Why am I Getting Weaker?

First I want to start by saying that this is my first post so I would ask trolls to take it easy.
I am a 17 years old 6’1 255 pound high-school student and a football player that decided to start working out for strength/size.

I have been doing StrongLifts 5x5 and these are my results so far.
Starting So far
Squat-135x5 225x5 I did 295x1 but it was like a fucked up good morning/squat+ I can`t squat
Bench-135x5 225X5 I did 245x3 once with a friend
Deadlift-135x5 315X5 Very tiring
Press-75 135x5 My back bends in a weird way
Rows-95 185x5 They are getting easy with that weight

I need some advice because so far I have been feeling very tired during workouts and also I cant seem to be capable of lifting more…worst part is that what I am lifting right now feels sort of heavy and hard to do but I have done more weight in the past. I should mention that football have started now and I have 5 practices + 3 workouts a week instead of just 3 workouts a week and a summer break.

Any ideas advice thx…

Can you tell us how you have been feeling through the day/if you have been sleeping much or having trouble sleeping, or if you have lost your appetite?

I have been getting about 6-7 hours of sleep instead on 8-10 but I cant do much about that because I finish school at 3:15 and then practice is done at 6:30 + gym until 7:30 and I am back home at like 8:00 and then I have to eat and study. Also I have been trying Intermittent fasting and I think that this is the reason why I feel like shit…

It could be the diet, but I have a feeling it probably has to do with a bit of overloading your body. Not overtraining, but I believe the correct term is ‘overreaching’.

Because you’re in-season, football should be your priority. Chris87 (formerly football, now rugby player) has suggested 5/3/1 around here many times for similar situations. From what I understand, 5/3/1 is much more flexible in the way it works around whatever your primary sport is.

Thank you for the advice LoRez I will definitely look into 5/3/1 and I am hoping that within another week or so my body will get used to the overreaching

Have your moms go to Costco and get you a 6lb bag of whey.
Take it to skool.
Eat some between each period.

Common sense would dictate that for some big dude schooling for 8 hours, playing football and lifting weights, intermittent fasting would be retarded. Depends on how fat you are i guess.

I don’t think you are going to pack on much strength during season. I would check out WS4SB3. There is a good template for in-season strength training.

Stop doing IF, eat more. You can stay doing what you’re doing, but restricting calories as a non weight class athlete who is in season would be a horrible idea IMO.

A couple things:

1- does your team not have a lifting program? I can’t imagine a high school football team with no lifting program

2- You shouldn’t be doing starting strength during football season

3- Stop fasting, it’s a horrible idea. You need to fuel your body

4- You may be to the point where starting strength has ran its course and you won’t continue to make progress. Starting strength cannot be ran forever, at some point your body cannot recover fast enough because the weights are too heavy. It sounds to me that you are at this point

5- since you’re in season, practice is your main priority. Your lifting should NEVER negatively affect your practices.

6- like Lorez said, 5/3/1 is a good option for an inseason program (and offseason as well). If you want to run 5/3/1, lift twice a week (monday and wednesday would be best), do not go for max reps (just get the 5,3, or 1) and limit your assistance. Refer to point 2.

WS4SB’s inseason template is also a good one. Look into that as well.

You need to understand that your strength gains will be much slower than the offseason. In fact, you may just maintain your strength levels. That is to be expected. Putting more weight on the bar should not be your goal. Your goal should be to perform as well as possible in practice, and to maintain your current strength levels.

If you have any more questions, feel free

Everything that Chris87 said. I can’t think of anything else that I would add to that.

Listen to Chris87. 'Nuff said.

MFW: I thought the thread was deleted realized that its still here. Thx for the advice, I gave up on IF and started eating enough food also I feel like I am not getting enough volume from 5/3/1.

Im putting a dollar in a jar for everytime I read that phrase. I should have enough to go to Mexico at the end of the year.

Hint: It’s not the program, it’s you.
