And it has always been this way, but each new group has to learn anew for themselves.
The benefit of coming from an immigrant family is that you grow up hearing horror stories
I think they believe their protests will end in an abrupt and favorable change, so they inappropriately prioritize. But they almost never have a full understanding around the issue they’re protesting and wind up with an empty bucket, because as you mentioned they were carrying someone else’s water the whole time and manipulated emotionally to involve themselves.
Also, what about california breeds virtue signalling idiots?
You’re way off the mark…
95% of SJW are angry societal rejects that are mad at life. Let’s be realistic. None of their causes are rooted in reality only their grossly subjective nut job sensibilities.
Likely the sharp rise in the price of a Carne Asada burrito. Used to get em for like $3
Lol, and ironically charging employers $25 per hour to serve those $7 burritos will make the burritos cost $20, and they’ll be poor again.
This is a really good question to ask in my opinion.
My hot take is that California is arguably the best patch of land on the planet. Favorable geography joined forces with technology and human ingenuity enabled by capitalism in the 19th and 20th century to produce a truly remarkable society backed up by a powerhouse economy.
These conditions yielded an unprecedented level of economic and cultural output which still continues to this day.
Meanwhile progressives seized control of the political apparatus, entertaining every radical progressive policy cause under the sun.
For a period of time you could look at prosperous California and point out that this prosperity coincided with all of these wild policies.
Californians let that coincidence go to their heads, incorrectly attributing the high standard of living to the enactment of various self-congratulatory social experiments. That’s why the state seems to produce so many smug pricks.
Today, against all odds, Californians have made California a place where people are fleeing. The state is losing population even in the face of massive illegal immigration.
Don’t forget that Jim Jones - yes, THAT Jim Jones - was a wildly popular SJW in 1960s California. He was appointed head of the San Francisco Housing Authority and was a guest of the Carter White House.
California Dreamin’ looks and sounds great until the lofty rhetoric clashes with reality.
Birds of a feather would be my guess. California was once a sort of land of opportunity, then today’s dialogue took over and opportunity was lost for entitlement, and a bunch of entitled people have collected over there to seek “opportunity”.
I’d pay it… they’re sooooo good
Unless I miss my mark, you are insinuating that you suspect many male school teachers are motivated by a perverted desire to gain access to students for unsavory purposes. Frankly, this sounds like projection (or maybe you had some bad experiences growing up), but let’s discuss.
-
Poor pay with little room for growth. Not all people are motivated by increasing compensation or climbing a corporate ladder. Teacher pay in the US averages $66k. While that isn’t an easy ticket to wealth, it is generally livable and combined with having summers off can support a life that is focused around fulfillment that can’t be purchased.
-
While I have never worked as a teacher in a school, I have opportunities to teach my children, mentor younger colleagues, and work with youth at my church. It can be very personally fulfilling to simply show mastery of something and help someone else move towards that. I don’t think that is controversial and if we take into account that teachers are often not looking for fulfillment through career advancement or increasing compensation, it makes perfect sense that someone might be motivated in his career through this type of fulfillment.

Why the specific target on male school teachers? Why do you give professors a pass when they also have access to young students (even if the students are technically adults)? What about pediatricians, orthodontists, club sport coaches, or daycare workers? What about women, who also can be predators?
I’d add that by giving a pass to coaches and shop teachers but not, say, English or math teachers, you are basically saying that you think it’s okay for a man to like sports or woodworking but that if he likes English or math he’s probably a creep. Seems like a weird line to draw.
The literature is pretty robust showing that the importance non monetary factors (e.g., culture, purpose/fulfillment) are often under-appreciated
Software engineers are well paid, but a non trivial portion do the equivalent of another part time job working on open source projects basically for free just as another example
Pitching tents on campus greens is illegal, no?
Peaceful protest means that you aren’t disturbing the peace. You aren’t interfering with other people going about their daily lives, aren’t violating any laws, and aren’t causing any damage to anybody’s property or livelihood. There is this weird idea that it isn’t violence until you physically lay hands on someone. Violence exists as a threat that glues society together into compliance to a social contract. It is the natural response to violations of the social contract. Violating the social contract is not a peaceful protest. When these violations naturally lead to violence, that isn’t an escalation. It’s the downstream consequence.
UCLA is public. pitching on the plaza is legal
the student encampment wasn’t blocking anything
Are you sure? You aren’t allowed to pitch tents in most public places. City parks, for instance, generally don’t allow camping.
idk, admin allowed it for a while, so I assumed it’s legal.
They cleared it out after randos came and started attacking.
The students got pissed and did demonstrations, but again, not blocking anything. Admin decided to just make everyone else’s lives shitty
I think all sides are wrong. People just need to mind their own business
This is absolutely what I’m insinuating. You can project projection if you must.
An average of $66k puts a significant number of teachers below $66k, and no offense to anyone reading, but this isn’t high income. This is paycheck to paycheck. They can’t afford to do anything with their summers off so it’s a bit of a moot point. It’s also sidestepping the larger point that working with groups of children isn’t a natural draw for the vast majority of men, especially for the pay, which you’re moving to the pedestal.
I’m sure this can true, but churches don’t have an excellent track record for preventing sexual abuse so there’s that. There’s an unfortunate blind trust that seems to flow in to churches and you’re actually making my point for me.
I do believe most people who attend church legitimately believe in the messages taught, however, and would allow for a “coaches pass”. They’re in it for the bigger picture of advancing an internalized set of beliefs, and the fact they’re guiding children in to it is secondary. Like a coach in it for football, who must teach contractually.
This isn’t the same thing as just choosing to teach kids arbitrarily and the lofty view of personal development and advancement transferred from and “elder” to the next generation loses its luster in algebraic equations.
If you read my post, I mentioned women. You’re again trying to pull the overarching conversation in to segments to manipulate. I would absolutely lump daycare teachers and anything similar here. Orthodontists, pediatricians and whatever else you may come up with pass enough sniff tests for me to not have the same immediate suspicion as I would over a man teaching 5th grade, for the sake of teaching 5th grade.
I’m sure you’re capable of working through “one of these is not alike”.
While I would imagine some male teachers are not predators and have personal reasons for selecting their job, you won’t convince me it’s a normal path for men, and I’m not going to take them at face value, regardless of the logical hoops you present. Especially if twisting to present them.
At one time it was a predominantly male occupation.
At one time opportunity was significantly limited. And then men moved on.
I’m not trying to argue that there aren’t creeps. I’m just trying to understand why you choose to cast your aspersions on certain groups of people and not others. Why do you think a man who wants to teach kids algebra or chemistry is creepier than a man who wants to teach them football or woodworking?
