Wrist and Ligament Pain! Docs?

Hey guys,

This is a post to help out my friend who has been having pain in his wrist/elbow area for awhile. I’m trying to help him figure out his problem and how he can solve it. He said this started out of the blue about 1.5 years ago from lifting. The pain right now is localized in the wrist and he has some theories as to what it may be. To make it easy to understand the situation, here it is in list form . . .

My friend’s and doctors theory:

  • Too much space in ligaments of elbow which allows nerve to snap and numb arm
  • Problem may lie in ligaments being too flexible thru the arm which may make them weak
  • MRI showed nothing wrong
  • Doctors believe he just simply has to deal with it and not lift ever in order to prevent further injury

Since this all happened, when he lifts weights his forearm kind of numbs but he deals with it and lifts. But now it’s too much to handle since this wrist pain. Now he is wearing a wrist guard but is hesitant to return to lifting after taking a week long break.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem and how my friend can overcome it? In addition, any doctors have any advice? Thanks in advance!

Your friend should be getting refered to a physiotherapist. Doctor’s dont know nearly as much as them about this kind of stuff.

Yea I told him that before so now he is going to go to someone with the speciality soon. Thanks for that though.

So maybe its refered pain from a nerve
being compressed in his brachial plexus.
MRI of wrist ok do the neck under compression.

Interesting nerve idea. I’ll let him know. But, what do you mean by neck under compression? I’m not familiar with that.

bump . . . .

Hi ,back now.
If you pick up a barbell with both hands your whole body tenses to allow you to holdit-it stabilizes from your pinky toe to your scalp.
The major pressure is ffelt across the bicep, delts, chest, traps, scalenes(which attach to ribs1&2 and C1&2).

The pressure in your friends wrists and hands could be from the compression of the brachial plexus which is intertwined with the scalenes.
Compressing the nervs going to the arm.

Ah thanks for the response! If it makes any difference, this is only affecting one wrist. Also, he told me that he did back/bi’s a few days ago with really light weights like rehab and said his wrist actually feel better now because of it. But, he will still go to a physiotherapist in the near future. Any tips on how to lift or help it recover until then?

I had that exact same problem during wrestling. And yes my doctors said the exact same thing and the MRI did not show anything wrong. It was a hard pain to deal with for a while tho but i bucked up and dealt with it and nows its not noticable anymore. I did have a week or two off in there though so I think that did a great deal.

Thanks for commenting. Yea he took 1 week off and his wrist responded well when he did light weights. But, who knows how it’ll be when he returns to heavier stuff. He tolerated it and ignored the constant numbing sensation before his wrist was in great pain. Does your forearm numb when you lift like my friend? Hopefully a physiotherapist could help.

Yea thats exactly what it was. A shitty ass numbing feeling. I used to shrug it off for the first part of my workout but by the time I was getting to the end my arm would give out on me whenever I did anything considerable. Yea I wish I would have talked to a physiotherapist now that i think about it.
