Who Says Powerlifters Have to Be Fat!

No rest for the Weary
my meet on saturday marked 3 weeks out from my next meet the WABDL World Championships in Reno Nevada. What this essentially means is that I don’t have the luxury of taking time off and easing back into training after the meet. if anything it actually means that heavy deads are in the near future. I am however cutting out back squatting for 3 weeks and doing either no leg bench or using my new slingshot to help keep my shoulders healthy while training the bench.

Close grip Bench
(no feet)
185x5
225x4
265x3x2
285x3x3
add slingshot
285x6

Front squats
185x5
225x4
260x3x2
295x3x5

CGBP round 2
205x5
245x5
add slingshot
295x4x2
315x4x3

Pull ups
BWx10x7

Cable flys
10x4

Calves( to help prevent knee pain)

All in all a solid session. I have a feeling that the front squatting workouts will go much faster than back squat workouts have. My hope is that by the end of this 3 week cycle and my deadlifting meet I will be ready to launch back into a hardcore and uninterrupted sheiko training cycle

how did you like the slingshot?

How did you learn of the relationship between calves and knee pain?

Fantastic meet man, congrats on smashing the hell out of it.

Sheiko FTW!

Great job on surpassing your goals Ben. [/quote]
thank you! The goals are meant to be surpassed now if only every meet would go that well

haha I like to think so and yes he does… I was talking to him before weigh ins and he said that he had been taking in 10,000 Kcals a day to prep for this meet. Guy is a beastzaur!

I liked it considering that I am deloading my bench right now to rest up before my deadlift meet in 3 weeks, but it definitely felt like it was helping WAY too much to be something I would use often in a regular training cycle. I can say that for the next 3 weeks I’ll be using it for all my sets to get used to holding heavier weights and build confidence without screwing up the rest of my training

About a year ago my knees were really bugging me and I decided that it made sense to me that if I strengthened the muscles around them that they may stop hurting so I started doing calves 4 days a week. 2 weeks in my knee pain had disappeared. I stopped training them when I started doing sheiko because of the time and volume but when the knee pain started up again so should the calf work. This is one of the reasons that I always encourage lifters to try new things and experiment as long as something makes sense to you. even if there is “research” proving or disproving an idea every body is different and may react well to a method that isn’t widely accepted.

Thanks IA i don’t think it could have gone much better

shoulder and active recovery work 10/18/11
Went in today to get some blood flowing and do some light shoulder work since mine get slightly neglected with sheiko programming that I am running.

Strict military with tyler grips
45x10
135x5x5

Seated DB Laterals
20x10x5

Rear delt flys
25x10x4

single arm seated DB curl to press
25x10x3

Calves

stretched and foam rolled

Felt pretty good and the work loosened me up a bit. Tomorrow will be my first suited deadlift day in months I have some ideas for how I want to structure the workout and keep to my basic sheiko template so we’ll see how I can make it work

i love mine (only brought about 3 weeks ago or so) so fun. Just freshens things up a bit. I think the more you use it the less helpful it becomes ( not sure about that lol). I know when i first put mine on everything was so easy. Than it kinda just loosened up a bit. Definitly know what you mean about the confidence part, its like a heavy unrack for squatting.

well goodluck for the deadlift meet ben. What are you aiming for?

yeah I’m going to be using it for the next few weeks to help my shoulders and elbows get all healthy before I start my next full training cycle. as for my meet, I really don’t know haha I haven’t warn my suit since my last dead only meet… I pulled 733… and I just did that raw so I really hope that I can take down the junior world record of 751… I think I should be able to get 20 lbs out of my suit haha either way should be fun!

threw on the suit for the first time in months today. a little awkward but I feel very confident in hitting the record at worlds this year!

Deads
265x1
355x1
445x1
add suit
535x1
625x1
715x1
755xmiss (got a bad grip at the start… the crappy bar didn’t help much either)

Close grip Bench
205x5
245x5
285x4
add slingshot
285x4
305x3
325x2
325x1
365x1
385x1
no slingshot
225x10x3

Deads(deficit, conventional, no belt)
225x2
315x2
405x3 (double overhand no hook)
455x3
515x2x4

Cable flys
27.5x10x4

Dip/leg raise superset of epicness
BWx10x3

Called it good there. I really should have had the 755 deadlift but I know that I could have gotten it easily if it wasn’t 4 days after a meet and with a lame bar. Reno will be a different story. Until then I won’t be pulling anything super heavy. I’ll be running 3 weeks of sheiko with my suit on to get used to it again and then hitting worlds confident that I can finish that pull on contest day. also I’m deloading regular squats by front squatting instead and doing all of my heavy benching with the slingshot to give my shoulders a break after all the benching I have done this last cycle. after my main sets I’ll be doing some bench hypertrophy work to try to build up the muscle mass for my weakest lift in an attempt to balance it out a little more. Front squats and bench on friday till then lots of rest and homework.

Amazing…

I saw it this morning, and figured you had known about it. Even better that you didn’t!

Congrats man, you’ve made the “Big Show” now!

Haha thats awesome Ben! Congrats and its definitely not going to be your last recognition on PL Watch, esp after u smoke that world record in a few weeks!

Awesome to see your powerlifting career getting taken to a whole new level, well deserved dude!

^^^^^^ thanks to all of you guys! I always wondered what it would take to get on there. Turns out it was just a 1746 raw total at 198, why didn’t I think of that before? haha Definitely gonna try to make something noteworthy happen at worlds too and then I get to start my next training cycle, for which I am incredibly excited. I already have the first 13 weeks planned out and I have been talking shop with my training partners. I have decided on what my next set of goals are going to be as well… It’s going to be epic…
