World's Longest Bulk Cycle

Well I finally figured it was time to actually participate in the community I joined just about year ago now. I have been ever so quietly peeking into all of your e-windows and following your posted lives, so for those of you who give rats behind…err I mean ass, we can say ass here right? For those of you who care, this is a little about me…

Turned 40 in April, got an early birthday present from my wife when she walked out on me in March after 18 years of marriage…but that was not a sad day by any means. Now my days are mine, no need to clock watch or answer those “what are doing” telephone calls anymore, just me and whatever the hell I want to do…and that consists mostly of trying to keep up with my now 18 year old maniac of a son.

Seen here…(make sure to tell him to eat, he doesn’t listen to me in that department)

1 year ago this month I got back into the gym after I let myself turn into a 285 lb, size 44 pant wearing mess. Currently I am not much lighter but my pants are down to 38’s. :stuck_out_tongue: 264 last time I bothered to walk over a scale in case anyone is keeping track because I sure as hell ain’t.

Did a push/pull deal for a few months to build some strength, then turned that into a 5x5 routine. When I hit a wall that began to crush my spirit, I decided to do this 5/3/1 thingy that seemed all the rage. 2 and half months into that I did something to the nerves in my lower back that took my entire lower body out of the game for 8 weeks. What was not in pain, was completely numb. Not going to let this take me out of the game, I used this time to limp around the gym and focus on the upper half.

Well I’m not limping anymore and it’s been 3 weeks now of reestablishing squat and dead lift numbers, getting ready to take this to another level. It’s time to get a little silly…just hope I don’t end up in a wheelchair…

BTW…I’ll get some of my current best lifts up tomorrow, as I don’t have my book handy. I have no established 1 rm’s yet, but they’ll be coming in the next few weeks.

If you stuck with me this far, thanks for reading…now where’s my box of Ring Dings?

Good to see ya posting Jim. Welcome!

What are your current goals? Doing a power meet or just getting into shape?

Getting in shape by getting stronger…though I did meet a guy recently at the gym that is a fellow EFS worshiper (or fanboy depending on one’s perspective haha), currently doing 5/3/1 as well and does some power lifting meets in Vermont. So that has gotten me thinking of a new possibility for motivation.

I know I will need to incorporate some sort of diet into my life eventually, it’d be a shame to keep all this nice new muscle nestled away under layers of fat. lol

Welcome to the ‘We’re too old to give a shit about things that don’t matter’ group. Glad to see that you drank the koolaid (5/3/1). Now MJ won’t threaten to kill and eat you. Checked out the pic of your son. Not bad for just starting. Tell him there is a difference between abs and ribs…and toss some burgers down his gullet.

haha, indeed The boy worked so hard for that mid section he’s overly paranoid about losing it.

Now for those lifts I promised…

(these are all basically the best sets on the end of a 5/3/1 day that produced a new calculated max)

Squat–265x8–4/20/2010

Bench–205x15–5/12/10

Dead Lift–355x10–4/15/10

Military–140x14–3/26/10

Probably my proudest moment so far, not sure where it came from, but the music sounded good and I was on fire and it netted me:

Kroc rows–100-20x3

It will be some time before that get bested, as I did that during my downtime with my legs. Now that I am back to squatting and dead lifting the assistance work is suffering a tad. lol

I’ll post my 4 day routine later in the day, time for bed, it’s been a long night in work. -.-

Welcome Jim!

Alright! another sucker… errrr, old fart,… errrr, whatever…

jump in the water’s fine and the beer is cold!

Great to have you on the forum.

Jim, continue doing 5/3/1 or we’ll kill and eat you

Welcome to nut house.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the land of old freaks.

Welcome. Maybe we can arrange a match between your’s and Kevin’s cute little brown creature. Must be a New York thing. We’d have 'em stuffed an mounted down here  See you like some high reps on your maxs. 140x14 MPs is pretty impressive. Krocs @ a 100 for 20 is damn good, too.

Glad to have you here. Welcome aboard.

That’s a Meatwad, actually, that little brown creature is. Google “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” for an explanation, if you feel the need to abuse brain cells in a manner other than psychotropic drugs.

Bringing Kroc rows into my workout was one of the best changes I ever made. While there is no doubt they are extremely fatiguing on the muscles involved, I use them more for the mental fatigue. I have found no exercise yet that I need to sit there and talk myself into doing another set more than them. lol

As for the military’s…I think I started my 5/3/1 program a touch too low actually. On my next cycle I think I am going to raise that exercise 10 lbs instead of the normal 5 lb interval.

…and as for little brown furry things, this is the guy who keeps me safe at night. :stuck_out_tongue:

Holy shit. If my 8 year old daughter and wife saw that pic they would be tag teaming me to get a widdle doggie

Did a few sets of dead lifts today and didn’t need a wheel chair to get to my truck. I guess the back is ok.

Also after talking with a guy at the gym, I discovered I need a new belt. Currently using a cheapo Harbinger, he let me toss on his APT belt…wow, I guess you do get what you pay for. So much more support.

Well this is how I abused myself today, had to cut off a couple assisance exercises,as I needed to get my son to the doctor to get stiches removed from his foot.

335-5x3
355-5x2
315-5x1
