban, frames light too so with a chain guard you can even do some trials stuff (its knackering though!). It can really hold its own downhilling too, I guess thats why they call it ‘freeride’.

I have experienced the same thing. It’s amazing the difference Spike makes. I’m surprised more people haven’t caught on to using it for stuff like this. Can’t wait to take my big bike (8" travel front and rear) back to Moab with Spike.

Cross bikes don’t really compare to mtbs. Sure, you can ride moderate single track, but they don’t handle technical/rocky terrain well. They are much more delicate than an mtb. You’re better off setting up a mountain bike narrow semislicks at high psi if you want speed and the ability to ride offroad.

I love flat tracking on a cross bike, but stick to mtbs for real offroad riding.

Hey Chris,

This bike is a dual 24" trials bike. Basically it’s a MTB designed for urban assault type riding, should ride pretty similar to a BMX but a little larger.

It’s the Ashton Eddie Tongue model.

That’s kind of like my old Kuahara 24".

The half-BMX, half-mountain bikes are cool. This might better suit me. Most cost more than I want to spend (I just don’t need an $1100 bike yet) but this Diamondback looks okay and should be between 200 and 400 bucks. Haven’t found the exact price yet.

Chris,

You can check out this link for reviews, pricing, and links to tons of bike manufacturer’s websites.

Check out the DK General Lee 24".

BMXers interest me. I hear that they are some of the fastest riders from 0-30mph. Anyone have any stats of their sprint performance. Like the top guys must be wicked fast.

i’m just a roadie/trackie who loves drag racing cars from stoplights.

Five years ago at the national finals an exercise phys student was testing pros and the average vertical was in the low 30s and wattage was in the low 2,000 range, I believe.

that’s what i expected. i assume they were peaking in the low 2000s.

last fall I tested myself at a whopping 17inch vertical, and 1800 peak. i am more of an endurance cyclist, with the road racing.

Dein-
How was Tampa? Looking foward to some vids.

I can tell you that a few years ago Jamie Staff (brit BMX pro) was training with Britain’s Olympic track racing team … on his first test he broke their machine because he was so powerful. He pummeled everyone elses results once they got it working again.

If only, if only there was a site…you know Xtreme BMX - for riders, by riders

oh well - just an idea. How could a site like that exist.

btw…got off the plane, paddled out and going to ride now - later
