My mom used to be extremely overweight: 5’4", almost 200 lbs during college. She has an extremely difficult time exercising due to a broken back that didn’t heal right. But she made permananent changes to her diet, and she’s been 114 ever since I can remember because she made the decision to be able to walk up a flight of steps, not to indulge in every craving for burgers and ice cream.
Chris,
Yes, I would be quite happy to have my post in the Reader Mail section this week. Thanks!
I was thinking about the genetic argument the fatties are using at NAAFA. I have come to the conclusion that they are correct. It really is their genetics that cause them to be fat. Because their genetics are freaked out about the fact that all they do is sit on their lazy ass and stuff their faces with CRAP! So it is a genetic problem…Their lifestyles are in direct conflict with their genetics!
Hey, maybe the good folks at T-Mag can spin off a new web site devoted to the detailed knowledge that obese people really need. Basically, everything body-builders want to know about fat loss, but adapted and summarized for the obese. Put in some scientific articles about food and proper eating, mechanisms of fat loss, importance of weight training, a copy of the beginner’s blast-off program, stuff like that. And Biotest could open up new markets for MD6, T2, Lo Carb Grow, protein bars etc.
Jason, how do I get to your thread, I was just there and couldn’t find it on the NAAFA discussion board.
You think that that fat organization is bad bad??? there are several other groups just as serious promoting the “anorexic lifestyle” and the “buliminic lifestyle” they are actually promontong it as a way of lifestyle rather than a sickness. a spokesperson was recently on a currient affair tv programe to defend themself. so much for health for some people.
A lot of ignorance on this topic on display. What is the real issue here? Let’s be honest - there ARE differences in people’s ability to fight off fat. I know all too well. I lost 150 lbs in the last 2 years. I had one short stretch where I let up a bit & gained 30 lbs in just 2 months!! Many of you couldn’t do that if you gorged every day, which I didn’t by a long stretch. I’ve worked hard & am resigned to it being a battle for the rest of my life. Life is MUCH better being in shape. But have a little compassion for those not as blessed as you. Modern lifestyles & foods are conspiring against us - and there is a lot of ignorance in the general society.
Yes, it’s laziness too - but be honest & look in the mirror. Maybe your “issue” in life isn’t obesity…maybe it’s drugs, alchohol, depression, a violent temper - I know very few people lacking in “self-imposed” faults. In fact, I don’t know any. Are you one?
I have done some reading recently and came across this statistic in an older fitness manual–that predisposition to obesity is 25% genetic. Therefore, I draw the conclusion that nobody really has to be obese, but there are individuals who put on and keep weight on more easily. Some of us metabolize quickly and even though we might get fat for us, we by no means would be considered obese. Other individuals, at the upper end of that 25% genetics, metabolize slowly and don’t have to eat a great deal before they put on way too much weight. It is a question of degree, however, and how much we eat, what we eat, and how we exercise (if at all) contributes to it all. Some individuals fight all their lives with maintaining low weight, for others it isn’t any work at all.
When you get to the homepage click on the Talk Button on the upper right of the screen. It is an open talk forum. I was getting flamed pretty hard for not getting it and finally a few of the posters on there said they were embarrassed to be part of the board because of how a few others were treating me. I thought it was cool. I don’t get the feeling that a lot of them really believe the NAAFA guidelines. I would guess if they could look like most T-mag readers they would jump at it. I just really found it disappointing how quick they were to blame it on genetics and let it go at that. I made a point that just because a kid is born to the wrong parents, grows up in the wrong neighborhood, goes to the wrong schools, etc, doesn’t mean that kid can’t grow up to be President, but if he believes, well this is how my life was meant to be, he is doomed. It seems a lot of the posters have joint pain and insulin resistance and I posed the question which came first being overweight then the health problems, or the health problems caused them to be overweight…chicken or the egg type arguement…So far no response to it.
Why don’t all the people who were formerly obese and have succeeded with a fat-loss program, begin their own association? Maybe a “National Association of Formerly Fat People”? Just to show the people of NAAFA that losing fat and being healthy can be a successful (and safe) long-term goal. Just a thought.
I just read a thread about finding industrial strength toilet seats. Some of these people are busting their toilets when they go to take a crap. i about died laughing.
at my place of business there is this dood… he is a big dood about 6’3" but maybe weights 300 or 350 even. Fat tho obviously enough muscle to walk around. Dood doesn’t seem too impeded by his bigness. This dood cracked one of the toilets in the bathroom, dunno whether these were industrial or not, but now there is a weight limit sticker on the bathroom walls…

The NAFFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance) posting is the first letter in the Reader Mail section of this week’s mag. Soon all of us will be posting at NAFFA.org! Here is T-mag’s response:
That’s amazing stuff, Mark, we’re speechless. The really sad part here is that this organization actively discourages people from getting healthy by saying that dieting is dangerous and ineffective. Perhaps if they educated themselves about how to properly lose weight they wouldn’t have this fear.
Sure, some diets don’t work and are unhealthy in the long run (the Slim Fast plan, the “Subway Diet,” high carb/low protein diets, starvation diets etc.) but healthy eating and exercise as a lifestyle is always effective.
After looking through their site, the underlying vibe seems to be, “We’re fat and you should stay fat, too. Don’t even attempt to lose weight. As long as everyone is fat, then we’ll feel better about ourselves.” We’re not sure whether to be angry at this group because of the misinformation they spew or just feel sorry for them because they’re pathetic. Maybe a little of both.
This is going to pretty much sum this up for me. I know about people with thyroid problems. My mother (although not genetic) after having her ovaries removed aquired a thyroid and estrogen imbalence. Now with therapy shes not as skinny as she was before at 5'5' 115lbs, but shes not "morbidly obese" at 160 either. The point is she tries. I personally don't look down on anyone that is willing to give it an HONEST try. When I see "fatties" in the gym, and they're not doing something right I try to help and give advice. I don't criticize them.(everyone has to start somewhere)
None of us were born with perfect bodies. Where some have to work harder to lose weight some have to work just as hard to put it on. You don't think skinny people get picked on? To me its just as unattractive being too skinny as it is being too overweight. I graduated at 5'11" 150lbs 4 years later I'm at 190 and I worked for every ounce damn it.<P>
Good work Jason. As soon as you find out what the hell their deal is at NAAFP. Let me know, because I just don't get it!
To Mark, funny shit man I've seen it. I would like a Double Whopper Combo, Super Sized, with a Whopper on the side, and a Diet Coke. He He He.
Its kinda like going home popping in some Richard Simmons and Sweat'n to some Oldies. Even when you try to help them (NAAFP) they ostracize you. I give up!
I they wanna be fat... let them eat and be merry.
There is always a bigger fish bro. You werent born with ripped abs, bulging bi’s, and even that huge ego.
F*** you bro, if you read my post you’ll notice that I say that none of us were born with perfect bodies. That we shouldn’t look down upon those who TRY. Its just blows my mind how some of these people can sit there and advocate this type of lifestyle. If you don’t like what I have to say you can kiss my ass too!
now heres the funniest one i’ve seen yet, she’s a 5’8" 240 pound “Fitness Enthusiast” who mainly eats a vegetarian diet (well I suppose ice cream, cake, candy, chips, snackwells, doughnuts, pastries, cheese pizzas galore, etc. etc. don’t have meat). This supposed “fitness machine” is suing because she is not allowed to be an aerobics instructor, amazing as that may seem I’m thinking the owner of the studio might just feel this may not be the best to sell memberships, so now he get’s doubly fucked. Sad.

eddie I saw that… and if that woman isn’t the best argument vs cardio then I dunno what is… this woman could probably jazzercise most of us to death and she’d still keep going for a few hours… she’s got a good cardiovascular system (right?) maybe better then most bodybuilders out there, but still OBESE!
Goldie, regarding your post on the NAAFA discussion forum, while there may not be any “magic pill”, perhaps some magic beans, wait, magic JELLY Beans, no…no wait, magic CHOCOLATE COVERED JELLY beans…MMMMMMMMM, Saturated…
