24 Hour Fasting with Only BCAAs

I am going to start doing a 24 hour fast at least once a week and I will be pulsing with bcaas instead of MAG-10 in an attempt to save some money. I have done the MAG-10 pulse fast before however I do not know how many grams of BCAAs would be equivalent to one MAG-10 pulse. I was thinking 7.5 grams six times throughout the day?

Not a good idea, mate. Will probably lead to a depletion of essential amino acids and consequently negative cognitive effects, since they precursors for neurotransmitter.

no need for BCAAs imo,

If you have tea/coffee you will be fine, and you will NOT loose any muscle from fasting for only 24 hours given that your diet on non-fasting days is excellent

Agreed, in my experience.

Now an absence of heavy lifting, now that can def lead to ‘muscle loss’ since you’re just not giving the body much reason to keep it.

exactly, you dont have to lift on the 24 hour fast, but as long as your lifting 3-4 times/week with enough volume and intensity muscle doesnt just disappear in 1 day

Go for this instead…

That’s all nice and ‘Sciencey’ and everything, but have you tried it?

I have and I was fine. Check out the forum related to CT’s 5/2 fasting and he suggested a form what the OP is advocating - slightly different than what he outlines in his original article.

Yep, I experienced some of the negative cognitive effects with fasting and BCAA. In particular, high levels of aggressiveness/ irritability - a commonly reported effect in the literature.

Acute depletion of AA is a well documented method in the literature that you can’t simply “bro” away.

Right. And I don’t think anyone would recommend lifting on that particular day.

So you’re saying skip the BCAAs, right?

Because if it’s irritability due to fasting, that definitely shouldn’t linger indefinitely.

Another idea is to fast with what Kiefer calls the “Accelerator Shake.” It’s a shake he uses to prolong your ideal fat burning in the morning a little longer and it can also be used as a fast protocol (although i don’t know if he advocates it, a lot of people do it). The shake consists of Coffee (1-2 cups) to help control hunger (I use unsweetened Almond Milk as I don’t drink coffee), 200-400mg caffeine to help with fat burning, 10g Whey Isolate to prevent catabolism and 1g coconut milk/oil to prolong ketogenesis. That to me is the easiest most efficient method I’ve found to maximize fat loss while on a fast. I drink a shake every 3-4 hours starting at around 10 am.

Nice tip. I typically FAST with MAG-10, but that runs out way too quick.

Yep, the BCAAs make the matter worse in the context of fasting (i.e., not ingesting L-tryptophan) due to competition at the BBB.

Fair enough, cheerfully withdrawn.

I’m gonna try the Keifer coffee method for the reasons highlighted in the thread earlier - and see how I react.

Good thread, cheers chaps
