5x5 Bench Press

i can do 5x5 with 150 on bench should i start with that or drop the weight? Ive been doing ripptoes for two weeks started with 145 on bench and moved up to 155 on the 3 set of 155 i only got 4 reps. Should i stop doing the 5x5 program and move to a pyramiding program or is it to early?

Don’t be so eager to jump ship. If you can do 150 for 5x5 and bump to 155 and can only do four reps, dont get discouraged. Train to the point where you’re able to complete those 5 reps and thn increase again.

How long have you’ve been doing the program for anyways a week maybe two? Don’t quit do it for say 6-8 weeks and then move to pyramiding if you wish. You’ll never know what benefits the program has in store if you don’t give it time, I cannot emphasize this enough.

Yeah i was doing something similar a couple months ago. I started with 190 for 5 reps for 5 sets. Every week I would add 5 lbs and try to get 5x5 again. I got up to 205 in 3 weeks afterwards i started adding 2.5lbs because 5lbs was getting to be a little much after about 2 months i got up to about 220 I started to Plateau and started doing volume training i can do about 235 for 5 reps now. I would say keep doing it if your making progress.

Bill Pearl was huge but I’ve never seen 5X5 work for anyone else.

it has worked well for me and many other people i know.

5x5 didn’t work for my bench. However, it did raise my numbers in the dip, squat, and deadlift. Depends on the person I guess.

I’ve probably never seen it work for anyone since finding people who train hard in the gym is pretty uncommon.

You could apply the same faulty reasoning to ANY program or methodology. Just because you don’t see people work hard doesn’t mean program X doesn’t work.

If the flaw isn’t in the program itself, what’s the point of even mentioning you’ve never seen it work for anyone?

Yeah. I realized before what I said was stupid. But I never said the program was bad. I just said I’ve never seen it work. You’re just jumping to logical conclusion, man.
