5/3/1 - Makin' the Reaper Wait

Hopefully i will have my camera stop confusing my cro-magnon like brain and I’ll be lifting with you on the 12th. Your lifts are looking really good in here and I can only envy your DL.

I am very disappointed with that actually. Reps don’t seem to be making my top weights higher. I know it’s first cycle and I’m still adjusting to volume, but this burns me. A month ago I was pulling 495 from my weakest position - sumo - and three easy singles conventional @ 475. Now 465 conventional feels heavy, though it went up fast enough. I’m concerned that I’m just tiring myself out to no good purpose.

Nice pulls, DCA. No worries, those top numbers will come right back. Go eat!

Found this:

Nice job on the deadlies, DCA!

Eeeek! A maoist! er, I mean mouse!

Thanks all.

Q: howcum we all know the economy is badbadbad, but the gummint and the media seem to think otherwise? They can’t be THAT clueless.

When it comes to max attempts at anything, it’s best to leave the calculators in the shirt pockets, and use the MarauderMeat calculator -my recollection is it was something along the lines of finding some guy in the gym who’s about to kidnap your child, then rip his head (bar) off the floor.

When you rip that 500+ lbs off the floor, give yourself a hug, and call yourself Mad Max.

Tony,

If you are worried about the reps vs. top end, here’s a suggestion.

The 5/3/1 guru’s recommend something like this- every other w/out or so (not every workout) hit your prescribed reps (don’t necessarily max out on the last set) then hit some heavy (not max) singles. I think this would work well esp. for deadlifts.

A couple of the guys recommend doing the weeks: 3’s, then 5’'s, then 5/3/1, and hitting some heavy singles on the 3 and 5/3/1 weeks.

For me, hitting a bunch of reps at a lighter weight does not move my top end deads. Hitting a bigger top end, however, will let me hit more reps at that lighter weight. That’s kind of my theory for my strongman training anyway.

Good luck, I’ll keep watching. I’m starting my second cycle of 5/3/1 today too. This time around I was sure to start w/ lower maxes AND I’m using the lower %'s also. Seemed to help out the first cycle, we’ll see this cycle.

That makes a lot of sense and was the sort of thing that worked for me before trying 5/3/1 again. I was doing ~90%+ of a max 3-9 times per week on variations and seeing a lot of progress. I didn’t want to start tweaking the program right off the bat, though. I want to see what it does as written before adjusting it. I think this first cycle is me just getting used to the volume, which is much higher than what I’m used to as I haven’t done more than 20 total reps for any movement in any session for the better part of a year. I’m going to give it a cycle or two, extract what’s working and change what’s not, very likely in the direction of what you suggest.

Thanks for the tip Mark.

7 guys for the deadlift meet @ virtualmeet.net so far. Registration is open until the 9th of Feb. Be cool if some of youse guys want to sign up. It’s not based purely on weight lifted - there are coefficients multiplied in for age and bodyweight, such that older or lighter lifters are competitive with the young heavyweights; or can be if they are strong enough: Even being old and skinny I got my ass handed to me by two young and very strong lifters in the last full meet. Since relative strength is what’s being measured there are no weight classes.

Just checked out the website. Pretty cool.
I like the calculator and the way the videos play. Nice job!

Cycle 1, Week3, Day 3 - Bench Pressticles

BP
140 5x2 sets
155x5
173x5
196x3
219x9+5 (rp, est Max 284.63 !!!Almost a 2 POUND gain!!! Cripes)

CG BP (thumbs length off the smooth)
145 10x4, 12

Bent Rows
195 10x5 sets

Right shoulder cut out on 10th rep attempt again. Concentrated on pushing with the right side on CGBP’s. Going to switch to dips next cycle for bench assistance. I’m being facetious about the bench estimated max gain, but it’s the only lift so far this week that has continued to go up. Bench feels mushy in the shoulders - not popping the weight off the bottom. I lost how to do leg drive on benching again.

2# is 2#!! 2lbs here and 2lbs there, next thing you know, you’re talking about 4 lbs! Good shit, meng!

A: They have never been where the rubber meets the road. They have the same problem in Washington.

Nice week, looks like your meet ready!!!

and shit 2lbs is 2lbs Id take a 1 pound on my bench

Okay - 2lbs more is 2 lbs more. Agreed. I’ll be happy with it.

Got my training lined out for after the meet up to the next meet. AS it works out, I get two weeks after this DL meet to just screw around so I’m going to get to do my 1+5 scheme for about 7 sessions. That’ll be fun and I’ll probably be less tired…

Tony, I’m much further down the DL food chain than you are but I agree about the heavy singles. Only thing is I don’t stop at prescribed reps. I do the money set as intended then give my self a bit of rest. I catch my breath grab some water and then either do a double at 20-30lbs heavier or a single at around +50.

I’ve been doing this for about 2 cycles but only heard about the stuff on elifts 2 weeks ago. It just seemed to help get it in my head that the next cycles DL wasn’t going to be too bad if I could double it after the money set this time.

In any case you are a damn fine lifter and your best is still to come.

Cycle 1, week 3, day 4

Bunches o’ warmup

Squat
135x5
185x5
225x5
247x5
280x3
313x8 (PR + 2 reps, est max 396.38)

Box Squat (2" below parallel)
225 8x3 sets

Sumo DL
260 10x2 sets

One-legged GM (right only)
135x6,8

Pull down abs

Thank God it’s deload this next week.

Once the squats and deads get over 5 reps the fun just goes out the window. Nice training Tony.

Nice skwats white boy!

I don’t get the ‘313’, though. Metric plates?
