I am dumb enough to take a hit. Tough enough to deliver one. Angry enough to not give up. And… Just skilled enough that if I had the strength advantage, I could hold my own - I hope.
I’d rather fight a 280lbs untrained guy than a 180lbs BJJ guy. However, the answer does change based on your own bodyweight.
If I was 150lbs, I’d rather fight a 100lbs BJJ guy than a fit 200lbs dude. And if I’m 300lbs, I’m taking on the 350lbs untrained dude easily over the 250lbs BJJ guy.
Blue belt in BJJ, 4th in state wrestler, admittedly haven’t touched a mat in 4 years, which basically just means I know enough that I wouldn’t want to come anywhere near a BJJ black belt. Big guy who doesn’t know how to fight? I’ve got enough experience that I think I have a decent shot at winning this. Guy who knows how to fight better than me? Look, a 180lb BJJ black belt is still plenty bit to jack me up.
Though I will say, I think there is a certain point where I would change my mind. Say 100lbs less? Yeah, I’ll take the black belt. I’ve been in enough situations that I know you CAN outmuscle out of a lot of locks, and slamming an opponent has much more serious effects when your on concrete instead of padded mats
I know plenty of black and brown belts in BJJ who would get fucked up by someone strong and aggressive, regardless of size. That’s mostly due to the monetization of BJJ and the fragile egos of adults who need belts for training validation, not to mention the instructors who award them as participation trophies.
A healthy man who is legitimate BJJ purple belt, held to a high performance standard, will win the 50 lb comparison most of the time. I can’t imagine any untrained muscle man solving the problem of a legitimate BJJ black belt who is in good shape and weighs more than 200 lbs.
There are “Black Belts”, who get awarded their black belts by people who cannot whoop any meaningful ass, and then there are legitimate BJJ black belts who are total motherfuckers to tangle with.
I attended this black belt test and sparred with this guy a few times when he was still a brown belt. I can attest that this guy is a complete monster, well-equipped to take on someone with an extra 50lbs of muscle. Everyone’s got a puncher’s chance, but your window for that success isn’t very large with someone this well-trained.
I boxed for a (very) short while years back (an actual boxing gym, not a boxercise fitness studio). My first taster to a sparring session I was hit clean by some lad at least 20 lbs lighter than me, but he was so so quick… I learnt two things that night, a) speed and skill are so hard to defend against and b) I can work my range and tire the big units out.
Me too. I always had trouble finding people to spar, but the bigger guys would always agree. Anyone who’s been punched in the face will tell you, punching power is not decided by body mass alone. A lot of big guys throw slow, dumb punches.
I have no experience with ground fighting so someone who knows, BJJ I’d prefer not fight.
A fight in the streets with no gloves, ropes, refs, out-of-bounds, points, or rules. I clarified that not weapons could be used, because then the conversation gets stupid.
So my vote is for the person weighing less than me.
Frankly, I’m not worried about someone who weighs 155lbs, even if they have a lot of experience with fighting. A dude who weighs 255lbs at like 12% BF though?
Maybe I get lucky and fight someone who’s 255 but like a lot taller than me… that way they can hit be WAY before I have a chance to do anything lol. Hell, a 6’5 255lb dude is still hyooge.
Anyways, that’s why I’d vote to fight the skinny BJJ nerd
