The “it worked for me, it’ll work for you” b.s., along with its myriad variations, is used most frequently by individuals who are too narrow-minded, self-centered, and mean-spirited to ever entertain an open mind toward something that they (and we as a society) understand very little about.
Trust me on this - the “obvious” solutions sure-as-heck have not, and will not, help the millions of people out here who don’t live up to your (as if they really give a frick!) standards and ideals. If they did, no one would have taken the time to start this thread.
My opinion - unless you have a genuine interest in learning about obesity, and a genuine interest in helping an obese person (and yes, I have, and I am doing both), then shut the hell up and go bitch on Elitefitness or somewhere else!

You know, I personally think it is you annoyed that is full of s*@#!. I’ve read all of the messages from all the “healthy” people, and you know what? They’re right. It’s a matter of dedication and will power. Yes, people who are genetically predisposed to obesity do have to watch their diet more, but stuffing a large pizza down your throat doesn’t exactly help either. People need to quit being lazy, and feeling sorry for themselves. Saying oh woa is me, woa is me, poor me, ordering an Ab Flex trying it for a week and then saying, “its useless I’m just fat, I Quit”! No, brother it takes hard work ethic, training (weight and areobic), dedication, and a good diet. Do all these things strictly, for an extended period of time, and you’re still a fat ass…then and only then might I buy into your excuse. That number however, is no where near the number of people that are currently “obese” in this country. Look at how may people(formally fat) are now in shape and feeling great. How did they do it? Was it some miracle drug or are some wonder gadget of the television? Nope, just plain old honest to goodness hard work. If you want examples believe me I have plenty. If you can’t accept that may its you who needs to seek counseling to cry to about being fat. That is,how they say, is that. Just deal with it.
I’m sorry Annoyed but I am proud to be one of your self congratulatory fitness biggots. Perhaps if morbidly obese people had attitudes like mine and others then they would not be obese at all. I typically look at these people and ask how the hell could they let it get that bad and seriously not care enough to do the work to stop it. Oh well, I just ignore it and move on with MY life.
Y’know I have asthma and I also get migraines. I once told someone that if I didn’t take care of myself, I’d either be dead or on really heavy medication every waking minute. So, I take care of myself. Someone here posted a “get over ourselves” statement and that by 60% of Americans being obese does not directly affect us. Well, ever hear of the “domino effect”? First of all, obesity is becoming the number one killer in this country - beating cigarette smoking. And that’s another thing I can’t figure out -all them people who can breathe freely and with no problems, smoking. Okay, so here we have all these obese adults and teens and due to all the health problems obesity can cause (do I really have to list them here?), they have to go to the doctor more often than someone like…me or you. AND they have health insurance. So there you have it folks, the rub. The high cost of health insurance. As well as medical care. In other words, them obese people you see about, do affect you in some way. Yes, SOME of these people do have thyroid problems, but MOST do not. Why is it this country has millions of people with thyroid problems and other countries do not? I am not insensitive to those who are obese - and want to do something about it. I applaud them. I do not think being thin is the answer to ALL problems. I mean, I even think that chick who plays Ally McBeal is icky - as well as the other “lollipops” on Friends (big head, stick body). I prefer a more realistic build - one that is functional for strength, agility - pure athletism. With that, people, there is a problem in this country with obesity. A big problem (and that ain’t no pun…).
Yeah, I’ve seen these people in action. They typically eat a couple of donuts and some coffee for breakfast, a bag of chips and a Coke around 10 AM, McDonald’s for lunch, a bag of buttery popcorn and Coke for a mid-day snack, and take-out pizza, cheese sticks or wings, and Coke for dinner. And they wonder why their asses are as wide as most doorways! Then they bitch if they actually have to walk somewhere. You see them in the grocery store parking lot waiting five minutes for a car to pull out of a spot three spots closer to the store than the next open spot. Then they load up on chips, low-fat cookies (which they eat by the container – can’t hurt, since they are fat-free! LOL) and Diet Coke (which apparently is believed by some to magically negate the sugar and fat in the donuts). Then they bitch about their genetics!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! LOL
The other day, I large group of us were walking up a staircase behind a really fat pig. Not only did she fucking reek, she could barely get her fat ass up the stairs. She even had difficulty lifting her fat fucking feet up to the next step! We were afraid that she would miss a step, slip, and roll down the stairs, taking us out like so many unfortunate bowling pins! We all tried to move over to safety (no getting around this wide-load), but, somehow, she made it up, although she was beet-red and sucking wind like a Hoover! We have a death pool on her…I have July 3. Although she’s about 40, I think I may be too optimistic about her longevity!
A final thought to the fat chicks out there…keep America beautiful, lose some fucking weight! Thank you.
I guess I’d buy the genetic angle or it’s something we can’t understand if the evidence wasn’t pretty overwhelming in the other direction. My mother in law is about 300 lb or more. Both of her kids have normal bodyweights and have all their lives. My wife lives a fairly active life and eats basically whatever she feels like. She’s 5’8" and 130 lb. and pretty muscular for a lady. Most of us in the US are basically transplants from elsewhere. Go to any of those countries, Norway, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, or any other and look at the population. I know that they weigh less on average. It’s not some wierd ray from space, or a abberant mutation caused by the unique geology of North America, it’s lifestyle. Move more, eat less. I don’t expect people to be ripped. Hell, I get up to 14% bodyfat sometimes. If your fat cripples you or makes you waddle, or you can’t fit in a regular seat you’ve waited way too long to start doing anything about it.
Eat less,exercise more!!
out of curiosity, does your call name ‘MDLP’ have anything to do w. minidisc players, some of which use mdlp?
there are a lot of fatties cuz, as people have implied, everyone wants two things: speed and ease. whats easier and faster than takin ur fat ass to the corner and waitin 2 minutes while someone removes your greaseburger from the deep frier, hands u a basket of fries and a diet coke? exactly…this country has been movin towards the ‘hey if its easy and feels good, go for it!’ attitude for a while now (a fact thats reflected in more than the unbelievable percentage of obese Americans)… people don’t like strife, don’t like resistance…and most are more than willing to rationalize their cornyass lifestyle of mcdonalds and inactivity. as an engineering student, i got sucked into this void of ‘eh whatever’ for 3 years of my college career…3 yrs durin which all my jabba-sized friends considered takin the stairs to the second floor the most strenuous activity imaginable…3 years of wendy’s being considered “healthy food” and relatively high dining…but as of this year (my last year), i am proud to say that that is no longer the case for me…thank GOD
Obesity isnt always a sign of laziness, it can also be a sign of psychological trauma. My mother is a good case. When she was little her uncle repeatedly raped her. When she told her parents they didnt believe her. Well a couple days ago she showed me some pics when she was young before the abuse started, and she was a little chubby, which is common with kids no matter what lifestyle. However, she wasnt on the road to obesity. After the abuse started it was a different story. She got fat. Well, guess what she turned to for comfort? Food. Something similar happended to me when I was young as well. I turned to food as well and got fat, and still am fat. Dont think because Im fat Im not in shape. I go to the gym twice a week and will start going 4 times a week soon hopefully. Blood pressure and resting pulse are within normal ranges at a bodyweight well over 300 pounds. I hope to break a state record in the bench press sometime hopefully this year. But please understand that being obese dosnt always stem from laziness. And Mark, Im am not your judge, or anyone elses for that matter, but please take a step back and consider some of what you typed. Do you think that women wants to be obese, or have a diffucult time doing what for yourself is easy. Im not making excuses for the person, but nobody should be looked down upon because of their bodyweight. And when I say nobody I mean myself as well. I have caught myself looking down upon people fatter than me. (Pot calling the kettle black huh?). But please consider what obese people go through, whether they brought it upon themselves or not, and ask yourself, “Do I want to add to their burden or go upon my way and live as I feel I ought too?”
I work in a supermarket and saw the classic overweight customer yesterday. She was overweight but not obese. Her ten year old daughter was way overweight. The girl had about $10 worth of candy(gummy bears, etc). Their entire order consisted of diet coke, lo-fat ice cream, reduced fat frozen dinners, cookies(a reward for eating low fat,) and almost every other “light” packaged food they could find. No fruit or vegetables, just packaged, empty calorie “healthy foods.” Now, I’m not saying that everyone must eat perfectly every day but some people just don’t have a clue.
Pete, MDLP is “Mini Disc Long Play” I was searching for a handle while listening to a MD. Looked down at the player, and MDLP was born. Anyhow I feel that my original post received a lot of great responses, some criticized me and others were with me. I read them all and they all had a valid point. I feel that anone who attemps to change their life should be provided with all the support in the world… However the person I witnessed eating 2/3 of a carrot cake in one sitting, well then I just point and laugh.
If you are fat and happy with it then fine enjoy. But if you are not happy then should get your lazy ass in the gym and start eating healthy. I a sick and tired of these people blaming it on their genetics. 60% of americans are obese and out of this 60 % i will be generous and say that 10% of them have a legitimate medical condition. The rest are lazy. The thing that really pisses me off is that these lard asses are now trying to pass this laziness off as a disability. That is complete bullshit.
My favorite are the scooter people. Those are the ones you see in malls that are so fat they become disabled and have to use scooters to get around. It pisses me off because up here in Ontario Canada we have public health care. These lazy fucks eat themselves to the point where there doctor diagnoses them as disabled and the tax payer gets to fork out a couple of grand for a motorized scooter. Is I ever get to the point where I’m so fat I need a scooter to cart my ass around, I’m gonna drive it in front of a bus and end it all. The thing that really makes me crazy is people don’t need to be obsessive work out junkies and nutrition freaks (like most of us on this forum) to be relatively healthy. Just put down the fuckin box of snackwell’s and go for a walk. Interestingly enough some of the research out there claims that most people actually consume about 200 less calories a day then our ancestors did. I think the obesity epidemic is due to two simple facts. Most people live on proccessed food and lead sedentary lifestyles. It really is simple to solve. Eat a little protein and fiberous vegetables every day, cut out the proccessed foods and go for a walk. Oh, and one more thing. As a person with a natural endomorphic build who has struggled to keep my weight down my entire life I say to those who blame genetics ,DEAL WITH IT ! Life isn’t fair and you can sit and wine about it or you can realize your going to have to work a little harder and smarter than the average person. If you don’t have the time or energy or some other lame excuse than accept the fact that one day you just might end up a scooter boy.
Manus brings up a point that I didn’t think of. I predict that America will have nationalized health care within 10 to 15 years. When this happens we’re going to be taxed billions because of people’s laziness and ignorance.
I just read what may be the funniest fucking site on the web! It’s at www.naafa.org – the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. Seriously, it’s funny as shit. They think it’s good to be fat, and that it’s neither a serious medical problem nor an irritant for the rest of us! They talk about shit like picketing airlines for charging fat cows extra for taking up two seats! (I think they should be shipped in rail cars like livestock myself.) Regarding the pickets, they say to make sure the picket group is “large” (HAHAHA – really, they do) so that the picketers don’t TIRE! You know, if picketing is strenuous work, it’s time to get into the gym! The site also gives advice on how these fatties can squeeze into airline seats by keeping the armrest up. Of course, the poor guy in the next seat has to have some fat pig’s fat ass oozing into his seat! Here’s a typical gem:
DO YOU ENJOY HIGH RISK ACTIVITIES?
You have about as much chance of winning the lottery as you do of permanently losing weight by dieting. Over a five-year period, only 2-5% of dieters succeed in keeping their weight off. and over one-third of all diets result in long-term weight gain. Would you accept a treatment for any other medical condition that had those “success” rates? If you’ve dieted frequently in the past, what makes you think this time will be any different? You may be wasting time, money, and energy, and risking your health if you go on another diet. Are the odds worth it?
The worst is fat chicks who have small tits. They have got nothing!!
Some of the really strong people in the world look like pure fatties at first glance, but you can tell they are wicked strong if you have an eye for it. Nothing is as disgusting as a fat rolly polly slob of a woman. It is just fucking disgusting. The way their fucking mud flap arms and legs tuck into their tiny but flabby hands and feet. Holy shit! i am glad as shit that I don’t live in Wisconson.
It’s sad, in a way, and totally preventable.
I have to agree that a lack of activity and convenience foods are to blame instead of genetics, in most cases.
I used to be overweight, and lowcarbing has WORKED. No lowfat crap loaded with chemicals and sugar, which people believe will somehow make them magically thin. Snackwells cookies are still cookies…you cannot eat twelve cookies and think you’re being some kind of fat-sacrificing martyr. And no, it really isn’t “easier” to make Hamburger Helper than it is to grill a lean steak and some veggies.
When I was a kid there were very few planned athletic activities…I was on a soccer team but that was odd back then. Now parents feel they have to sign their kids up for a sport to get them to put down the joystick and play outside. God knows if they get a bicycle and some skates in the summer they can’t leave the driveway or they might get abducted. Give me a break.
On one hand, I don’t get overwrought about other peoples’ dietary choices or the fact that they don’t care about THEIR bodies, but I think the medical profession and food marketers have to shoulder some blame for America’s weight problem. Eating low-fat processed junk, SpecialK for breakfast and rice cakes for lunch, and doing aerobics does not make you thin – watching your carbs and working with weights does!
Holy S**T I thought www.naafa.org was a joke at first… OMG I think I need to see how many posts it takes to be banned from their site. Bet I could do it in 2. On a serious note I used to fly cross country quite often and one time I was seated BETWEEN two HUGE slobs. The worst airline nightmare of all in my opinion. Anyhw an hour into the flight I went to use the restroom and when I came back both of my armrests were up! Remember I was in the middle seat. (Must be bad karma) So I proceeded to sit down, buckle in and lower the armrests which were my only protection from the mountains of blubber on both sides. One of the pigs had the balls to say in a harsh tone “EXCUSE ME, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING” I replied, “Keeping your smelly, fat, sweaty skin from spilling over into my seat.” She (it) acted really offended and turned back to eating an ENTIRE bag of Oreos. I have no respect or pity for people like this.
Okay, so what’s with all the comments about fat women only. I’ve seen just as many grossly fat men out there and if you guys think that men don’t look damn awful without their shirts and their man-boobs and pasty white flabby skin drooping all over the place–then you’ve got another thing coming! It is gross and horrible to look at, and what’s worse is that our society actually allows guys like this to walk around topless so the rest of us have to put up with looking at the grossness. Yuk! As much as there is a law that does not allow women to walk around topless, there should be laws about gross, fat men walking around topless too!!!
Mark, if you don’t mind I’d like to use your post in Reader Mail this week.
