Your New Year's Resolution?

So we all know how annoying it is that unfit people use new year’s resolutions to clutter up our beloved gyms for the first 3 weeks of January. Don’t you just hate those guys?

That said: what’s your new year’s resolution going to be? (and before someone says how stupid the concept of a new year’s resolution is, lighten up man and just play the game)

So mine has two sides.

  1. Mobility/core. I suck so badly at core work, and as a result my mobility is fucking terrible. From January, I will do a little core work every day. I’m regressing it way back to the beginning, starting with the humble plank. 3 sets of planks every day and I’ll slowly progress through the harder variations. Going to do the mobility WOD couch stretch every day, too.

  2. Cardio. I haven’t done any cardio in years. Literally years. Going to buy myself a cheap second-hand exercise bike and do a half hour on that 3x a week at first, and I’ll progress that somehow. Not sure how yet. Maybe get up to 1 hour sessions then switch to interval training? I dunno. Should probably point out that my resting heart rate is 88 bpm!

Anybody else got any goals or anything for 2015? Apart from get bigger and stronger, of course…

No resolutions here, just the same ol same ol. Try to eat right, workout, have fun, make my wife laugh and try to be a better person. Oh and to marvel/wonder at some of the threads around here!!

Enjoy the new year

mate if you’re doing all that shit then there’s nothing you need to improve anyway!

Try to get to 210 lean

Learn to flip

405 bench (really fucking close to this)

Not fitness related
Get my charity up and running, doing pretty well now but have some tags, got to smooth that out after the holidays

Ok i’ll bite, hit an 1800 raw w/ wraps total at 275. Theres nothing wrong with having a new years resolution, people just like to scoff at things and be discouraging to others who are trying to reach goals. From my experience you’ll never go wrong in loosening the stringent judgement of others, a good resolution for most people is to have a more positive attitude.

Get lean. That is it. I’m ~205, and would like to drop to ~180.

January 1st is when I start cutting.

Geez, dude, maybe take a yoga class or meditate once in a while.

‘Leaner’, as per the forum name, obviously.

But yeah, training-wise I’ve been leaning (no pun intended) more towards longer-term goals myself. Some specific measurements I’m shooting for by Jan 1 '16 (shoulder width and chest to waist ratio), and some performance targets for a few years after that (target weight for reps in a few exercises). I figure keeping those bigger pictures in sight will allow some wiggle room along the way and keeps some flexibility for experiments and whatnot without getting too far off course.

I had made some goals for this past year and ended up missing a few after getting sidetracked with unexpected issues (speedbumps both training and non-training related). I need to work a bit more on the “adapt and overcome” part of the lifestyle.

Oh, I’d also like to go the next 12 months without receiving a ‘DYEL’ callout. (Just kidding. Kinda.)

Suffered a serious medical event in July. Right before could bench press 225x27. Right now I can do 155x10 on a smith machine. Was a lean 200lbs in July, now a lean 155. Hoping to bridge that gap a bit. Would like to get back on other lifts, but my squat numbers will never be the same because I can’t go too heavy due to hernia risk.

Life: Go ass rape the SAT with a fork and get a 1550/1600 with the essay part not included.

sports: Be a beast in Track this Spring, and start half of the football games this year.

Lifting: Pull 500, overhead press 255, squat 450, bench 340, do farmer walks with 1.25 BW per hand, row 315 with a full range of motion and as much body english that is short of having epileptic sex with the barbell.

These are just some reasonable goals that with, enough dedication and determination which is driven through hatred of mediocrity, I can hit.

I am going to make a monthly DYEL call out just to mess with you now. You’ve brought this on yourself, Chris. But seriously, what are your stats, broseph…?

…DYEL?!?

I don’t have resolutions. They’re just an excuse for people to have a crack at, and 99% of the time fail, something they couldn’t be bothered to do off their own initiative.

Instead I will set myself goals and aims.

In the gym - To continue setting pb’s in the gym and get numbers I’m happy with to enter a local meet.

Personal life - my son will be born in april so give him the best possible start in life.

Work - don’t get fired.

I’m going to try and forget about numbers altogether (easier said then done).
Focus more on the muscle rather then the lift.
Try and fine tune a plan that makes me move and feel better without killing my knees and shoulders.
Make gains without worry about pointless numbers (just to nail this point lol).

Been thinking about volunteering at an animal shelter. Maybe I’ll do that.

Haha we are the complete opposite there then. It’s all about numbers for me. As long as I stay roughly around the 95kg mark in bodyweight and get stronger that’s all I’m bothered about. How I end up looking is way down the list of priorities.

This. I’ve been pigging out over the holidays. I want to see how lean I can get. Been at 198-205 for quite a while.

Me and the missus have set each others new year resolutions this year. Mine for her was to try something new every month. She hasn’t come up with mine yet.

I tried to fire this up in the Over 35 section, but I guess they all fell asleep.

I turned 40 this year, and after 2 1/2 years of training switched focuses from powerlifting to strongman. So…

My 2015 resolutions

225lb log clean and press (currently 180)
300lb atlas stone to 52inches (I’ll probably do 275 this week, I missed it last week by literally an inch)
Deadlift 500 (currently at 405, but I feel like my technique is finally dialed in and I have a lot of potential)
get under 300lbs. I came so close in 2014, but let the job and life get in the way currently 317

I’m trying to come up with some carry event goals, but I may have to hold that for an edit later.

…and get accused of steroids by a stranger.
Some fairly aggressive goals, accept weight-loss (which I know I can do if I actually try) but I think they’re all achievable, but it wont be easy.

I should probably read that “Setting Goals” article again, but this is what I’ve got in my head for now.

Main goal is gut reduction with some strength gain or at least strength preservation. Do this better than I did in 2014. I’m on what I feel is a good trajectory now. I have been weathering the holidays well, dropping an average of .5 pounds per week or so for Dec. Get back up to 1-2/week in January.

Vague lifting goals include:

At some point next year I will probably spend a month or two eating big to hit a 500 raw beltless squat and a 600 raw beltless deadlift. Give myself a break from moderation in consumption and stroke the ego a bit. I’ll be happy with any increase whatsoever in my bench and press.

Become a better bencher. I’ve already put a down payment on a day-long session with the University of Sourthern Maine’s strength coach, who happens to own the gym where Greg Panora trains and is stupid strong himself. I’m aiming to right whatever technical wrongs I’ve inflicted on myself on the big 3.

Continue having fun with lifting and self-improvement.

Maybe learn French.

-Sleep before midnight most everyday.
-Get over the fact that judo is expensive here and start training more than twice a week.
-Start deadlifting again. Get over my hatred of hex-plates.
-Start learning how to play a guitar.

Ever consider topdown deadlifts to combat the hex-plates? I’m thinking about using that movement soon in my training.
