Working Stock At a Department Store

I am starting to fill out job applications and waiting for the jobs to call. Specifically Target since they need a lot more help since the remodeling. Does anybody have any experience in working in a stock room? If so did it interfere with your weight training? I thought there was a post similar to this but couldn’t find it in the search function.

I worked clothing retail for over 8 years, and spent some time in the warehouse (about a year, the rest of my experience was on the sales floor).

It didn’t interfere with my training, and I ended up losing weight and sweating a lot of it off. Since I needed to lose weight, it worked good for me. The stockroom hours were usually early, like 6a-2p, so it allowed me to train in the late afternoon at the gym before it got really busy. I made some decent progress.

If you are trying to put on weight though, it could be an issue, because you burn so many calories during the day, then have to eat 4-5K a day to maintain.

Regardless, as long as you train, no matter what time of day, is what matters, and if you’re trying to lose weight, the stockroom job should help you with that.

I don’t really want to lose weight. Would you say that you lost a little muscle mass or was it fat loss? So is stockroom something like lifting a lot of boxes transporting them? If I don’t like it(assuming I get the job) the application said that I could possibly negotiate for different positiions.

I mainly lost fat, but then again, my diet and exercise weren’t spectacular, so anything helped.

Yes, stockroom is mainly unloading trucks, unloading pallets, moving boxes, shelves, fixtures, merchandise, etc. So basically, a stockroom position means that you will be moving stuff around all day, usually heavy stuff. Wear a back brace, they should provide one for you.

If you want to negotiate for different positions, that’s fine, just remember than most other positions on the sales floor will not pay as well as the position in the stockroom, and your hours will be much different than in the stockroom, and can have you working late nights, followed by early mornings, whereas in the stockroom, you basically work the same shift every day.

I worked stock, didn’t interfere with my weight lifting at all.

I eventually just put my iPod in my ears, stocked shelves and chilled.

I worked nights so I didn’t really have to deal with anyone, at all. I got to take frequent breaks (to eat).

All and all not a bad job, just mindnumbingly boring.

A post asking about working in a department store and NO mention of theft strategy? What’s this world coming to?

i do stock at Petsmart, i used to work close to full time during the summer which was crazy because i was doing MMA & weight training so i had practically no free time.

now i only work weekends and its not bad because those are my rest days. whenever i had to eat i would just go to the breakroom and eat but now i just keep a gallon of milk with me at all times so no one can bitch. its possible to lift, but its hard b/c of the crazy scheduling if you do it full-time.

I would only do it part time because I’m still in school and can work late on fridays and saturdays. But my concern was wether it would interfere with my weight training any.

I worked at Home Depot for a 1 and a 1/2 years and I don’t think it interfered with my training at all.
Just slam a protein shake on your breaks.

the way i see it is depending on how high you prioritize things determines whether or not youll be able to do them whether you have a busy schedule or not. if you work 30 hours a week, go to school, and want to lift weights and still maintain any social life whatsoever well then youre going to need to prioritize.

so youll need to either cut back work hours, studying, liftin, or friends. your situation of working 2 days a week (which is what i do) doesnt seem like its threatening at all to your lifting regiment. just go to work man cause supplements, food and gym memberships cost money which is where 90% of my paycheck goes lol.

So do you make good money workingg only 2 days. What’s your hourly wage? I’m thinking of maybe 3-4 days a week to make good money for buying school clothes along with food and supplements.
