Anyone Drink Bullet Proof Coffee

Does anyone drink “Bullet Proof Coffee” or do the Intermittent Fasting with Bullet Proof coffee protocol?

I saw Alpha and another poster mention it in the log section and was curious what people thought about it.

The reason to do it are:

Reason #1: Tripling down on mTOR. wondering how this would work with Micro-Pa

mTOR sounds like it should be the name of a hero in a Japanese comic book, but it’s a little more important than that. mTOR stands for “Mammalian Target of Rapamycin.” It’s one of those things that only a biohacker (or a fat person) could get excited about. mTOR is a major mechanism that increases protein synthesis in your muscles. Both exercise and coffee raise cellular energy use while simultaneously inhibiting your muscle building mechanisms (mTOR) for a brief period, which causes it to "spring back"and build even more muscle as soon as you eat.
There are 3 known ways to raise mTOR. Intermittent fasting, exercise, and coffee (or more weakly, chocolate, green tea, turmeric, or resveratrol)

Bulletproof Fasting hits all 3 ways to compress mTOR, causing a bigger rebound and better use of your food for muscle building. I used Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting occasionally during my 4500 calorie per day no exercise long term experiment, and ended up looking like this after doing it for 4 days per week for 2 weeks. Keep in mind that I used to weigh 300lbs, and I hadn’t worked out for 18 months when this photo was taken.

Plain intermittent fasting doesn’t use coffee, so it only hits one, or possibly 2 of the 3 possible mTOR triggers. Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting works better because it can use all 3 mechanisms, but it works very well (as you can see) with just coffee and intermittent fasting. The cool thing is that an all fat breakfast (like Bulletproof Coffee) doesn’t make your body think it’s broken the fast, so you get the benefits of the fasting anyway. It’s awesome!

Reason #2: Ketosis

Plain intermittent fasting helps you enter ketosis (fat burning mode that’s good for your brain) but then you end ketosis if you eat carb-containing foods at the end of the fast. Using MCT in your Bulletproof Coffee increases the speed at which you go into ketosis, so it fuels your brain, and it helps you stay in ketosis even in the presence of some carbs in your diet. MCT is noticeably better than just grass fed butter in my coffee for this effect.

Reason #3: You’ll actually do it because you feel awesome

Let’s face it. You’re not a super athlete. You’re not a model or a professional body builder. You have work to do at your day job and being hungry, sluggish, and cranky all morning during a fast is not fun or good for your career. It’s easier, and far more pleasant to do a Bulletproof Intermittent Fast than a plain one. I’ve done plain ones and enjoy them to be honest, but they are even more enjoyable with Bulletproof Coffee. Plus, I get better results with the coffee protocols.

Reason #4: Metabolic hacking
Coffee increases your metabolism by up to 20 percent. Plain intermittent fasting doesn’t. This combination is superior.
That just about covers it. If you benefit from this Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting Protocol, please leave a comment here or on the Bulletproof Forum. The next article on Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting will show you the protocol that produced 75 pounds of weight loss in 75 days.

precision nutrition had a write up about it a while ago, the dude thought it was ok but nothing special.

I’ve done coffee with butter (sometimes with coconut oil), and green tea with coconut oil. Both are good. I’ve never used MCT oil.

There are coffees I drink and enjoy black, but if I don’t drink it fast enough or get bored with it, it’s usually a candidate for “bulletproof coffee”.

I can’t say whether it makes me feel better with the fats in it versus without, but it tastes good. I hope that’s still a good reason to drink stuff.

Hmmm interesting.

Ya, I’m curious so I ordered one of their starter kits (it’s 2 bags of coffee and MCT Oil). I’ve always just used a splash of creamer and some Stevia or Truvia.

Should be interesting to see if I feel a difference.

Cool, I’ll see if I can find it.

Interesting read. About what I’d come up with when I first looked into it too.

Just a few notes.

MCT Oil is used in pediatric populations as a food and energy source. I don’t know a whole lot about when or why; that’s pretty much about all I know.

High fats are a pretty regular occurrence in cold weather diets of various cultures, especially ones that involve needing energy for a long periods of time. Even a good amount of New World exploration and Polar exploration relied on pemmican as a food source, which is pretty much just protein and a lot of fat (usually tallow, so lots of sat fats too).

In my own experiments, Gevalia’s Traditional Roast… comes in a yellow bag at the store… is one of the better coffees to go with the butter flavor. I usually drink coffees from local roasters, but as far as store-bought coffees I enjoyed this one. I make my coffee with a french press.

You can mix it up in a blender bottle, but be careful with the heat since it can expand and explode the lid off while shaking it. I don’t have an actual blender, so I’ve made do. You need to blend it up by some means, since it doesn’t really build the proper foam nor really mix well if you don’t.

Nutritionally, I won’t comment on the specific strategy of doing it for IF or getting into ketosis, but I am a low-carb, high-fat guy and thus occasionally like to get some extra fat in my morning coffee. It took a little getting used to, but now I really like it. I’ve done it with 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp Kerrygold butter, or a little of both in 8 ounces of black coffee.

When I can make bullet proof coffee, I do. It is freaking delicious. Science be damned. It is absolutely MF’n delicious

Thanks LoRez. I have a blender so I’ll give that try. I have to find the grass fed butter, apparently it’s tough to find (at least the brand they recommend).

It honestly is. Good coffee, irish butter, MCT, a sprinkle of Saigon cinnamon. You’ll chug the whole pot

Kerrygold butter (a good quality grass-fed Irish butter) is in all of the grocery stores around here (even the less-fancy ones) and in Whole Foods all over the place. If you can’t find it in a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s near you, it’s sold online through U.S. Wellness Meats.

Buy in bulk for the discount and just put a couple of the blocks in the freezer, thawing one at a time when needed.

Thanks!

I was able to find it in a local grocery store, just not the one I typically go to.

I’m a fancy espresso drinker, but I have been using mct oil, and a few of the bulletproof concepts IF, krill oil, since January. I’m down 25lbs (50 more and I’ll be irresistible) and still getting stronger.

That’s cool to hear. I’m trying my first cup this morning without the butter (Haven’t gotten it yet).

I love my coffee and the last thing Iim going to do is ruin my morning coffee by adding butter and oil to it.
I would rather eat the butter and oil separately, and then enjoy my coffee in its normal form.

Yeah, no.

Why not?

If you want to put coconut in your coffee you should really try Malibu Rum.

Drink enough and you will REALLY feel bullet proof. Warning: Perception =/ reality.

I’ll tell you what. I’ll pick you up a sundress and a parasol and you can just sashay your pretty little self around the town square.
