A Dog's 531 Journey

Kevin, Strick,

I was hungry when I started that session and I was supposed to do 5x10 on the BBB at 155#. so I dropped the weight and still pussed out on completing them. Lot’s of different things affected me last night.

Damn, I missed everyone’s birthday. Happy belated. 48, the age I got out of the service (sniff). You’re getting better every year. Way to take control of your life. Many more.

Thanks Harry, just two more years and you can tell me the secrets of the universe or whatever it is you’ve been holding out on…

Dog,

I have really enjoyed following your log the last few weeks. I tried out 531 for a month following the routine from Wendler’s article. I felt great after the first cycle and bought the book. Now I am looking forward to cycle 2.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the inspiration.

Great squat work! You’ll be at 1.5x BW any day now, I can tell.

I wouldn’t sweat not meeting or beating your reps. The thing I’m finding is that as I push past my previous weight 1RMs, I can’t seem to hit the high reps any more, but I do seem to be able to push out the same number of reps with each weight increase on the money sets (e.g. 6@x, 6@x+10, 6@x+20, etc.) I consider that a huge victory even though it’s not a jaw-dropping rep set.

After all, my goal here is to get strong, not do marathon lifting sessions. There’s a reason you don’t see folks like Meat going for 10 reps at 600.

Thanks askjeff!

Thanks mcl - not stessing over not matching just the usual frustration…

Modeling my new mantard for all of you…

Ride to Salina +3 miles 422 to go

Nice work! After seeing the 4th rep, I thought the 5th would go. It will next go around.
Mantard caught me off guard (I watched the video before reading the post). It works…and, apparently, is worth a PR.

Nice PR! Where did you end up buying the Mantard? It looks like a good one.

Online at Dick’s sports. it’s reversible, I’ll model the blue side tomorrow with deadlifts.

Good work, Sd. I would like to compete down the road but I am WAY to vain to wear a mantard.

The mantard is approved.

Sexy mantard. Nice set up on the bench. Have you downloaded the USAPL rule book yet? I would start practicing using their commands, they can be pretty strict there.

Thanks Pete. I have downloaded their rulebook and practiced the commands on singles. Just not any good at doing reps with a pause on the chest. I’m thinking about keeping the 185 as my bench opener since those 4 reps felt pretty good.

Sounds like a great plan.

Great PR SD! you’ll be at 205 and then 225 in no time!

Hot lookin’ mantard, too. I see you got the moose-knuckle attachment.

heavy stress increase on the home front, son got caught with a pipe, a bag and packs of cigs at school. three days before he would have completed his stuff to get a shoplifting ticket dismissed. fought with his mother and left home before I got here. did just talk to him and he says he’s not coming home this weekend. asked him to keep in touch and told him it’s ok to hand out with his friends.

this just after seeing the doc today about the irregular heartbeat, heavy chest and dizziness I’ve been getting along with not sleeping worth a damn recently. doc thinks it is just the obvious stress and anxiety but is sending me for a stress test and echo-cardiogram. doc was pleased with all the exercise i do and glad that i don’t get the symptoms while exercising. he gave me some lunestra samples but i’m not sure i want to knock myself out or not. going back tomorrow to talk about the sinus pressure and headaches i’ve been getting this last month.

Crap. Sorry to hear that, SD.

Not to be a smartass, but have you considered the military for him? Straightened me out, quick.

we’re looking into boarding schools and he has expressed interest in the marines after high school. but we have to get him through HS first. he’s 15 years old in his sophmore year

Hang in there guy. Get yourself taken care of so you can take care of the family.

Hm. Sounds like a good plan. particularly a military school. Better the military now than jail later. If he’s anything like me when I was that age, he’s probably bored and unchallenged at school, and uses trouble to get attention. The military (or a good military academy) will give 'im both in spades. Assuming he doesn’t try to rebel against that, too. But it sounds as though he’d at least try, if he wants to go Marine later. There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell he’d get away with anything in Marine boot camp.
