Why Don't You Push Harder?

I understand that not everyone wants to get huge, and I know that doing so requires a lot of time in the gym and in the kitchen which most people don’t want to put in, and that’s fine. What I don’t understand is why someone would go to the gym 5-6 times a week and not try to make an improvement at SOMETHING at least to make it a slight bit interesting.

I can’t imagine going to the gym as someone who only maintains as being any more fun than doing my laundry or washing dishes, just something that has to get done. I think everyone would get more out of their gym experience if they at least had some sort of goal to strive for, however modest that goal might be.
Solid post.

But the thing is, there are people who do look at the gym as something as just necessary to maintain weight and be healthy in the same way that eating healthy isn’t always as tasty as indulging in McDonald’s or Haagen Dazs, or that hygiene (dental visits, showering, laundry as you said), or errands (car wash, food shopping) aren’t fun. They get in the gym and they get out.

I personally love being active, in the gym and out, even if it’s just working out to maintain fitness and health.

Still with the e-tough guy bullshit huh brick? The “meet me in real life, BUCK 50” bullshit huh?

Bonez is right, you are pathetic.

No, my trip is in Feb. And I’ll be spending my time with people with integrity thank you very much.

You aren’t worth the air you breath, let alone my time.

Well, I wouldn’t go treading into what other people do for a living. Prof x is a dentist for example, a dentist that WANTS to get as big as he can. That’s the take home point, the CEO in brick’s post didn’t want to get big. The rest of your points i agree with, this thread is for people actively striving to get bigger. It’s also for the obstacles people run into/ ways to make time for it, etc.
I posted what I did knowing this is a bodybuilding forum! The thing is the guy I was responding to was talking about his interactions with people who are just regular gym goers (eg, 39 yr old lady who wants to MAINTAIN her figure and guy who doesn’t give a shit either way) and how he can’t understand why they don’t give a shit as much as he does about gym and muscle matters.

Did you read his and my post carefully?

If someone wants to get fucking huge, then they better be in this for the long haul and go to great measures to get to huge!

And yes, there are CEOs who are jacked. Uh, Dave Tate comes to mind! So does Dave Palumbo of Species Nutrition. Both are very successful in what they do and are friggin’ jacked!

Rick Collins, former T-Nation contributor and hot shot lawyer and author, who I met this past fall at the Hofstra Steroid Conference is bigger than 99.9% of people on here.

I thank you for my compliment on my post, but it wasn’t a “rant”. I don’t really appreciate it when people express their disdain for people who simply want to be in shape and maintain their health and physique. According to that line of reasoning, people who exercise 5 to 6 times per week but isn’t looking to be jacked or run marathons are “not understandable”.

It’s understood that if you wanna look friggin’ huge, you gotta do some grueling shit.

It’s also understood that people who want to be healthy and athletic and look decent nude aren’t average doofuses.
I don’t know who your replying to, i mentioned to not tread on other peoples professions. Which means, don’t go around thinking that CEO’s and the such don’t strive to be/already are huge. That’s why i put up the professor x example.

I don’t have any hard feelings towards people wanting to be healthy or in shape.

But whatever, you win…this is the internet and people can derail threads by mentioning things that aren’t exactly on topic (you know, the topic is about striving to get huge) because everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I’m just going to keep reading and hope to get some more useful information/motivation from this thread.
I didn’t post what I did to argue with you or “win”. I like your posts on this site and you seem like a good guy.
Truth is, you have some “pull” on this site. Meaning people tend to take in what you write.

I know, I know, it’s just an internet site but…if you start writing things off topic then there will be people reading your response, which in turn makes them more comfortable to write their off topic opinion too.

That eagertolearn guy a few posts up is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t carelessly write things like you did. He agreed to your point and provided his own point, which was even more off topic than yours. Good posts/stories, but in the wrong thread.

Anyways, Ive already posted more in this thread than some of the guys 3x my size have. So, im gonna stop cluttering it up.
Alright, fair points man.

And thanks.

Question for guys or girls that never plan on competing

Why don’t you push huder? Couldnt that be a question a guy who has built size and cut to contest shape ask you? Are you not the pussy in comparison to that guy? You make excuses much like the rest of the gym goers you hate so much, right?

Dont wanna wear a thong on a stahe
I love ice cream too much
Numbers are too complicated
Dont wanna lose what I’ve built
Dont have the time for cardio
I’m a bodybuilder whether or not I step on stage
I dont get paid for it
Too strict
endless additions

You guys love applying the term bodybuilder to yourselves with no record of competition. Then there’s the “this is a bodybuilding” forum" thing, even though there are very few bodybuilders here…?

Its great that you all have persevered through all the pain to build it. I commend and respect the hell out of all of you…mainly becaise I’ve done the same…but if you never intend on running the long diet and the other things that come with prepping ten how can you say you are not half assing too?

No disrepect intended so unclench your teeth right now.
Why do you hang around a weight lifting site and refuse to show any sort of evidence that you actually lift fucking weights?

No disrespect

Also, look at Stu. Dude was a gym rat for ever. Ask him what his plans were when he was 22… Look at him now.

Pics or GTFO

Life happens to us all, shit it happens to me often. I just had knee surgery in Sept. To continue the thoughts of others here, most people do not have what it takes to keep pushing and they make excuses for it. I never plan on competing, but I will never stop training. I have been working out for years off and on. I AM the reason why I have not made the most progress I could have. Most people cannot look at themselves and take responsibility for their actions.

I am not giving up… IMO, a lot of people here are looking for the HOLY GRAIL, that perfect workout template and the perfect supplement, so they do not have to put in yrs of trying and failing. That is what this games about, trying, failing trying and succeeding. It has taken me a long time to realize that myself. I train for myself not what a template says, but I also listen and take notes and keep an open mind to new ways of training. Either you have it or you don’t, you either want better for yourself or not. One other thing that I have learned is to except those people for what they are, they are not me.

I’m only on page 2, but the post by “overstand” has forced me to reply before reading this whole thing.

Wow, Professor X is fat as fuck, and no one here would want to look like him?- wow. Is this guy fucking stupid? High? Both? The few years that I’ve been hanging around here I have seen him go from “pretty fucking big” to “holy shit that guy’s fucking huge”. I’m secure enough in myself, and realize it doesn’t matter shit-all to Professor X if I compliment his size or call him a fat fuck- the reality is just that he is a big, muscular motherfucker. Anyone that looks at him and sees a person that is fat as fuck is dumber than a stick, and doesn’t know shit about muscles, to the point of not knowing what they look like.

Having said that- I don’t have any good fucking reasons why I don’t push harder, I just don’t. I could say that I don’t have the time or money to put into nutrition the way I should to see consistent and real gains, but I know that people have overcome worse situations than I have with time and money, and still gotten jacked, so those excuses are out the window.

So, I just don’t know. I attack the gym pretty good most times, and I’ve made some good strength gains, but the nutrition isn’t there just yet. I guess when it comes down to it, it’s just being lazy- don’t have a better answer than that. My ultimate goal is to be about 230lb (5’9") and 10-12% bodyfat- nothing earth shattering. I’ll get there, I know I will, but I’ve got a ways to go. I know the answer for me is nutrition, just a matter of discipline and eating more.

Professor X-

I think this thread was a good idea. Kind of points out to me all the bullshit excuses and everything that we come up with to try and justify ourselves- but what’s the point? Justifying our excuses (to ourselves) on a personal endeavor/journey is just fucking stupid. I will try to work harder. The goal I’m focused on right now is a 600lb deadlift at 200lbs, when I achieve that (hopefully in next 6 months), I will make that 230 bodyweight my focus.

Thanks for what was, for me, a quick wake up call.

Good for you and them. Too bad none of that is bodybuilding and does nothing but bring the rest of this forum down. No one cares that you don’t have any goals other than to treat the gym like a trip to Mc Donald’s.

Why the fuck do you feel the need to tell us how NON-interested you are at all times?

I appreciate that. From many of the responses, it wouldn’t matter if I was dieted down already because many here would simply find something else to hate on or bitch about.

A 3 week old child
Pain in my right elbow
A rather average gym
A job that means my hours are not set in stone

These may hinder progress, but won’t stop me pushing as hard as I can.

Good post. I was in a car accident last October and as a result, suffered a hairline fracture in my arm, fucked up my knees even more (my first real day training legs was last week and I still am not doing the weight I was before), and basically have a limp because of the pain in that area that may or may not go away completely…and I still trained hard and am cleaning up my diet now.

You make some very large WRONG assumptions. There are at least 4 different chiropractors here who are regular posters that I know of, possible 6 or more lawyers, and I am a DDS specializing in oral surgery.

Why would you assume that people who want big muscles are incapable of success in other careers that require greater mental faculties?

Don’t you see the huge problem with that line of reasoning?

lol at this guy thinking 5’9, 230lbs @ 10% is ‘nothing earth shattering’

lemme know when you hit that

Ingredients: One bodybuilding thread

Add Professor X

Stand back and observe from a safe distance.

And for the record I got a ‘what have you been eating’ last Monday from my dad who I haven’t seen for a few months, but he only ever plays tennis and runs on the treadmill, so a long way yet

Have heard the “what have you been eating” two times by a big noticable guy and a coach. I’ll visit this coach coming month, wondering what she has to say, haven’t seen her a couple of months.

Why don’t I push harder? Still learning how to balance out my time and priorities. As it still is an ongoing process, it will get more efficient. As such my results are getting better with time.

Depends on the injury. It’s reasonable to believe an injury could set you back or at least stall progress for a year.

not to mention the handfuls and handfuls of people pursuing advanced degrees. apparently, chasing the swole means working at k-mart (does k-mart still exist?).
