Is it a farting sound? That would be hilarious.
That happened to me today. I was squatting and exhaling on a heavier rep, and I exhaled with exertion but the air went between my gum and my lip and made a farting sound. Honestly though, I usually fart at least once per gym session, so I didn’t let it get me down.
OP, I grunt during the last rep or two of my heaviest set. Sometimes it’s gotta happen. As long as it’s not too loud I don’t give it a second thought.

I’m not one for making noises, but on one of my heavy sets, I was stuck - an a Conan like roar came out all on its own, the weight moved - as it felt like the brakes where pulled off the power. Surprised myself.
Its crazy. Any of you doing more than the norm will get those looks.
I believe grunts on squats and deadlifts on heavy working sets should be acceptable, as well as chalk and knee wraps. You get looks for those in some gyms too.
I’ve never made much noise in the gym outside of banging weights and heavy breathing till I really started pushing my deadlift last summer. When I finally started working reps at 500#+ I made a lot of noise as I really strained getting the bar past my knees.
I think I’m afraid that my form will break down on Squats and I might hurt myself, so I’ve never pushed them as hard as I did my DL’s. Most I’ve ever done squatting was 3 reps at 425# and it didn’t require nearly the effort that I put in to deadlifting this last summer.
Next month I start working out at a new gym…I’m really hoping they are tolerant to real lifters; but I was encouraged by the 140# DB’s in the rack and the fact the lady who signed me up said they just ordered a new heavy duty bar for the squat rack because the old one was bent so bad from the powerlifter guys that work out there.
