Wrist wraps when do you start using them?

When do you start using your wrist wraps in the bench press and overhead press?

You can really use them whenever. They just give your wrists extra support during pressing movements. I’ve been using them for 5-6 years now. IMO anything you can do to protect/support your joints during training is beneficial for longevity.

Do you use them on warm ups or just when gets to 80 %?

Sometimes yes sometimes no. I think putting them on during the WU sets gets your body used to how the movement will be with them on so def doesn’t hurt.

Me personally i think 80% a good rule of thumb. Of course it depends on several factors. Like the age of the indvidual, experience and general strength level.

I wonder if wrist wraps are like other support gear. If you use them on all sets the muscles in your wrist are not receiving the work they need to strengthen themselves. For wrists I would think that 80% is still too light to be required (assuming not used for an injury). I would think above 90% would make more sense.

It might be just me, but I didn’t use wrist wraps when I did bench press competitively. I felt that I didn’t need to add any more weight to lift.

Thanks.
I only use them for overhead press at 80kg and above. My Max is 90kg.

Bench I don’t use them at all. But then I am still only benching 125kg on my comeback. As I gain strength perhaps I should use them . I have only ever benched 145 kg.

it feels more natural without them though.

I do a fair bit of dedicated wrist work. Mostly torque though. I am starting to add in wrist curls now in a more systematic way.

if I recall right, you also did a lot of wrist work

I did 225lb wrist curls off the end of the bench. Not much weight on reverse wrist curls. I can’t recall the weight.

that’s beyond impressive. did U train torque too?

I don’t know what that means, but probably not. All I did targeting wrists was wrist curls, if you don’t count reverse curls.

twisting pronation and suppination.

How did U build up with wrist curls.
I struggle with anything over the 30 kg dumbbells.
I train it one arm at a time?

I never train one arm or leg at a time doing anything. It just seemed like a waste of time.

The wrist curls that most all of us did was straddling the bench with our forearms on the bench and wrists hanging over the end. Grab the weight bar and wrist curl it up and then unwind it down extending a little out of your palm and into your fingers. I did 3 sets of 10 reps. You should be able to start with 95lbs.

Wrist wraps for pressing? In 15+ years of training I never knew this was a thing :joy: I’ve only ever used them for pulls or rows. What’s the logic here? Prevent injury from bar slipping?

They’re talking wraps, not straps. Think compression, like a knee wrap

I cannot think of a reason wrist wraps would be a benefit in pulling.

For pressing the wrist wrap stabilizes the wrist and hand to better act as a single unit. This allows less force to be lost by wrist movement when force is initiated from the shoulders and arms. The wrist and hand acts closer to a single “fused” unit with minimal “dampening” done between the wrist and hand. Also, it is less likely to injure your wrist when it is wrapped.

Yeah I was confusing them with wrist straps. My bad.

Oh jeez… got it. I guess I’m not pressing heavy enough
