I wish Rybakou or some monster SHW would hit up a powerliftering competition just to show how “weak” weightlifters are
I have a feeling that guys who can pull 400+ pounds over their head in a second would have pretty solid deadlifts, lols
Redding was such a fucking beast, that press is unbelievable, just amazing. I wonder what he could have bench pressed? That lifts makes me think with a little training he could take the raw world record right there.

And you were doing so well up until there… that statement pretty much destroys any credibility that the words the preceeded it had.

Yeah, I got to agree with Hanley.
Plus, Olympic lifters almost never work their chest and rarely do they bench. Just ask CT.
They focus more on their specific lifts and the assistance lifts that go along with them.
But old school olympic lifters didn’t focus on their chest? Didn’t many complain that the standing press as executed by many lifters was essentially a “standing bench press”?
Surely if Redding could press 500 pounds with terrible leverage overhead he could have possibly trained to press 40% more (also raw) with significantly better leverage and a much smaller ROM? Plus his training lifts were supposedly even bigger!
anyway, sorry if that statement is ignorant. There’s no denying that he had incredibly pressing strength though.

Well, I see that you are getting at, but just the part about him getting the raw record is a little too much optimism. Going up 200 lbs make a huge difference and just because someone can press 502 lbs while standing, it doesn’t mean they can press 200+ more lbs while laying down.
Anyways, some people who can press great weight while standing cannot press that much more in the bench press as that is an exercise they were never good.
Really? I’ve never heard of anyone who can strict overhead press anywhere close to as much weight as they bench press, even among flat benchers.
I’m not saying he could have trained for 3 months and automatically taken the world record, but with the stretch reflex, arch, good form, the size of his chest and stomach, and increased leverage, would it really be that surprising for an incredible athlete to bench press 142% of their standing press?
That means his standing press is 70% of his bench press. I’m pretty sure it’s accurate to say that there are very few elite raw bench pressers in the world who can standing press anywhere close to 70% of their bench.
Obviously they don’t train overhead presses like the olympic lifters do and this is a huge factor, but my only point is… it’s not THAT much of a stretch of the imagination to think that Redding could have at least been CLOSE to the current raw bench record.
that’s all =) no disrespect to powerlifters and pardon me if I am inaccurate or anything

The most impressive lift ever. And still some people can´t appreciate it, because they don`t want to admit weightlifters are strong so they make up excuses why this lift is possible.
What idiot doesn’t think weightlifters are strong?
Well, some powerlifters for example. Some people who have never tried it but have heard that technique is important so they think it´s all you need.
I don’t hear anyone saying weightlifters aren’t strong as fuck. Considering Shane Hamman still has the IPF record squat, I think most guys acknowledge that they are freaks.

Can anyone here other than Dr. PowerClean name the third man who officially pressed over 500lbs? Bonus points if you know the exact weight.
The fact is that elite lifters have trained their minds and bodies very specifically. It’s not just about weightlifters not training their bench. One would assume that a guy with a massive C&J woudl have have a massive world class pull. Probably not- they are very different lifts. The power curve and postioning necessary to toss 500 pounds to your neck is a lot different than what it takes to stand up with 820 lbs in your hands. That said- a guy whoe c&j’s 500 willcould trains to pull 820 and get there a lot faster than a guy that pulls 495.
