1994. Best Year for Movies

For Movies that held up over the test of time… You had:

Schindlers List (released in '93, but stayed in theaters into '94
The Crow
Interview with a Vampire
Forrest Gump
Speed
The Lion King
Legends of the Fall
Pulp Fiction
True Lies
Shawshank Redemption
Dumb and Dumber
Clerks
Hoop Dreams
PCU

Not another single year, in my mind/memory, has this kind of pedigree. Does it?

Aside from the completely overrated and patronizing “Forrest Gump”, I’d say you have a winner of a list.

If I had to place them in order, I’d probably put “Shawshank” at the top.

Followed by Pulp Fiction in second!

1985:

Back to the Future
The Goonies
Brazil
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure
Rocky IV
Breakfast Club
The Color Purple
National Lampoon’s European Vacation
Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment
Porky’s Revenge
The Black Cauldron
Rambo: First Blood Part II
St. Elmo’s Fire
Teen Wolf
Vampire Hunter D

Yeah I’m gonna go with 1985

Absolutely!

Good year for sure, but I’ve always considered 1999 to be the best…

Office Space
October Sky
The Matrix
Fight Club
Austin Powers: The Spy who Shagged Me
South Park Movie
American Pie
The Sixth Sense
American Beauty
Toy Story 2
Freaks and Geeks the TV Show

…Actually after writing it out, I can’t decide which is better. Lion King, Pulp Fiction, Dumb and Dumber, and Shawshank are very high on my favorites list. Then again, so are Office Space, the Matrix, and Fight Club.

1990

Home Alone
Kindergarten Cop

/thread.

Ill go with 2005.

That was a great show! Only 18 episodes before being canceled.
Then I bought the DVD set.

1998
Blade Snipes showed how a comic book movie could be done without the camp factor

If The Program was still playing 94 I agree, release date 24 September 1993. I am sure it was at the dollar cinema. Ya’ll remember those things? Actually the same one that was open then is open now.

I echo this sentiment. Shawshank, bme

PCU (1994) vs. American Pie (1999) straight up in a death match.

PCU wins, by Jeremy Piven’s motivational speech ala Ari Gold 10 years early.

Its a shame you can buy Freaks and Geeks on DVD but The Wonder Years will never be able to release DVD because of the soundtrack issues.

I wasn’t ranking the movies, just peeling them off as I remembered them. If I were going to pick a #1, it’d have to be Pulp Fiction, followed by Shawshank.

I have to go with 1984 (yes I’m that old):

Beverly Hills Cop
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Ghostbusters
Purple Rain
The Terminator
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Killing Fields
The Gremlins
The Karate Kid

Point of this thread = there used to be more good films per annum.

  1. The Godfather pt2 and Chinatown for starters, both of which (in my opinion) are better than any movies listed thus far. Plus:

Blazing Saddles
Caged Heat
Deathwish
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Man With the Golden Gun
Airport 1975
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
The Conversation
Way of the Dragon
Murder on the Orient Express

edit:
after looking at some other years in film, I realized that 1972-1975 is by far the greatest single four-year period in filmmaking ever. I know it’s not a single year, but I think any of these years by themselves could make a claim to greatest year in film. All together though and I don’t think we’ll ever see a run like this:

1972:
The Godfather
Deliverance
Deep Throat
Last Tango in Paris
Man of LaMancha
Joe Kidd
The Candidate

1973: perhaps the best year ever in film
The Exorcist
The Sting
Enter the Dragon
Magnum Force
Live and Let Die
American Graffiti
Fist of Fury
High Plains Drifter
Mean Streets
Serpico

1975:
Jaws
Three Days of the Condor
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Taxi Driver
The Day of the Locust
The Eiger Sanction
Dog Day Afternoon
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Rollerball
Rocky Horror Picture Show

WOW, how old are you. I would have went with 1975 when Rocky came out but I seen that on TV. Murder on the Orient Express? Kinda boring film but Blazing Saddles was a CLASSIC

I wasn’t born until 1979, but great films know no boundaries and have no age limits
