300 Routine: High Rep=Hypertrophy?

I saw some kids in the gym actually trying to do the floor wiper with 135. The best part about it was they couldn’t even move the weight off the floor, it was like a super assisted floor press with shrug.

There is a chance that some of you don’t know what you are talking about…

I believe Danny on this one, after all, he works with the guys.

And the “300 workout” was just a little contest they had, it wasn’t a routine they followed regularly.

The kid that wipes up the sweat at the basketball games.

How many fucking threads do we have to have about this goddamn movie?

Stop jerking off to the fuckin thing and go work out.

Well said.

I didnt think they were THAT big or chiseled. The biggest guy was that zombie type freak for the persians haha.

True. But, I don’t think that the point was to make the Spartans look like competitive bodybuilders. Think about it, how many MMA guys, the closest thing we have today to professional warriors (excluding military personnel who vary widely in physical stature) do you see who look hyoooge and ripped? Sherk, Freeman, Coleman and Randleman, maybe a few more. And just think what a small percentage of the MMA population they represent.

Also, unlike today’s athletes the Spartans most likely didn’t have an abundance of food, and/or supplements to sustain a huge amount of lean mass. Keep in mind that the #1 most important component in gaining and sustaining a high amount of lean mass is excess calories.

Hyper- excessive; over, above, beyond
Trophy- from the Greek meaning “to nourish”

Therefore Hypertrophy can be translated to mean an excess (abundance) of nourishment.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved seeing really big guys, like Arnie in the Conan movies, on the big screen. But, it’s just not realistic to expect to find a bunch of guys (who can actually act) that are that big. Nor is it realistic to think that you could take a group of actors who aren’t already that big and get them that big and ripped in a short period of time.

I personally liked the movie, and thought that the Spartans looked their parts. But, like some have already said. I don’t think that their physiques were that impressive in comparison to guys who train diligently for years on building their bodies.

Good training,

Sentoguy

Well apparently when I was away for the summer this Gerard Butler guy trained at the gym with Franco. Alls I gotta say is Franco knows his shit.

edit Though now that I think of it, 300 would already have been shot by then.

How adequate of an ab exercise would that be? Or is it just something fancy that’s difficult for little result?

I don’t want to seem close minded, but some people’s training is borderline esoteric…

Dang son, thats intense! I dont get how it would like a floor press with a shrug tho haha.

Yupp, just talked to Mark Twight and the “300” workout was a one-time test, a graduation exercise. Done once, by few he said. Everyday cannot be a race.

anyway - more an more trainer now go for circuit training to get in shape fast. Alwyn Cosgrove, Waterbury, Mark Twight, yes and even Stanleys EDT training. The only different here is that Waterbury is more low rep high set, while Cosgrove generally go for 10-12 reps.

I agree with them all. For fatloss, holebodyweight circuits with a strict diet = fast results. Good EPOC effect to. (building muscle period I go for TBT training).I constructed a workout on one of my untrained female clients. 6 basic exercises each session, done in circuits of 12-15 reps, with 10-15 min jumropes/sprinting after. In 4 weeks I had hear shred down 7% fat! From 27 percent fat to 21%. I have never experienced that fast results before.

The 300 workout is a cool tool to use once sparely, use the same weight as you did 4 weeks ago, and beat the clock. Tried it recently on a couple of my clients - and they were totally drained  but they liked the feeling.

So for all your T-Nation gladiators out there, construct your own circuits now before summer time. Lets make our own subject here a T-Nation forum - The 4 week gladiator cicuit training - And experience how effective this is.

I was thinking the same thing. I wipe my kitchen floor for thousands of reps no problem. This test is piss easy!

I tried the floor wiper, it’s fun. It’s always good to throw in wacky movements for a micro-cycle or two. As long as you’re not in-season or approaching a competition, it can only benefit you.
