At 180 pounds 5/3/1 shouldn’t make you lose size, unless you fuck it up somehow (commonly caused by not doing the program as written). In fact, I’d say the opposite is much more likely. You shouldn’t need a deload if you take 90% of your maxes as instructed, but that’s up to you really.[/quote]
Odd how you tell him to do the program as written and then move on to tell him not to do the program as written.

Well… I didn’t really tell him to do or not to do anything. I said I can’t see any obvious problem with swapping squat and deadlift days; can you?
You’re right though, I did contradict myself a little.

Sure, deadlift is going to leave his CNS much more taxed, earlier in the week than a squat day.

Umm… but by swapping them he’s putting deadlifts at the end of the week, isn’t he?

Indeed he is. Meaning he gets some solid work on squats/ohp/bench and by the end of the week, just like the end of the meet he’s a bit taxed for the deadlift.
I switched from a bodybuilding workout to powerlifting about 8 months ago. I have gained size and strength, especially in the lower body…so much so, I threaten the wife with a contest diet. She straightens right up!

I was talking about how you tell him that he won’t need a deload. If you get to the point that you NEED a deload, you have already set yourself back IMO. Beginners can obviously get away with this more than intermediates and advanced guys, but why rush it? Enjoy the ride…Wendler would agree
As far as the order, it doesn’t really matter. I usually do a Mon-Tue-Thu-Fri routine and put whatever lift I am emphasizing for a few cycles on Monday such that I have a full two days rest before starting it (plus OHP is usually Friday so since its an easy day, its almost a full 3 days of recovery). I’ve pretty much swapped Squats or DL’s as needed for Monday, Bench Tuesdays, other lower body Thursday, OHP Friday…I’ve been happy with this setup.
Also did the Sun-Mon-Wed-Fri setup but didn’t like that as much as it didn’t allow me to move missed workouts around when life got in the way. If you had to shift a workout to the weekend, you would be working out Sat-Sun-Mon…I don’t really like to do that. My first template gives more flexibility in that regard.

Thank you…do you think this guy worry’s about losing his hypertrophy while getting strong?

Sorry I am late.
OP - yes, you will get super small, as we all know, lifting big weight makes you tiny as shit.

Oh, sorry man. I meant a deload might not be necessary before beginning the program. Due to working with 90% of your max, the first cycle is generally the easiest. I absolutely agree with taking a deload every 4th week.
I usually go Sun-Mon-Thu-Sat, which allows me to get better sessions on the weekend when the gym is less crowded. If I were to train during the week I’d use your first routine and also put what I wanted to emphasise on the Monday. Pretty straightforward really. I won’t really tell the OP what to do in this regard because he knows his schedule better than I do. If he reads the book I’m sure he’ll be able to figure it out.
Ive been training pretty dam hard the last 12 months so i think i’ll keep the deload week. I’m prob due for one anyway.
