Why Bench Press?

my strength in db incline outshines my incline bb strength something silly. i dunno what it is but i just cant seem to bench decent weight at all, but i can incline db the 110 for reps with no spotter. throw 220 on the incline bb and i’ll really struggle. So as everyone else has said in this thread, i’d say its very much on an individual basis.

I call bullshit on the depth of your db press. Are the sides of the DBs coming low enough to touch your pecs?
ha ok. i dont own a video camera but i’ll see what i can do. i go low enough so the db’s lightly touch the top of my chest, but i don’t bounce them or anything. are 120’s really that impressive? can most people who bench the 120 db’s bench 315?
Knowing how much I busted my balls to hit the 110’s for an ugly triple, I tend to agree with everyone else. Pics or it didn’t happen man.
Really? I weigh 177, and this was my latest DB press workout

DB Press
110 x 5
115 x 5
120 x 5
125 x 8

My best bb bench over the last few months was 255 x 10 or 275 x 6.

I’ll be the douche who videos myself for proof if I get instant T-Cell Alpha membership or bottle of Metabolic Drive lol

Anyway, I agree that dumbbell press is better, with less shoulder stress. I can db press on a day when I’m sore enough that bench is painful. However, I’ve also noticed that once you get above 90lbs or so dbs, its such a pain in the ass to get them there, you lose half your energy setting up for it. I always get bruises on my wrists where the weight hits when I swing the dumbbell onto my thigh (standing, of course). So its nice to just lift the weight off the j-hook and press it, as with a bench press.

One of the biggest and stongest dudes on this board video’s every training session. I learned a valuable lesson from him.

I know a few other swole ass fuckers that video themselves too.

Here I am hitting the 105’s… So no, unlike some, I’m not all talk.

Meh probably just a naturally strong dude… doesn’ sound likes he’s boasting or anything. =)
I hope he can… But to hit the 120’s in a year is big deal.

I notice no one questions Bonez or Way when they agree with me…

Yeah, its not like he is bragging about it, I dont see the problem.
I never said there’s a problem. I just want to see it. I like watching people move big weights. This is the internet. Words are worthless.

I guess im gonna have to video myself then, I usually work out alone, so Ill just set my phone on a unused bench…awesome job beans, 105s aint nothing to sneeze at!

THE BENCH PRESS IS SPECIAL

WOW thats crazy, on a good day I can pushup 125 DB on a incline for 6-7 reps tops. My top Bench has been 365 lately, go figure.

Thanks man, I owe at least 15 of those lbs to Austin.

Judging by your pictures you could bench a house dude.

What I was saying is, that from my experience, his numbers seem to be justifiable when compared to each other (DB vs. BB), so there is no “mathematical” reason to not believe him.

Your post appeared to be condescending and doubtful when he claimed those numbers, insinuating that there was a problem with his claims. Sorry if that is not what you ment and I took it the wrong way.

However, there is a plethora of internet tough guys on this board, and I just cant see the point in asking for videos from someone to prove themselves to you. If it was some crazy ass weight, then I could understand. But we are talking about benching 120 lb DB, come on.

Some people are just better at DB press than other, I guess.
I have a wingspan of 6ft 6, although this does not make much sense, I can bench 275 X 6 on bench, but I struggle with 100’s on DB press. A friend who has 5ft 8 wing span eases his way through 110 X 6 on DB press ,with DBs touching his chest, where he probably can’t bench more than 275, although he does both of these movements frequently.

I just want to see a video of the lift. Its not a big deal.

Why do you think I care about your opinion on what my reason for wanting to see it is? I didnt say anything condescending. Youre too sensitive if you see fight words in a simple video request. Where I’m from people say the word “bullshit” in mundane conversation. Cursing doesnt mean Im mad or whatever.

He’s not proving himself to me only as I didnt ask for a video to be emailed. I asked it to be posted for everyone to see. Solely for the reason of having a video of 120lb DB press in a thread about benching.

You can post a vid of your 120lb DB press too, if you feel left out or something.

Before this got off track, I had some advice to put in. Now, it seems like it will get overlooked and is a waste of time, but here’s my two cents anyway.

Bodybuilding is not a sport specifically to push big weights, eventually you get there, but its all about lifting for the pump and getting your muscles to grow by activating the most muscle fibers possible. For some, this is achieved through bench press, however, for most it is not. One of the biggest aspects of bodybuilding is to find what works for YOUR body, bench might be the best damn thing since sliced bread for your pecs, but for me it isn’t. Don’t take the OPINION of others and treat it like the fucking bible, get your ass in the gym and find out for yourself. Try bench pressing for a 6 months and if you don’t see any growth switch to DB’s. Try them for 6 months and if you see more growth out of DB’s stick with those.

Don’t, however, throw out the bench completely. It is great for activating different muscle fibers that you can’t with DB’s. Find out what works for you and quit wasting your time asking those types of questions on here. You can’t gain muscle or experience through the internet, you can get ideas suggestions, but its up to you to find out if you should implement them into your workout or not. Get to know you’re body, he’s your friend.

Bonez -

I was only explaining where I was coming from, and stated “sorry if I took it the wrong way”.

Second - You arent asking him because you want to see him press 120 lb DB’s, you are asking him to call “bullshit”. 120 lb DB is not impressive (good, but not holy fucking shit good), so your excuse of “I like watching people move big weights” is, in your terms, bullshit.

You asked for the vids, therefore you are asking to validate his claims, thus you are asking him to prove it to you (and others who can see it, but you asked).

You came out with a “seemingly” typical tough guy attitude, I called you out on it, and you are back tracking now.

Just stating my opinion, to each his own. Why do you even give a shit whether he can do it or not? Does it make you feel like less of a man? Or would it make you feel better if he couldnt prove it?

Obviously I dont believe him. Not becuase I want to look tough. Because I dont believe most of the shit posted on here. Is that really so hard to understand?

I called out the depth of the DB press. Because someone pressing 120’s should be pressing well over 300lbs with a barbell, IMO. Something is off, most people can see that.

Are you done hijacking the thread trying to start an argument?

Is it really that unreasonable to ask for people to back up their claims?
Why does someone asking for proof bother you so much?

When it is someone you dont even know, will probably never see, and its over the internet, yes, it is ridiculous.

My only point: Who gives a shit? Really?

Done hijacking.

As long as I stop short of full lockout on every rep, I always feel benching in my pecs.
