Yes I Can, My Quest for 10,000km

I feel great, exhausted but great. The tenderness of the blisters is for the most part gone. Still padded to the nines with three layers of cushion thanks to the good Dr… Did 56.4 km’s in 2 hrs 42 mins on a very deserted trail.

I tried skating with a more erect stance. The result was a feeling of being bow legged. This would account for the increased power. The bow legged condition has been correlated with exceptional pushing power. Fact I remember hearing about a high school football coach. He used to roam the halls looking for bowlegged boys to recruit for linemen. Needless to say I may use that positioning of the skates for sprinting. Otherwise I only see such a use as a problem in the making.

It looks like I may fall short of my first quota of 500 km’s in fifteen days. Just a little hiccup that should be rectified by months end. Today was the first cloudy day in a while. Makes it easier to know what I’m tasting bile for, heat or effort. Today it was effort. Five decent’s all out. I love it, leaning into the corners at 40kmh plus. Blind corners are the most fun, you just never know what you’ll find waiting for you. Mostly I’m thrilled that my dogs are getting happy again.

Things are getting back to normal. My fatigue is gone and my recovery is once again back to it’s old self, fast. The old dogs are healing really fast as well. The weather is mild again so I’m only re-tasting my smoothie on occasion. Same as yesterday 56.4 km’s 2 hrs 43 mins. I’m starting to feel myself adapt to my distance. I’m figuring sometime in October to increase the daily distance. I’ll add a lap which will give me another 7 km’s and bring me to a three hour average. This will take place only once I’m sure I have adapted the distance. Don’t want to screw up and injure myself. Better save than sorry!

Not sure how long I’ll be skating on the newer trail. Lot’s of areas shaded by hardwood trees. With our mild temperatures it will take 6-8 weeks for the trees to lose their leafs. This leaves a blanket of wet slippery leafs on some long stretches of trail. I’ll just skate the old circuit until conditions return to normal.

Laying down the thunder. I got rained out yesterday. Today I created wind. I felt awesome and full of energy. I would be going into the wind on the incline. This would give the tail wind on the home stretch. Today I decided to us the “Double Push” techneque and go for the speed. I could feel the difference instantly, and boy did I smile.

The hounds were defiantly out, 52 km’s in 1 hr 55 mins. It’s so hard to explain what that kind of speed is like. When you scream by a cyclist and get a verbal responce from them, your ego soars. Again and again, every decline was about more speed. That was over 30 mins faster than the normal skate. I really needed that. Things were starting to get me a little down, now I’m back on top and the view’s petty damn good.

Fighting the headwind. That’s what we did today. The wind was in my face on the decline. I was looking for the same speed as yesterday. It just didn’t happen, I just couldn’t beat the wind. Worked my ass off that’s for sure. My glutes and quads are very busy at the moment, recovering! I’m feeling really strong right now. Everything is working properly and I can feel it!

Did 52 km’s in 2 hrs 21 mins. It was supposed to rain, so I changed over to my rain wheels. Then of course it didn’t rain. Had to do it anyway, the forecast is calling for rain over the next two weeks. I really interested in seeing how well they work and in what conditions. Leg workout tomorrow, kind of looking forward to it. I need some more power, nothing new there!

Fate, Karma, Luck, call it what you like. It appears to work as much for us as it does against. One trip to the beach and life hits a bump. I was out being twenty with the boys. We were log jumping for ruler of the universe. I lost and messed my ankle up big time. Now that it’s pretty much healed I get the flu for the first time in years. A set back to my new profession, working with youths.

I have managed to maintain my weight training at about 75% of usual. I’m feeling really great about my progress with my shoulders. I will be doing behind the head military presses at over 100lbs by start of winter. That will open 2012 to some major possibilities, growth wise. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to view the future with such a positive outlook.

With some good fortune I hope to resume my quest shortly. Although I hate jumping hurdles. They seem to be as much apart of my life as breathing. Two secrets to success, learn to jump and never give-up, ever!
