hehe I got a post deleted from that board… all I said was: “being fat isn’t ok, being super skinny isn’t ok, aim for balance” then some other bs and no where was I insulting (honestly). Then the poster named “Jen” jumped all over me calling me a “moron” meanwhile I didn’t insult her back (not like I give a damn). Man I could have so much fun (evil fun) with this board… like posting “someone needs a cookie” to when they have a cat fight… but I ain’t about dat… peace
LMFAO dude. That’s some funny shit. “…sucking like a hoover”, fuck I’m spill my protein drink. Keep that shit coming man.
I moved to the states in my middle teens from Scotland. Scottish people have about the worst diets of anyone ( or so it has been reported) There are fat people in Scotland ( see fat bastard) but not as many as here. There were no drive throughs when I lived there, and very few fast food places. Lots of fish and chip shops but at least you had to walk to them. We were very active and I was a healthy kid, we played soccer after school everyday and rode bikes all the time. Even though it is a very cold climate we were outside and active. When I moved to the states, I got very fat and was fat for around 10 years until I got off my lazy ass and into the gym to do something about it. I have large people in my family thus have the genetics to be a larger person so I do not buy the genetics argument, genetics may make it harder for some people but so what, they just need to work harder. Laziness is built into our society and if people do not make a decision to compensate then they will most likely get fat, simple as that. Our lives have become easier and more convenient due to technology, city planning etc. That’s great but the trade off is your health if you do not spend at least a small amount of time paying attention to it.
Everyone has brought up the argument of genetics. Most of us will never reach it, but most of the hardcore bodybuilders here would agree that there is a point where genetics take over.
At only 19 ive worked my ass off to look the way i do. I know in my heart i will probably never look like the guys on the Flex, MM,MH covers ETC… Genetics are simply working against me. But i know, eventhough damn near everyone in my family is out of shape, that i can reach a balance. Everyone has the ability to reach “THIER OWN POTENTIAL”. And frankly as far as im concerned each and everyone of us has no right to “say die” untill that potential is reached. At only 19 ive spent enough time, money and sweat to make an overweight person crindge at the thought of dieting. My only advice is tell your overweight friends to come to T-mag and educate themselves. Later All…
The food industry spends $30 BILLION each
year pushing mostly highly processed foods
at the American consumer. You’re fooling
yourself if you don’t think that they’ve
been enormously successful at this. The
message is to eat, eat, eat. They wouldn’t
spend this much if it didn’t work! This cannot
be discounted when discussing the origins
of obesity in the US.
The food industry claims it’s all a matter
of marketplace choice, which is bullshit.
If it was just free choice by consumers, they
wouldn’t bother manipulating the population
starting with toddlers to eat the food of their
choice. Kids at age 2 or 3 can recognize
the golden arches before they recognize pictures of Santa Claus (another overly pushed
image).
$30 BILLION!! What carrot, spinach leaf,
or bowl of oatmeal can compete with that??
After reaching SLM post, it reminded me about a McDonald’s marketing. It is aimed at kids. If you get the kids, you get the parents. Anyway, if you want more info on how genetics ARE NOT TO BLAME, you have to pick up Eric Schlosser’s “Fast Food Nation”. It is an excellent read and work every single penny. It will really open your eyes to how the fast food companies get you hooked. This is a book that should be sitting on every bodybuilder’s book shelf.
T-Dawgs…for a real laugh, you gotta follow-up the advice posted above and go to the American Fatso Society’s website (www.naafa.org). Article Five of the Declaration of Fat People’s Rights (and I wish to God I was kidding, but it’s real) goes as follows: To refuse participation in weight loss programs of all kinds, including diets, surgery, aversive psychological conditioning, and chemical regimes, without jeopardizing access to other treatment and care.
Hmmm.wonder how MB Eric would end this post?
I have been posting on the NAAFA site. Several of my posts didn’t go through until I sent a post about censorship then all of my posts came up…WOW! I am trying to understand those people and their acceptance of being grossly overweight. It makes no sense to me at all, but I am posting to try and understand. I am sure they would all think we were freaks if they looked at this forum. I just don’t get the NAAFA by-laws and rules, it just makes ZERO sense to me and I can’t seem to get a good response on their forum other than I shouldn’t be obsessed with making my body perfect.
I just read the thread you started over there and I think that you did a good job posing the questions. The issue that you are going to run into there is that the people on that board and on this board are about as polar opposite as possible. I skimmed through there site and although I do not agree with everything, but they make some good points about tolerance. The biggest problem by in far at that site regarding diet/exercise is the idea that a diet is a temporary solution. Of course we all know that being fit and having a bodybuilder physique is a lifestyle. Please keep us informed if someone of the NAAFA forum says something that makes good sense.
I agree with those that said the biggest problem is educating people about proper diet and exercise. The food industry has a very powerful grip on the general population. I sam a poster the other day that had a new born baby on it and the caption said “where will he have his first french fry?” My immediate thought was the poster was sponsored by the american heart association and warned about the dangers trans-fatty acids in our diet. Maybe this poster was letting the public know they are poisoning themselves everyday with the processed, chemical filled shit they put into their bodies. NO! The poster was an ad for McDonald’s. What the fuck? Our society is so twisted that it is actually encouraged to bring you toddler to McDonalds to get an early start towards heart disease. Why not after the supersize fries and coke take the little tike over to the strip club so he can have his first tequilla, cigarette, and STD all in the same day? Now that’s living! Has anyone else seen this ad? What do you think?
I invited them to come check out the T-Mag forum, but I doubt their moderator will let it go through.
Jason you sounded really sincere, I can’t even fake that… maybe it comes with maturity (mean this in a good way). Anywho they responded by calling you: ignorant and egotistical. Man… I am slowly but surely cutting thru my naive belief that I can help anyone with anything (ie: change their point of view/opinion).
I think some of you missed the point of my posting. I agree on the eat-less, exercise more routine. (BTW, there was a great series on dieting in the old Bloom County comic strip many years ago where Opus tried every diet except eat less, exercise more.) I agree that many people are slobs who pound down nothing but burgers and fries. I totally agree our kids are getting fat and lazy. On the other hand, I totally disagree with the self-righteous attitude some people on this thread seem to have.
In my opinion, the "system" currently in place to help obese people is a travesty. The advice from so-called experts is often bad, if not outright wrong. Family doctors don't seem to know as much about obesity and lipolytic mechanisms as half the people on this web site. And let's not even talk about serotonin response to blood sugar and monounstaurated fats, hyperinsulemia or any of the other ignored systemic aspects of obesity.
So where does the average obese person go to get the correct information? Where does fatty find information if he doesn't know what it is he's supposed to be looking for? How does he sift the gems out of the crap of "protein is bad", "eating fat makes you fat", "all fat is bad" messages out there? And if he does find 1 note that omega fatty acids might be good, and 20 places that say all fats are bad, which will he believe?
For that matter, if a body builder is looking for information, what is he/she most likely to find? Flex, MuscleMag, MuscleMedia 2000 etc. and we know what this forum thinks about them. A similar situation exists for obese people.
So if you're lucky enough that "eat less, exercise more" actually works for you (and it's exactly what many people need), I guess that makes you a hero in the minds of some people on this thread, and if your metabolic situation is more complex, that makes you a fat slob. How wonderful. Come on people, sure you can ridicule the 99% of people who are fat slobs, and deserve ridicule, but have some decency for the 1% of people who aren't. The trouble is, you don't know which are which, do you?
Okay I just visited the NAAFA site (I’m sittin in my office today , and this is a nice “break” from usual computer routine) - and I took a gander at the forums and caught a few “diets can kill” and “diets do more harm than good”. Has anyone told these people like, “DUH”? Diets ALONE don’t work. Geez. But here’s my rub: while most obese people cry out for acceptance and tolerance - most do not show one ounce for people like you or me who really care about our health (AND well-being). It goes both ways - I do tolerate and understand a person’s battle of the bulge. However, they should start doing the same for me.
I will never buy the “I’m obese due to genetics” arguement. Yes not everyone has the genetics to be below 10% bf and yes many will always be a little chubby even with a good excercise program and nutritional plan, but can anyone really say that there are people who are genetically predisposed to be morbidly obese. Nobody was naturally meant to be that way. I know some on this thread feel many of us are being insensitive and self righteous, but I think our harsh words come more from the frustration of watching people slowly killing themselves while living in emotional agony each day. Does anyone really believe that any of the folks over at the NAAFA have truly even accepted themselves. I don’t. I think each one of them looks in the mirror each morning and agonizes over the reality that they are disgustingly fat. I don’t honestly believe they are fighting for acceptance I think they are trying to fool themselves into believing that obesity is o.k. I also think that if you could get into each one of there brains you would find they are failing miserably. Fighting for acceptance from society will not bring back the self esteem, health, energy, and simple mobility that most of these peole lack. Accepting that there is a serious problem and working towards doing something positive to change it will. Being more accepting of obese people is not doing them any favours. I’m certainly not advocating verbal abuse towards them, just a refusal to agree that their is nothing to be done to change genetics along with an offer of assistance in helping them become better educated and motivated. In closing I would like to say that I actually like fat people. Especially when I’m camping. If we get attacked by a bear it’s one less person I have to worry about outrunning.
Ok, so I have a minute and I go to the site and check out some threads. I come across a recipe request thread. So I figure for a second that maybe, MAYBE, there will be some healthy food selections to be had… Here is one diddy…
PEANUT BUTTER CREAM CHEESE PIE 1 Graham Cracker pie Shell, 12 ounces cream cheese softened, 8 ounces Cool Whip, 1/4 cup sugar, 3 - 4 tablespoons peanut butter, 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Anybody care to guess what half of this beauty would do for you if you ate it while watching Jerry Springer? I just think they dont even have a clue. Hey dont forget the “diet” coke to wash it all down.
I can’t stand it anymore - have to put my 2 cents in on this thread. The only point I want to make is on the “diets don’t work” mentality. This mentality stems from the fact that after you go on a diet and lose weight, you always gain back at least some weight eventually post diet and therefore diets must not work. They look at a diet as a one time cure or fix and think that a one time diet should make them thinner forever and if it isn’t forever, then the diet didn’t work. They fail to see the bigger picture. Diets do work, they just need to understand that an occasional diet is part of life, not a one time deal as it’s almost impossable to eat exactly at maintenance calories every day, day in day out and therefore, once a year or so, you need to diet and get back on track. BB’s understand that you have to periodically go on a “cutting cycle” once every year or 2. Its part of our plan. It just bugs me that they try to represent a diet as a one time fix instead of part of a life long health and fitness plan. Then again, maybe there’re just using this “diets don’t work” as a convenient rationalizational excuse to avoid the pain and sacrifice of a diet and fitness lifestyle.
Obesity is gross and a serious health problem. But I spent 6 years as a personal trainer and I learned compassion. A really obese person oftentimes has no significant other and no chance of finding one and is embarassed to leave his or her house. I had so much admiration for my heavy clients that recognized their problem and tried to do something about it. Some had emotional ties to food that I never beat, but just training and interacting with people made their lives better. Grosser to me are people like my buddy, a super-skinny guy who eats pizza every night, drinks 5 or 6 sodas a day, and is developing the grossest spare tire you’ve ever seen. But he won’t do anything about it because, hey, in his clothes he LOOKS like he’s thin. Oh well. You gotta focus on helping those that want help…
Here on the Westside of LA, everyone is very body conscious, and there are not nearly as many morbidly obese people as there are in other parts of the country. It’s easy to find healthy food in restaurants, and there are health food stores all over. A much higher percentage of people go to the gym and participate in outdoor activities such as cycling and rollerblading. Another plus is that hardly anyone smokes, and smoking in restaurants and bars is against the law! If fat people have made peace with themselves, good for them, but they’re headed straight for diabetes, with all its complications, and heart desease.
We should accept fat. We should also accept alcoholism, HIV, smoking, shooting up heroin, and every other choice people can make to commit suicide in the slow lane. Duh! Being obese isn’t like breast cancer. It’s self inflicted and unhealthy, even in the short term. We shouldn’t ridicule obese people but we sure as hell shouldn’t give them special rights and do things that foster obesity. Diets don’t work. Well, if you view a diet as a quick fix to dump some weight and then go back to mainlining bacon grease and chasing it with a box of twinkies they’re correct. If you look at diet as a method of eating healthy long term then they are very wrong. A lot of people could really use real nutritional education. Moving around a bit would be a good thing for them to do as well but with being hugely fat as an excuse that will have to come later.
