Grunting in the Gym?

When is it okay to grunt?

I don’t think I ever grunt, but I often breathe loud and hard. I usually don’t notice until the set is over, and I never look around to see if it bothered anybody, but nobody’s ever said anything.

I don’t grunt, just huff and puff when pushing during sets as mentioned already.

Only a couple guys at my gym grunt on the bigger lifts, but they are 250lbs+ so I think they earned it.

If you don’t make any noise, then you aren’t lifting hard enough.

i only grunt when i puke which always happens on pushups day. people used to complain about the noise but i’ve switched from galvanized steel to high-impact polycarbonate puke buckets. the poly buckets have proven to be ultra-quiet AND non-marring…they also come in colors.

I grunt and it pisses me off when anyone says anything…no one has ever said anything negative, but this one guy always says, 'talk to ‘em’ after I’ve apparently grunted…makes me feel ghey…

The only time I tend to grunt is on my last sets of pulldowns.
It sucks though because instead of sounding hardcore, I just sound like a seventy-something year old man trying to take a shit.

I agree that when you give it your all you will make some weird noises. I workout by myself so its not a problem.

So yup, I grunt and sometimes yell.

I weigh 240 so I hope its acceptable :slight_smile:

sometimes i grunt on hard DL, squat, press etc. Its not deliberate and im not doing it for attention as I’d have to be pretty goddamn loud for the neighbors to hear me.

Sometimes I fart on heavy deadlift or squats, is this acceptable? Its very loud also. Should I try to avoid my set and wait for it to go through me?

GRUNTS

I make kind of a vocalized wheezing noise when I squat, and kind of contort my face and grimace like I’m constipated.

I get annoyed when people grunt excessively. However, I have found that most grunters exhibit their vocal prowess on the bench, but, maybe because that’s the only lift that they do. Or maybe I’m missing the relationship of cause and effect, and by only doing bench press you inevitebly become a grunter?

does farting count?

i have a horrible habbit when i squat heavey and try to control my breathing i spit on the mirrors kinda, yeah its gross but at least im not grunting

I’m 270 and don’t grunt, but I don’t mind when people do as long as its not the “hey, look at me and how much I’m lifting” grunts. Those are the same douchebags that wear wifebeaters and bang the dumbbells together.
I tore my tricep under 425 and let out a sound that was later referred to as a “lion getting ass raped”. It was half pain, half I’m about to drop this on my face.

I concentrate on either counting out loud, or at least breathing out. I used to hold my breath when I squat and I made this sound like “huuuaaahhhnnnnneeeee” like an old fat constipated guy.

I fucking hate grunters.

I figure, you need a belly full of air to lift heavy. You should use it.

The reason why I ask is I got TOLD for grunting to much.

At my gym, which is of the local hard ass brand, the main gym guy basically told me to STFU, when I was curling and grunting. I guess he thought I was trying to look tight.

I’ve been working on my breathing since then,(I was born with acute respiratory problems so I breathe wierd anyways).

He said this.
“They are just fucking curls, not squats, shut the fuck up.”

I kinda felt like a dip shit after that.

I try to control my breathing, since then, I find it helps alot better and grunting comes from shit breathing.

I guess, squats are alright to grunt, curls are not alright, bench press maybe, deadlift maybe.
