Workout vs. Training?

I’ve been doing the Spinal Tap version of 5-3-1 as outlined in Beyond 5-3-1. My accessory work is kept to 1-3 things top to keep each lift under 70 min or so. For accessories, I’ve followed the outline Jim gives on his website as for what muscle groups to target on certain lift days.

So my question is how do you really know the difference between working out and training?

One other question to ensure I am reading this right. For the Spinal Tap. It states that it is designed to use the 6 week template with the difference being that your TM is upped by 5 & 10 respectively after every lift and not at the end of 3 weeks? Also, the deload isn’t done until after the 6th week?

Thanks for the help… still learning this program and wanna make sure I’m following it to a T.

You are training if you have an actual performance/physique goal, you are “working out” if you are just there to work up a lather and go through the motions. Only person who can really know the difference is you.

Like the poster said above, you’re training if you have long term goals (i.e. strength progression) in mind. You probably would write every single workout down, week to week too.

Check out Rip’s article on Xfit (here on T-Nation) for an awesome definition of training and working out.
