I have people ask me in the gym-this happens all the time…often from the same people- “how do you get the motivation to do squats/deadlifts/cleans”. I know exactly why I do what I do in the gym, but haven’t put it into words so people saying “WTF does this kid think he’s doing” can understand. I lift with the dismal hope that I’ll become more athletic.
With this new found athleticism secret doors would open and I’d do things so phenomenal that the sky would part, champagne would fall from the heavens, and inebriated women would throw themselves at me by the dozens.
I willingly acknowledge that I’m 23 and whatever athletic abilities I might develop ultimately are useless since all the windows for participation have passed, but that goes in the “read when impotent, shriveled, old and painfully arthritic” file.

That’s a pretty fucking (dismal) defeatist attitude isn’t?
^^^ MAJOR ditto on the WTF is with the dismal crap.
Dude. 23. You have DECADES of participation ahead of you.
Maybe your NCAA scholarship isn’t too likely, but hell, my parents picked up sea kayaking when they were hitting 60, and did several of the sea crossing between the various Queen Charlotte islands when they were around 62-64.
Life is a marathon, not a sprint. If you start writing off your athletic participation possibilities when you are 23, then you are almost programming your mind to be the exact sort of person you say you’re trying to avoid becoming.

I’m 42 and started seriously lifting at 35. When you’re my age, go look on Facebook at you’re friends from highschool and you’ll get a healthy dose of “here’s why I lift”.

I am 37 this year. I know exactly what you mean. I see lots of beer guys and skinny arms. I never want to look like that.

I started at 42 and have done 15 meets since then. I’m pretty sure that’s competitive.

Dirtman, why the change in name?

My other account doesn’t work. I have no idea as to why. So I made this one.

That’s odd. Maybe you were part of the t-n clean sweep program. Were you stirring up trouble?

I dunno … I dunno what I did or if it was an error or what happen. I was not involved with anyone that is for sure.
Maybe it was cause I posted a lot in SAMA or said some vulgar things. I have no idea. I just tried post one day and my account didn’t work. I can’t do anything with it.

Yeah…we’ve had a few guys under 25 getting all deep and shit. What’s up with that???
There’s a five minute window after jacking off where under 25 year old guys think about things other than pussy and mortal combat.
That’s when they get all deep and shit with their brain thing-ies.
It’s funny you say that. I have found myself so jaded (I think primarily from reading on this site) that when I meet some guy under the age of 30 that seems to have his shit together, I’m genuinely stunned.

I lift for the feeling of superiority that it gives me. Knowing Im bigger and stronger than just about anyone alive. Knowing i’m the envy of every male living.
