Worlds Strongest Man 2008

i didn’t think of that. the truck would’ve had a much larger area of wheel on the ground.

either way, seeing them pull a plane, a freakin plane is flat out incredible, how about those deadlifts, you could tell Marius wanted it badly, still can’t believe he pulled it out on those stones(it was raining thats why the other guy lost because he got it up and just kept spinning) great competition this year though

I caught some of the 2008 strongman action on youtube. Here’s the finale with Pudzianowski vs Poundstone.

There’s more to watch too.

Lol at Pundzianowski finishing and pushing Poundstone.

Surface area, to my understanding, isnt calculated in determining how much force is needed to overcome friction. A larger surface area would have more material in contact witht he ground, but that also means the weight is distributed better and not bearing down on a single point.

The difference is actually more about the imperceptible slope of the ground. the plane pull was tested a few days prior by Brian Shaw. The plane pull actually starts off slightly downhill tand then about midway begins to shift to a slightly uphill slope, that’s why a lot of the guys began to slow as they reached the end.

How much air is in the tires of the vehicle being pulled will also affect things, but I’m not sure if that had anythign to do with this case (plane vs truck.)

This was a great WSM. Good to see some American’s up there at the top. Really happy for Dave, he is just a class guy and has done a great job with his body type.

Haugen impressed the shit out of me. Did anyone actually pay attention to his axle clean?!?! Freaky! So fast and strong, it’s a bummer he quit.

Honestly, I was happy to see Pudz win. Sad for Poundstone, but it’s hard to root again Pudz. Not many guys could have gone on with that injury, let alone win the freaking plane pull. SICK performance.

On that note, the coal truck looked harder than hell. There were alot of guys who didn’t finish, and none of the pulls are what I would call “fast”. I think they did a great job this year upping the weights and making it harder. 2009 should be a hell of a fight, hope we get to see Misha, big Z and some other guys as well.

Monopoly

I really love how much Pudz wants it. It seemed to mean a lot to him this year.

Poundstone was very gracious in defeat, great respect for that guy. He was really unlucky not to win it. Another inch and he had te final stone.

If you meant to say that surface area isn’t a factor in friction, than you are correct. However, what I was getting at is that a plane will have a lower coefficient of friction since it is designed that way. The wheels will turn easier and creat less dynamic friction since they are designed to operate at very high speeds. The wheels on a plane are also much harder than those on a truck, which will have an effect on friction.

I didn’t know that about the course though.

duh i shoud’ve know that from physics class. dammit! lol

Replaying it on ESPN right now for those interested.

Yup. Watching it for the 3rd time I think. That stuff is great for motivation.

Tell me about it. Seeing Pudz in the truck pull was awesome.

LOL @ “best stoneloader in the world”. Has that arrogant son of a bitch met Arild Haugen?

who were they referring to?

I was ecstatic to see them raise the weight of the events this year (The squat and deadlift max went up from 750 to 800, and the last Fingal Finger was at 700!) The last atlas stone was 400, but I’m not sure if that’s an increase from last year or not.

I’m surprised that Brian Siders couldn’t get the last rep on the squat, when he’s a record holder.

Siders squatted in a suit but had the straps down and had his feet directly underneath him instead of slightly in front of him because that was the only way he could get comfortable; unfortunately, with your feet directly underneath you it basically forces you to good morning the weight up.

there will be a new champ next year, the dominator has retired

Don’t know about anyone else, but I was not that impressed with Pudz 2008 win compaired to his previous blowouts. Yes I do realize that training, and competeing at that level is very taxing on the body. Not to mention the competition keeps getting better and better. To me, something was missing…

Makes sense, thanks. Still, I hope this shows just how strong your entire body needs to be to be able to do strongman… some powerlifters/powerlifting fans don’t give them enough credit.

I’m sad to hear that Mariusz is retiring, but how can I blame him when we both know he would’ve lost this year if it wasn’t for Derek’s tiny slip. So get out while you can, brother! Take it and run. Run away from the fight. From the challenge. Go!

Actually, mariusz retiring is old news. It now appears that he WILL be competing in 2009, and many people are taking this as an indication that an earlier rumor that WSM 09 will be in Poland may in fact be true. Having a chance to perform at the highest level on your home turf would be one very big incentive to come back for another go around.
