Actually I’ve known for a long time that there are a lot of assholes out there. I would have expected New Yorkers to be a little bit better than people from Alabama, considering their different histories.
There was a study I saw on Livescience about how the brain perceives people who are of a different race. What they found was that while our brains aren’t naturally programmed to hate those who don’t look like us it is natural for us to favor those who look the most like us. So in a roundabout way racism is partially the result of a normal brain function.
The conclusion I have come to based on that then, is if it is normal for us all to have a racial bias then it doesn’t matter if someone is “racist” because to some degree we all are. What is important is how we deal with these feelings. ie Do you use the intellect to overcome it with love, tolerance and acceptance? Do you run someone poor soul over with a truck like the op video? Use Facebook or Blackberry to organize a flash mob?

It has been a number of years since I looked at the state rankings but if I remember correctly Alabama and Mississippi were ranked 1 and 2 for the most recorded lynchings. Michigan ranked lowest with zero lynchings. The Detroit river was where the underground railroad ended. Michigan was the birthplace of the Republican party which was formed to promote the abolition of slavery.
Historically Mississippi and Alabama have been hell on earth for blacks while Michigan has been a sanctuary for blacks. When one of the Scottsboro boys escaped from jail he fled north to Detroit. When the FBI caught him the governor of Michigan refused to extradite him back to Alabama. I’m not confused about which state has historically been a better place.

Lots of leaps to conclusions here. Yes, I have no doubt that given our history, many people may respond more favorably to someone who looks much like they do. This is not “racism”. Racism implies a social advantage of one group over another. It does NOT refer to two people of the same race noticing they are the same race and seeing that as a commonality.
For one, it has more to do with CULTURE which is most easily identified by appearance. I am going to figure the average black man in Houston has had some similar life experiences because of the CULTURE in this city over the last several decades. I would not be able to say the same if I moved to Africa. In fact, I would be the outsider even though everyone around me is generally a similar “color”.
Not that this is any consolation, but it’s kind of related, and definitely deserved.
