A Breath and a Scream

So last night I get hubby into the basement to squat. As you may remember, he has had five knee/leg surgeries - ACL, scope on right knee; patellar, scope on left knee; achilles on left ankle. He is definitely broken. He’s also 6’4", with long legs.

He hasn’t squatted in forever. I got him to warm up with just the bar, and he was pretty tentative. Like I imagine I would be with benching if I were Snapper. Worked him up to around 6x185, then he did lunges, calf work, etc. He was dead, but I am glad he is at least trying to get back to being healthy.

When he asked what I wanted to do, I started to say “I want to put bands on and dive bomb heavy squats, and I want you to spot me because I’m scaredy.” When I started to say that, he basically covered his ears and went “lalalala I can’t hear you.” I wasn’t going to make him do that stuff, but I guess when I do something different like that, he wants nothing to do with it. And when he wants nothing to do with it, he plays Xbox. So instead of doing speed work like that, I did speed work with the light weights with him.

I recognize that right now, at least, if I want to help him in the gym, I am not going to get to do the fun crazy shit I like to do. I’m okay with that for now, but I really hope he will gain some confidence and be willing to work with me, or at least let me do stuff different than him, but with him.

Squat 6x45, 6x95, 8x135, 6x185, 3x5x135 speed dive bombing the descent. No belt.
DB Bulgarian Split Squats 3x6x25s/side
100 calf raises per leg
3x10 hanging leg raises

After the squats, I put the assistance work into a circuit to get a bit of breath moving.

Good for you for working with him, and it’s great that he did something. You’ll get your chance to do your “crazy” shit soon. He’ll get confident with what he’s doing, and hopefully want to try the crazy stuff too.

Nice work, PMPM

Working out with your husband. Brave girl. Fun to read about the experience. You can come dive bomb heavy squats with bands with us anytime. Monday’s our squat day.

Is it wrong that at this point I totally thought this was going to turn into a sex-in-the-basement story?

It is rare that training priorities align between husband and wife. Good for you for taking the initiative.

That’ll have to happen on cardio day.

I LOL’d at this.

I didn’t realize your hubby wasn’t into the whole thing…

Mine has been ‘working out,’ and I hope he keeps it up when he gets back.

was he into it before the injuries or is this new for him?

Working out with the significant other can be QUITE a challenge. Good job, PMPM~

He was a basketball player and runner before the injuries. Every time he has tried to get back into basketball, he has gotten a new injury.

Last night was more snatchy fun. 3x5x50, 3x3x55 one armed DB snatches. ~15 BB snatches with 95. Fast OHSquats with bar only, 3x10.

Too much snatch is never enough…Nice work with the Hubby as well, I have been in his position with the knee surgeries / injuries, it definitely takes some mental fortitude to get back into it.

Like these? (crazy guy in one of my gyms)

That guy in Steely’s video is definitely at legal powerlifting depth, wouldn’t you say PMPM?

So funny you videod someone else in your gym, SteelyD. I did the same thing once, a fellow I have dubbed “Mr. Partial” because his range of motion on any given machine is mere inches and he’s never working the muscle the machine is intended to work.

That is EXACTLY it!

Yesterday was heavy back work. I’m still figuring out a program that works for me and el esposo.

Rack pulls conv just below knee 10x135, 2x6x225, 6x275, 6x1x315.
BB rows 3x10x135.

Around the time I started rowing, I noticed a female - 5’8", 140, looked like she lifted - wandering around and looking at me in the cage. I finished up, and she went in. I went to do cable rows, and watched her in the mirror. She set the bar up for squats, grabbed a bench, and proceeded to do the most beautiful box squats I’ve ever seen in my gym. I was stunned. I went up to her when she was done and told her to kick me out of the cage if she needs to squat and I’m doing something that can be done outside the cage.

She said thanks, but she’s just here visiting. Dammit.

Anyway, cable rows, one armed: 10x36, 8x48, 6x60, 6x72, 3x84

Seated DB overhead presses, 10x30, 6x32.5, 6x35, 6x37.5, 6x40

rear delt flies 10x12.5, 10x15

Okay, I have been on program and on target, but I don’t have my book with me so I’m not writing everything down. I did ditch cardio last night, naughty me, but I’d been at the hospital all day with my mom so that was exhausting enough.

She had a double masectomy and reconstruction using her own tissues, so lots of microsurgery etc. Things went perfectly. I’m a happy girl.

Good news indeed!

wow.
good to hear!

perfectly is good.

glad to hear it, PMPM~

I’m really glad to hear things went with your mom. That must be very tough on the family.

Ditching cardio is always a good idea.

So, I just got back from Vegas. I managed to get a decent workout in when I was there - although I forgot to bring wrist wraps so I didn’t go very heavy on anything - but most of the time, I was either working, drunk, or hungover.

That place is exhausting.
