I’ve got a couple of weeks off before I have to start hitting the books again, so I’ve decided to start watching some of the movies on the IMDB top 250 that I haven’t seen
I’ve seen most of the movies on this list made in the 2000’s and 1990’s, but almost nothing pre 1990 (aside for a few exceptions). What 10 movies do you guys recommend I watch first, specifically pre-1990?
Also, just watched Usual Suspects and Se7en - Loved the Latter, the former was pretty good as well.
A mate of mine has recently finished watching them all, but now has to keep checking the list as films drop in and out of the it all the time.
Of the older films that he has made me watch I think Taxi Driver and Raging Bull were pretty good, and I’m a big fan of Dustin Hoffman so The Graduate is high on my list! I think the old classics like Citizen Kane are way overated - Family Guy does a good summary of it so you don’t need to watch it!
Not pre-1990 but I love Amores Perros and City of God too!
Godfather I & II
Apocalypse now
North by Northwest
Lawrence of Arabia
Unforgiven
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid
Vertigo
Heat
Schindlers list
LA Confidential
Just a few…There are too many good movies to list them all.
Full Metal Jacket
Rain Man
Alien
Aliens
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
For A Few Dollars More
Hang Em High
A Fistful of Dollars
High Plains Drifter
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
all of Indiana Jones
all of Star Wars
Jaws
The Deer Hunter
Platoon
Scarface
The Princess Bride
The Exorcist
Rocky

That list has some odd rankings. Shawshank Redemption number one? Not sure why that would be placed over The Godfather I and II or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, for that matter. Once Upon a Time in the West is also ranked far too high, especially when The Wild Bunch isn’t even on the list.
Also, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Fight Club are both rated too high for me.

I agree where Empire Strikes Back sits in comparison to the rest though.
I’ve seen literally 230 of the 250 films here. Since you said you’d seen most of the movies from the 2000’s and 1990’s here is a list, in descending order, of my favorites on the list from before 1990.
The Godfather 1 and 2
Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange
Psycho
Chinatown
The Empire Strikes Back
Raging Bull
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Vertigo
Taxi Driver
Rear Window
The Sting
The Hustler
Dial M for Murder
Platoon
Cool Hand Luke
Apocalypse Now
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Rope
Sunset Blvd.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
Casablanca
Star Wars: A New Hope
Full Metal Jacket
North by Northwest
The Shining
Citizen Kane
Paths of Glory
2001: A Space Odyssey
Double Indemnity
Notorious
Bullitt (didn’t see it on the list, might have missed it, but it should be on it if it wasn’t)
The Manchurian Candidate
Seven Samurai
8 1/2
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Scarface
The Killing
Dog Day Afternoon
On the Waterfront
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Patton
Touch of Evil
The Maltese Falcon
Ben Hur
Rebecca
Diabolique
Anatomy of a Murder
A Streetcar Named Desire
Shadow of a Doubt
Bonnie and Clyde
Rain Man
Spartacus
12 Angry Men
The Wild Bunch
The Conversation
The Third Man
After the first 15 or so, the list’s order depends on my mood. I left a few off that pretty much everybody’s seen that you probably don’t need to be pointed towards like the Indiana Jones movies and Jaws. I’m sure there are a few that I forgot. The Lives of Others is on this list and I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s the 2006 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film (from Germany) and I would put it in my top twenty films of all time. There are a bunch of Hitchcock films in the top 250 and I recommend them all. Here is how I would rank the ones on the list.
Psycho
Vertigo
Rear Window
Dial M for Murder
Rope
North by Northwest
Notorious
The Birds (didn’t spot that one on the list but I might have missed it. At any rate, it belongs)
Shadow of a Doubt
Strangers on a Train
Rebecca
