Worst Advice You've Ever Gotten?

Sorry guys, but we should have realized this was too good to be true.

LOL! This is coming from a dude in the States!

How ironic.

WTF?

“You can’t squat that deep! You loose all your power past 90 Degrees!”
well if who ever gave you that advice is talking about a more narrow stance, there is partial truth to that, with the conventional close stance squat, down past 90 degrees the mechanical force prodcution about the kneed joint past that 90 degree point exponentially decreases, thats why you see power lifter with such a wide stance, the stance increases leverage with the glutes hamstrings and even quads to a degree

Um, this is fact… and cnn says so.

I think it’s hilarious that anyone thought this was fact.
Deserteaglle wrote:

I mostly do regular crunches supersetted with something like leg lifts, but that’s not the point.

The point is I want to hear WHY crunches are worthless. And no offense intended, but not just because someone who’s 150 lbs says they are.

Enlighten me with your understanding of functional anatomy and I’ll stop doing them. But don’t just tell me their worthless and expect me to believe you over others who can show me results from using crunches (along with a complete workout and diet).

Does it just have to do with where our bodies are at? I can see how just regular crunches at your level of fitness could be like running a mile everyday, it just gets easier and easier until you don’t break a sweat, but I outweigh you by 60 pounds and my BF% is more like 16-18.

But if that’s it then it has nothing to do with crunches not just not being “functional”, it’s just no longer enough of a challenge.
Regular crunches and situps depress your ribcage, causing rounding and tightness at the thoracic spine.

Try reverse crunches instead.

Oh, and the worst advice I’ve received in the gym was from a trainer. I was doing pistols, but having a hard time with them. The trainer saw me and said I should do leg extensions because they’re a “strength builder”.

Yeah, thanks a lot.

Yeah, but we can dream can’t we? I’m always teasing my wife that if I tasted like a cream filled donut or something, she’d be happy to swallow me. She denies this of course and says it has nothing to do with the taste. Maybe now I’ll tell her about this “Study”!

Hey, if it was posted on the internet then it has to be true!

“creatine will put water in your muscles, including your heart and will weigh you down”

I saw he had a tub of “BSN CellMass” in his car though…45 bucks for it too.

I like Arnold’s Encylopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, I don’t really take workouts from it or anything but it’s fun to pick up and read for a bit, good pictures in it too.

emancipated/emaciated

emaciated: very thin especially from disease or hunger or cold; “emaciated bony hands”; “a nightmare population of gaunt men and skeletal boys”; “eyes were haggard and cavernous”; “small pinched faces”; “kept life in his wasted frame only by grim concentration” from

Emancipated: free from traditional social restraints; “an emancipated young woman pursuing her career”; “a liberated lifestyle”
liberated
free - able to act at will; not hampered; not under compulsion or restraint; “free enterprise”; “a free port”; “a free country”; “I have an hour free”; “free will”; “free of racism”; “feel free to stay as long as you wish”; “a free choice”

 1. High reps will get you cut up.

 2. Lifting heavy will make you bulky

 3. OMG! This one is the worst.

I told this guy I’ve been primarily working on strength so I lift heavy. This guy tells me, “Oh, don’t lift heavy if you wanna get stronger. Do high reps! Lifting heavy just gets you bulky.”

 1. You take protein powder that’s why you got bigger. (They refuse to take into account what the rest of my diet is like).

 2. “Protein powder is bad for your kidneys.” This is coming from the same guy that has 3 chocolate bars and 2 frozen TV dinners a day. Let’s see who’ll be healthier in the future.

 3. Squats make you slow. Just do explosive lunges.

-Kev

Random guy: Why are you lifting so heavy?

Me: I lift heavy and fast so I get stronger and faster.

Random guy: You should develop the slow-twitch fibers first then the fast-twitch fibers later.

Ok bud. You stay working your “slow-twitch fibers” for ten years and we’ll see the difference between our physiques later on in life. Those are the kind of guys that were bigger than you and now you surpassed them.

 1. “You can turn water into muscle! Take creatine for a month so you get the water bloat. The following month, take protein powder after so it turns into muscle.”

 2. “I just do 3 sets and 10 reps for everything. I’ve been lifting for 7 years, maybe longer.”

 3. “Don’t lift heavy when you want to get ripped. Just run on the threadmill and do abs.” I saw my friend turn from an intimating guy into a scrawny shit.

While I’ve gotten plety of humorously absurd advice over the years, the advice that caused me the most hardship & injuries(because I believed it) was:

“If something hurts, do it till it doesn’t. Your body can adapt to anything.”

I understand what the guy was going for. You should always push yourself to improve, but this blanket statemnt had me ignoring injuries I needed to address ASAP.

Soooo much bad advice I don’t even know where to begin.

“All you need to do to grow is just benches and curls. None of that other shit works.” Which every wannabe lifter on campus seemingly bought into.

“Rotate your shoulders when you shrug.” Bonus funny story: When I asked the guy why, he couldn’t tell me. But when he asked why not, I told him shoulder rotation while shrugging could damage the rotator cuff. To which he replied, “No wonder I feel my right shoulder grind when I do those.”

There was also the guy who insisted dips work the “back. You know, the…back.” (he said while smoothing hands over his nonexistent lats)

Last but not least, curling advice. One guy told me that I was being “too stiff” when I curl and I needed to swing my body; otherwise, I couldn’t lift as much weight. Then there was the duo who insisted barbell curls had to be done in a power rack (when I neeeded the rack for squats). After telling - and showing - them what a true power exercise is, they won’t stop coming to me for advice.

LOL! A lot of people here are still adamant about 1 and 2 being gospel. The irony in #5 is richer than that guy’s triglyceride levels.

Listen to the big guys in the gym. They’re huge, so they know what they’re doing.

A lot of people could probably benefit by actually following that one. If someone has been training for years longer than you and has achieved that much in terms of progress, to believe you couldn’t learn anything from them at all is pretty damned retarded thinking.
