531 Template Recommendation for Triathlon Base Season

Hey,

I bought the book and also the Keylifts app. I am looking for an easy-to-follow template recommendation for strength training as part of my triathlon base-building season. Should I go with :

  • Wendler Classic Anchor, 2 days a week
    or
  • 5/31 Strength circuit, 3 days a week

Or is there another template I should follow?

My goal is to build strength for when triathlon training ramps up and or also put back on some muscle I lost during a marathon training block. I’ve been lifting 2-3 times a week for the past 6 weeks and on and off for a few years. I’d good success with Starting Strength a few years ago but I found heavy squats three days a week impacted a lot on my runs.

Thanks

Why do you think you need it at all? I dont see much potential benefit.

I raced Ironman and shorter stuff for years along with a bunch of ultras and trail marathons. I didn’t do too much weight training. If you like going to the gym I would just do a high volume lighter weight program. If you just wanna train at home get a trx and use some of their programs. You need to be careful putting on much size as I’m sure your aware.
As far as a specific program I’m not that familiar with what’s out there so can’t be of much help with that.
Do you have your season planned?
What races?

I’m doing a half Ironman in the Summer. I’ve done one before. I like strength training, mostly barbell stuff. I have access to a Squat race. Yes, season is planned. I’m still on the base phase.

Nice. If it were me I would do strength but focus on conditioning. Good luck with your race season.
Start a training log so we can follow along and support you.

I think a 531 progression keeping the intensity low shouldn’t be a bad idea. I would keep the intensity of the main sets low (5s pro or capped sets).

I would start without supplemental work.

Assistence should be a lot of rowing, shoulder/hips stability, a lot of core work
