400 Pound Rows => Cramps

It’s the fourth time I’ve ever done barbell rows with 400 pounds.

Evidently cheated, but nothing special, just a bump at the start of the movement.

I got 3 sets of 4 reps each, and I also did 2 working sets with 308 and 330 pounds.

Today is the next day. I’m feeling absolutely ok, but I’ve got these awful middle back cramps, from time to time, that send me lying down on the floor (laughing from the sudden pain).

What should I make of this? It’s a first for me.

I have no idea what to make of that, just wanted to say that is a Phenominal row.

The Beast or Thibs might know. Beast posted that high of a row, and Thibs was training him at that point, so they could tell you from experience.

When you slip a disc in your back it can pinch nerves which then cause weird sensations such as yours.

Lay off the rows and start doing spinal alignment rehab work

You just made me go “oh fuck”.

Still, the way I’m feeling these I think I’ve worked the muscle so hard, it’s cramping whenever I don’t keep my back fully extended. Is that possible, or is the spinal disc slip thing a sure bet?

Your middle back shouldn’t hurt from rowing unless you messed it up. This is just another reason why people should ditch barbell rows for either chest supported rows or chins.

Ok…so what are the various things that you can mess up while doing rows?

Do yourself a favour and stop listening to those 2. There is absolutely no basis for making such a radical statement as “you slipped a disc” and well as for ditching barbell rows that statement speaks for itself!!

If it doesn’t settle down in a week or so get it looked at, that’s usually what i do!

I’ve had cramping and spasms in my back from doing a real high volume of back work (compared to what I was used to).

I don’t know if it’ll help, but stretching my back a little seemed to help.

Plus, maybe drinking a lot of water???

Are you sure you are not Dorian Yates twin brother. Don’t see many people doing rows with 400 pounds.

When I get to 440 pounds for 1 rep I will make a video and post it on T-Nation. Should be a month or two.

The catch is I weigh around 185 pounds.

I know…I know…bullshit. Well, I’ve been a member here for a while, and I’m not going anywhere, so we’ll see when the time for the video comes.

It’s already settled down a lot, I’ve been doing lots of stretching. I’ll see how it feels in the morning.

As for giving up barbell rows…hahahhahahahahahahahahahhahaha

Exactly!!

Especially considering the state of most peoples shoulders from too much pressing!

I wasn’t calling BS, just stating that it is an awesome amont of weight. But if it motivates you OK, BULLSHIT. I hope you feel better now and hit 440 soon.

I row 480 for 5, so maybe i’m Dorian’s cousin?

anyways, i row twice a week and never had this happen…i wouldn’t ditch them but for sure be careful…go in and start with something light, you know your body better than us and will be able to tell if something’s really wrong or not…

You could get the same shit from a chest supported row. But what do I know? I am not the one complaining about back pain from rowing.

I would like to see you do even twice your bodyweight on a row and see your form. How tall are you anyway?

185?

Emmm… no, you can’t. They’re 2 totally different movements. One is a lift whre the whole body must remain tight to support the load, and the other is basically an “isolation” exercise by comparison.

So you are doing barbell rows primarilly to work the muscles that make you “tight” or your upper back?

When you’re squatting do you need to keep your upper back arched?

I do arched back GMs for those and usually from doing my ME/DE work my lower back always held me back from really getting a good rowing workout.
