5/3/1 - Makin' the Reaper Wait

Fine lifting Tony, never ceases to inspire.

Thank you, Wilson and Joe.

Feel like I’m turning the corner on questioning WHETHER I can lift a certain poundage and beginning to figure out HOW I can get to lifting a certain poundage. That bit of certainty is helping my training immensely.

that is exactly why most enver reach any significant poundages. you have to KNOW that you can do it. if there’s any doubt, you won’t. there’s a running joke among the guys i train with. whenever we are lifting something heavy we say “I don’t think my frame can handle it” awhile back we were benching and this guy looked at the bar and said the above statement. sadly, there was only 225 on the bar.

the body can handle ten times what the mind can.

Big day!

High Anderson Squats(pin 6 - 4" abv parallel)
140x5
210x5
250x3
300x3
340x3
370x3 (PR +1 rep)
410x2 (PR +1 rep)
430x1 (PR +20lbs)
375x5 (PR +30lbs @ 5 reps)

Reverse Band Presses (1 mini - 40 off bottom none off top)
110x5
130x3
145x3
160x3
180x3
200x2
210x1 (push press - feh)
200x2
180x5

Strict Press
140x8,12 (pr +5 lbs @ 12 reps)

Hepburn rows a.k.a “cheater rows”
140x5
230x3
260x3
280x3,3,3

2bd Manpon CG Bench press
140x10
230x6,6

Squats: Woo. Hoo. Buddy. I was feeling strong, but I didn’t know if it was 20 lbs strong or not. This was easier than the 410 I did for a single last time I did these. Started too far forward, but managed to pull it out. The 375x5 also felt easier than the 345x5 from last time.

Banded Presses: Pic of band setup above. Don’t like these. I prefer elevated pin presses. They feel more honest and I can tell better what the carryover is with straight weight than I can with bands. That said, this band setup worked better than the last one. Since they didn’t feel honest, I went ahead and did straight presses for reps.

Cheater rows: Since there are no BB rowing competitions, I’m going to do whatever rows I feel help my back get stronger. These work.

Great session!

Band set up for presses

Nice squats there dude! That’s one hell of a workout session!

Big PRs, great work!

Thanks Steely. I’m not sure my frame can handle it, though…

The sad thing is that I used to believe that.

Nice work.

I like how you are always finding what works for you.

It’s hard, because there’s a lot of cool shit I’d like to be doing, but none of that stuff is going to help me hit my targets. I’m almost ready to de-emphasize lower body - since I"m pretty sure I can squat 400 now - and start working toward the 300 bench and 200 overhead. If I can maintain squat and DL numbers for the comp in Feb, that would be good.

And I think in this cycle I’m missing the hamstring work…which will cost me on DL, so I think I’m gonna put some GMs after banded Anderson front squats tomorrow and I gotta keep rehabbing my right hip. I think the volume and rehab work is the main reason I’ve gotten such a jump in squat numbers.

I still sort of believe it. I mean I know in my head I do x amount of weight but when I’m looking at it and about to get under it somehow I feel much smaller.

Tony-

First- great lifting, all of it. (pretty standard remark for you, I know.).

Second- next time you do your Hepburn (cheat) rows, can you film a set? I’d like to see what you are doing. Thanks.

Third- What comp are you doing in Feb?? I know there’s a charity push/pull in Jan in Sacramento. Then Supertraining is doing an APF meet in March in Sac. (If I get off my ass and start training hard again I hope to try another PL comp next year along w/ the strongman stuff).

Thanks. And…keep up the solid work. Great to see fellow old guys getting after it.

see ya

It’s basically something between a pendlay row and a low clean pull. Instead of standing up though, you just stay bent over and bring the bar to the lower chest. I’ll get some vid anyway though.

I’m doing meets at virtualmeet.net. Deadlift meet in February I’m training for, but I’m also looking to do the full meet after that. No travel, which I like. I still manage to lose 10 lbs as soon as I enter though, virtual or not.

I think there’s a lot to be said for incremental increases, because what was formerly a seemingly huge weight turns into just 2.5 or 5 lbs more than you did last time. It’s a hell of a confidence builder. Sometimes I’ll put up a new PR, know I can do more but stop there so that I know I can PR the next time too. But anything over 90% of max is going to make you grow and get stronger so it doesn’t really even matter if I PR that day. If I don’t PR that day I probably will the next one. In that situation, my conception of my size or strength doesn’t really enter into it.

Great work Tony. Thanks for all the insight, advice and experience, directly and via the log.
Hope you and your family have a great Christmas!

Which would you rather do 2 days before Christmas: Banded front squats or see the play Wicked and eat pate (pah-tay) at an exclusive French restaurant in SF?

I know which I’d pick.

I feel f’n gay now, but at least Im still married…

The marriage can hide the gayness so your safe.

I bet you could sneak out on chritsmas day and hit the garage.

Front squats were eating at me, so I went and did this till 11:15 PM

Banderson Front Squat (small bands, pin 5)
140x3
170x3
200x3
230x3
260x1 (Baseline PR)

Bands off
300xfail,fail (but broke it off the pins both times. It will fall soon)
290x1 (PR + 10 lbs)

Concentric High GMs (pin 8 - around the short ribs)
300x5
320x5
340x5 (PR +5lbs and +2 reps)

Overhead Lockouts (Pin 15 - 4" abv head)
140x10
190x5
210x3
230x3
250x3
270x1 (PR + 10 lbs)
240x5 (PR + 10 lbs)

Rows and tris tomorrow sometime.
