Workout Volume Calculator

I know it sounds lazy, but does anyone know of a website, or any software that would calculate one’s total volume?

It would need to recognize sets, reps, and weight, and (I know, I’m pushing it with this one) which muscle gets worked by which exercise.

It would be nice when changing around your workout and trying to get around the same total volume as what you were doing before, or to make sure you’re continuing to improve.

And by total volume, I mean weightXsetsXreps.

I don’t know how you could put density, or time between sets, into the equation.

Excel spreadsheet…

Agree, just use an excel spreadsheet. All you would need is 5 columns. 1 for the exercise, 1 for the weight, 1 for the sets and 1 for the reps. The fifth column would be the total volume (weight x sets x reps). Easy.

Yea, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.

It sounds easy enough, but I don’t play with excell too often.

Maybe I can even incorporate it into a workout log and not have to upload my numbers twice.

at the bottom of the page is a sample template for those following a 5X5 regimen. i’ve found it helpful regardless of program though. might be worth a shot to mess around with it. hope it helps!

Okay, it’s a little more complicated since I’m looking for each total volume for each body part (or at least primary body part when using compound movements).

I can do it for each exercise, then I’d have to look at each one, see which ones to add up for each body part (which isn’t too bad), but I was also thinking of giving each exercise another column that shows what body part it’s for, then make Excel add up all of the total volumes for each body part.

I’m working on that now, but I don’t know if I can do it yet or not.

Thanks.
I’m looking at the excel spreadsheet now. Is there any way to see what the rules are for a particular box so I’d know how they made Excel add, or do whatever it’s doing in the spreadsheet?

I mean, if I like the way he made a chart, and clicked on one of the boxes, where would I look to see all of the rules that apply to that particular box?

I’m still not sure where to apply certain properties to a particular box yet, but I figured I could just look around and find out.

it shouldn’t be too complicated but then again, i get flustered opening cd and dvd wrappers. you can enter your poundages and reps and all that good stuff, then in the cell you’d like to see the total, you can use: =A1+B1 enter, etc. and the totals will be added for ya. same goes with =A5-D7 enter and it’d subtract. and multiplication is , so =A1B1 enter and it’d multiply for ya. i hope i didn’t insult your intelligence, but those are the basic functions i used in various classes.

i forgot to add that if you just highlight the rows or columns, then copy and paste the formula, it will automatically configure the entire row, column, etc. just so you don’t have to manually enter every single one.

LOL, thanks. I JUST figured out how to add, and my wife JUST helped me figure out how to copy and past a function into other boxes in the same column.

And no, you didn’t insult my intelligence at all. I appreciate it, and that’s exactly what I needed. I just happened to get my wife to explain it to me just before I saw your post.

Now I have another problem.

My columns look like this (dots are just used for spacing):
C…|.D…|.E…|.F
weight | sets | reps | total volume

I made column “F” to equal CDE to get total volume.

That’s fine, but my reps won’t always be the same number for each set.

I might have 225 for the weight, 3 sets and the reps were 8, 8, 7. Well, that’s not 225 with 3 sets of 8 (which would fit easily in the calculator).

I tried putting a comma or parenthesis in the reps box, but it didn’t work. The reps all have to be the same for all sets.

perhaps you could have c/d/e/f columns like you said, but have a e1,e2, and e3 column. e1 8 reps, e2 8 reps, e3, 7 reps. then in f, use =e1e2e3, this will give you your total volume regardless of reps achieved. your table will be bigger, but the spreadsheet is endless so space isn’t an issue. good luck sir!

I just thought of using a colum for each set.
Set 1| Set2|…

Then just multiply the weight column, by the total of each of the set colums added together.
Now my “total volume” column looks like this:
=C2*(D2+E2+F2+G2+H2+I2)
That gives me the ability to fill in up to 6 sets with different numbers, and have them all multiplied by the weight used.

Edit: I tried thinking I could use 2 columns for different weights, but that wouldn’t have worked. The function would have to have a lot of rules to make it work because the both weights would be used for every set, instead of the first weight for a few sets, then the second weight for the rest of the sets.

Ha! We’re thinking the same thing at just about the same time.

Thanks. I didn’t see this post before making my other post, I swear.

just takes some practice is all. by midnight, you’ll be teaching excel classes down at your local college!

You can actually make one pretty elaborate with Excel, if you want to spend the time.

You could even put a graph to see the progress.

Here is a link to a basic one I made in Microsoft Access after reading this thread.

Go to the Add/Edit Exercises menu and populate it with exercises you wish to have in your records then go to the Add/Edit Exercises Completed menu and add in your exercises… well completed. The muscle/muscle group field will automatically populate if you filled it in in the previous menu.

There is also a basic report that will show between two dates. Try to put in a date a day before and after the ones you want. An example for the date format is 12/12/2006.
